I have a small farm. I do a lot of wire twisting. I found that I was always cutting myself later on when I did it the way you are doing. Plus it takes longer to do. I finally bit the bullet and got an automatic wire twister from Gemplers. They sell double looped ties to go with it. Probably one of the best buys I've ever made.
You are strong as a new gardener thank you so much. The step by step and detailed guidance is priceless. Can’t wait to set up my garden with all your suggestions.
Ok I found the exact pipe you are using. And the elbows. The local hardware store are all out. However a new store just opened up. Checked with them they have it. Thanks for not blowing me off. They also have the pipe to make the leaky hose in the lengths I want. Guess I got what I deserved trusting only the big box stores. If I can will send you photos of finished project. Thanks for all the tips.
When you cut the trellis in half how did you attach the side with no square left to the conduit. Did you clip off the excess and make the second panel shorter? Thanks

I’ve been using conduit pipes for over twenty years. It lasts forever! I use nylon netting instead of fencing to save money. But be certain to spend a bit more and get the 3/4” or even 1” diameter pipe. Without the fence panels for reinforcement, 1/2 inch will bend under any serious weight, like green beans. The interior rebar support is an awesome idea. I’ll try that this year.
New Gardner here. My first summer melon crop was a disaster. I probably think it’s because I kept them on the ground. I will definitely try this method for next growing season. I love those metal pipes, and we have tons of extra for making curtain rods. Great idea for trellis frame. Thanks!
This is such a wonderful idea! I just built my raised garden beds and was wondering how to go about trellising INSIDE the beds for tomatoes and such. I am planning on doing the arched trellis idea between the beds over the walkways for cucumbers, beans, peas, ets. But this fence panel may be just the ticket for inside the beds! Super excited to give this idea a try! Thanks!
I picked up some temp fencing from my local hardware store for $40 a panel & used rebar to anchor them into the ground. I've used it to grow a tonne of beans & peas 👍

Conduit is a little expensive but after watching how simple these were to build I might make that purchase. I spent some money and bought metal poles over 20 years ago for my pea fences and I'm still using them
pearl wright yeah, I think the 10’ pipes are $13, but it’s much cheaper than the galvanized plumbing pipe. And you’re right, these things will last forever so it’s an investment.
@@urbanfarmstead how did you get the 8 foot sections? Did you buy 10' sections and have them cut and threaded at the store? I am struggling to find them in that length at all my local hardware and farming stores.
@@bradbirchfield yes, I had them cut and thread at the store. I might have even started with 16s that they cut in half and threaded, but now I don’t recall. Either way, yes have them cut and thread in the plumbing section.

So I'm leaning toward the last option with the rebar pounded into the soil. But I'm concerned when it's loaded with heavy tomato's and we get a wicked storm the rebar will lean over. Any thoughts on that?
Yeah, the reason is that is simply will not work. PVC is great for some garden projects, but much too week and flimsy for this application. Thank you for asking
@@urbanfarmstead OH YOU ARE SO VERY WELCOME, I WATCH ALOT OF VIDEOS YOUR EXPLANATION IS CLEAR AND RIGHT ON POINT CAN YOU MAKE A COVER FOR THE FENCED IN PORTION IF POSSIBLE? THANK YOU.
The hardest part of this project is getting the panels. Will have to drive fair distance to get them. Just a suggestion for driving the re bar. I got a short piece of ridged conduit from a friend and attached in my case a tee connector to give me a larger striking surface. The second tool that me made was also made out of ridged pipe and two tee connectors on on each end so we would have the right length each time.
Hello dear Kyle. May I ask, regarding beds the length of the bed, should it be facing north to south making the faces of the trellis' face east and west? Do you recommend using two different plants one on the inside n the other on the outside?
Thank you for all the great content! I wish I had found your channel when I first started my garden, but I'm glad I found it to build my soil and make my garden better next year!

I love livestock (cattle or pig) panels for trellising. They make beautiful, durable structures for plant support. If you can make these trellises so that the bottom of the panel does not touch the soil, raise it up a few inches, it will not only give a little more height, but also, it will keep that bottom edge of the panel frame from rusting. Yeah, they might be galvanized, but they will begin to rust over time sunk a little down in damp soil.
Thank you for that suggestion! My plan is to build raised next year and to mount the trellis to the top rail of the beds so it will no longer touch soil. Thanks again.

