    Scary, looks like an injury that could easily occur to any basketball player. Never heard of it before this one & seems like something that could also occur to competitive tennis players since the feet are under a lot of stress with many stops & starts moving forward & backwards but not aware of any pro tennis players that have experienced a Lisfranc injury.

    What is involved in a Lisfranc surgery? Do they use a cadaver ligament? Do they use screws/plates etc. to hold it in place? And lastly, why is this ligament repair so much different than other ligament repairs? Knee ligaments are damaged all the time and most athletes can have a full recovery. My brother tore his playing professional rugby, he is 6ft 225lbs. They stepped on his foot while he was changing directions. Basically how I understood it, because he is so young they wanted to put screws through in the position where the ligament was. The doctor concluded that too much damage had occurred to the structure of the foot and the arch so they had to take bone out of his heal and plant it where the ligament was so that the bones could grow together. Strangely enough you dont need much movement in that part of the foot. You cant really stitch the ligament back together because it is too short. He had 3 or 4 full lower leg up to the knee casts and is now in a moonboot. There is alot of paraphrasing but its the basics i could recall.

    aight now im scared because for 2 years iv been making my ankles & feet as strong as possible with resistance band workouts, 1 legged isometric holds, 1 legged weighted squats, weighted heel drops, leg press calf raises, deadlifts, plantar strengthening work, subtalar joint strengthening work, and lots of rolling/yoga...but he says this was a random injury unrelated to Chet's body/lack of strength.

    • @bonkersdonkers7381
      @bonkersdonkers7381 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you strengthen the muscles of the foot, the ligaments will be protected from those shearing force. Think of your muscles like bumpers on a car. They have a tensile force which protect the integrity of the foot. This is why a weak hamstring predisposes people to an ACL tear, or a weak calf muscle makes you more likely to tear the Achilles. You are doing the right thing. Chet was just not prepared for durability, as he was never properly trained. This is why if you’re a serious basketball player you gotta train your entire leg. Not for explosiveness, but for injury prevention.

    Dr. Sutterer, is there any reason that the Lisfranc ligament has such a poor healing rate and often requires surgery?

    I had this injury in soccer kicking a ball full force and someone put their heel in front. I ended up hitting their heel and the cleats on the bottom. They took an x-ray and the bones were separated and my foot was like a balloon for a month. I chose not to do surgery and put up with the searing pain for a long time. What helped was over the counter arch supports and a really tightly tied shoe. Eventually about 1.5 year later the pain dissipated. That was rough.
