Discovered Dario Argento over a year ago, in cinema festivals, this movie was the first Argento I experienced, how weird it was, the actors played -not- perfectly, the metal music was coming out of nowhere, the plot and situations were sometimes almost laughable, then I saw phenomena, deep red, and finally Suspiria. It took me over one year but when I saw Suspiria I finally fell in love with Argento, and the eerie music always accompanying his direction. I finally stopped taking the acting too seriously, and that first odd feeling I felt when watching Opera, I now almost miss, as if I had woken up from the dream that is Dario Argento's filmography. Yes, I've found it. His movies are like dreams, imperfect, the characters are unfamiliar faces, their voice dubbed over and all those different languages mixed together, it all feels like a dream, even more so to a linguist, as my dreams sometimes feature several languages and accents. This soundtrack will always be reminiscent of the first time I experienced such an awakened dream.
Discovery Argento, first Suspiria, then Profundo Russo, then gems like Opera & Phenomena, were probably my top highlights as a movie consumer. Still haven't found anything to compare with the impression they made on first seeing them
@@josephk7946 You want the same kick ? Or more......Definitely get your hands on anything Mario Bava (but start with the gothic horror classics), And all 3 Forzani-Cattet movies - gialli-italian gothic -western-poliziotesco done the right way. And 3 quarters of Lucio Fulci of course - the later ones - well acquired taste but not as bad as people made em out to . Nor is latter day Argento as bad as people make it out. Stendhal Syndrome, Non ho Sonno, Terza madre have solid merits (depending on how far you go along in Argento Madness. Card Player certainly deserves another look. Phantom of the Opera has some delirious touches (and acting) and hey any movie with a Morricone score deserves attention and love. Anybody here ever watches Teruo Ishii ?
@@palmereldritch7777 I hadn't heard of Forzani-Cattet. Good to see gialli are still being made. I'm not a big fan of Bava. I didn't much like Blood & Black Lace, although I fairly recently watched LIsa & the Devil. Don't know Fulci well, as generally I don't like too much gore, but I did catch his House of Clocks which made quite an impression on me. As for Argento, I've seen nearly all his films (couple I haven't watched). Non ho Sonno & Card Player I really enjoyed, but - maybe I didn't understand it - but I just wish Terza Madre had never been made - I thought it was an abominable conclusion to the the Three mothers series. On the other hand I quite liked his 2009 film, Giallo. I'm also quite fascinated by Stendhal Syndrome, mainly because for me it has one of the best soundtracks (despite not being Goblin) but also because there's something weird going on with his use of his own daughter, Asia, in the part. Asia, has said she was raped about this time & made her own film about the trauma (which I haven't seen). I'm not quite sure what Dario was doing in this film, but I presume it was supposed to be cathartic somehow.
+Dan Warren (Forgottenretroworlds79) Your old internet buddy Pinkelson here. :) I didn't know you were into Argento. Truly an unique and beautifully twisted mind!
Ia kampa Oh hi! Your name seems familiar, did you comment on my gaming videos? Yeah, early Argento is a real trip, but his last two efforts were pretty lousy.
***** Yeah I did, and also you did on one of my music ones. :) "The Mother of Tears" is his only flick available cheaply on DVD in my country, what do you think - is it worth getting at all or is it pure stain on the legendary status of "Suspiria" and "Inferno"?
Ia kampa Mother of Tears is OK, but it is nothing like the other two. Much more violent, with some tasty nudity, and unintentional humour. If it's cheap, I'd buy it for sure. Giallo is much, much worse with that stupid Rambo-lookalike, and Dracula is not much better (but for the Gothic scenery and again nudity). Dario's a dirty old man!
***** I'll probably grab it then. Dracula looks like an amateur effort with its artificial, green-screened look and the reviews seem to confirm that it's as bad as it seems. At least we still got the old classics.
Somehow this is some of the saddest music I've heard. Most sad music is trying to be sad but this is creates a sense of grandiose mundanity that makes one contemplate the repetition and banality of daily life.

Nice ! I always liked OPERA and own the Dvd ( the working one after getting a replacement (wink) ) But I need to revisit this film very soon...since this theme wasn't Goblin, I dismissed it---But MAN--it's great ! Thank you !!
Asia began her career in La Chiesa looking down into the void and smiled. Anthony Bourdain was her soul-mate I think, but it was not enough to change his mind. I wish all my true friends well.
Watching the final scene with this score left me feeling...odd. This film is brilliant, and the score perfectly encapsulates it, but the location change, last kill and how she reacts was a bit weird to watch.
This theme is so good for what reason? I swear this genre has the best scores. 🖤🎶
Murals on the walls, red and purple velvet curtains, needles in eyes and gushing blood. Beauty as deadly as a jagged blade.

You need to see Inferno. It is the most dreamlike of all his films.

Yooo that old poster desing! It's rare to see movie poster like that these day
Perhaps Argento's last great movie. He was so sad after making it he never reached that level of greatness again, and it shows.

It was a very silly movie.

🤣😂 Tipic giallo!
@Peter Neal Tbh it was pretty obvious from the start who the murderer was. Doesn't say much about the movie's quality though.