Have a question that should be straight forward. When setting up a trellis for tomatoes and cucumbers do you go east to west or north to south. Half my friends say east to west the other half say north to south. The main wind comes from the west through out the summer then from the north west starting in fall. Stock panel suppliers are having problems getting them the price is $90 a panel. Will be using 4 x 4 by four foot high sheep fence 10 gauge top and bottom stran with 12 gauge in the middle
So useful. Would there be any problem if i replace the galvanized conduit pipe for a PVC one. It´s cheaper to me, so i would rather prefer it. Greetings from Peru.
Angela Jimenez Huamanlazo thank you! It could definitely work but just keep in mind that it will be strong but not as strong, so if you get extremely strong winds it could bend or even break. I think it would be fine though.
Love it! I get the idea of using tposts and twine to keep it cheap like most people do, but I prefer to over build anything I possibly can, and this looks like just the ticket for me. Now to find space in my tiny yard.
It’s me bugging you again. Do you position to trellises north to south and how far apart can I place them to get the most out of the sun. I’m building mine 3 feet wide because of my limited space. ??? I live in Delaware. Muchas Gracias
Saved for watching again later. Picking up two cattles panels this year, one for use now and one for later. Haven't seen this idea anywhere else, nice!
I've been using cattle panel arches but I have a problem with them collapsing under the weight of the fully grown vegetables in high wind summer storms which then damage the plants. This year I'm looking to reinforce everything heavily.
Really? I’d be interested the see your setup, because I can’t imagine them collapsing under any weight with the way I build them in my other garden. I would suggest sheep panels if you need more support
@@urbanfarmstead we get a derecho style t-storm occasionally and if the plants are full term, well, they go a little crazy with the amount of rain plus our watering.. and I have livestock and unlimited fertilizer so our plants grow up and over the arch both directions and just swallow it. Maybe we just need more spacing
Loved the extra tips and ideas - thank you for using the basic tool and then all the tools. Now I just have to figure out how to transport the panels without a truck
How do these panels perform in the wind with the rebar holding them up? I would think once covered with crop, that’s quite the natural sail. Any other means of stabilizing them? Thank
Mine did great! not even the slightest bend after a full season with heavy crops. If your garden if in an area that sees very heavy winds you could support them with something more substantial or you could use guy-wires for added security.

Angela Jimenez Huamanlazo thank you! It could definitely work but just keep in mind that it will be strong but not as strong, so if you get extremely strong winds it could bend or even break. I think it would be fine though.
@@urbanfarmstead ok no problem, it will work as a wall trellis by the moment. I'm already buying the materiales. Thanks for the answer.
Angela Jimenez Huamanlazo great! You’re welcome
This is the best trellis video I’ve seen! Thanks!
Jay Maison thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Tell us your background or about me video! How do you know so much about farming/gardening. Your garden is so neat and tidy
Charito thank you for that suggestion! That would be a fun one that I would love to create soon!
Love it! I get the idea of using tposts and twine to keep it cheap like most people do, but I prefer to over build anything I possibly can, and this looks like just the ticket for me. Now to find space in my tiny yard.
thank you! Yes, I’m all about over building too! This trellis with work great for many many years
Great video! Thank you!
Nice panels. Wondering how you orient your rows to take full advantage of the sun with raised panels.
The beds and panels are oriented north/south
Many thanks for this! Great idea!
Thank you
It’s me bugging you again. Do you position to trellises north to south and how far apart can I place them to get the most out of the sun. I’m building mine 3 feet wide because of my limited space. ??? I live in Delaware. Muchas Gracias
North/south and about 4 feet apart
@@urbanfarmstead muchas Gracias
Saved for watching again later. Picking up two cattles panels this year, one for use now and one for later. Haven't seen this idea anywhere else, nice!
James awesome! That’s a great idea! It’s my own design that I just thought up and I think it’s going to work very well.
I love the idea, thank you!
Thank you
Would this trellis be able to hold up raspberry plants? What would you recommend making for them?
Yes, but most raspberries I see are just grown in a beep row without needing a trellis
Loved the extra tips and ideas - thank you for using the basic tool and then all the tools. Now I just have to figure out how to transport the panels without a truck
Thanks! Yes, that’s the tricky part
