AHP AlphaTig 200x

  • for a detailed article on this welder go to goo.gl/6pxVdz or visit the weldmonger store here weldmongerstore... The AHP 2000 Alpha Tig 200x is an AC/DC Tig welder that comes complete with torch, ground clamp, foot pedal, regulator/flowmeter, and pigtail adapter for using with 115 volt power.
    The one I am reviewing in this video was sent to me several months ago and I wasn’t able to make the time to get it out and weld with it for quite a while.
    In fact, so much time passed that AHP has since come out with a newer version that has higher pulse capabilities. ( the new 2016 version has 2 ranges for pulse…high and low and pulses up to 200 pps)

    Jody, this short overview of AC settings is probably the best explanation I've ever heard. Not sure why but a lot of the terminology just clicked for me regarding polarity and AC balance/cleaning. Thanks from someone just starting to learn, much appreciated!

    after making a living Welding for 40+ years, I'm still learning everyday Jody... thank you a lot for your channel. I know there are a lot of welding channels out there, and I subscribe to several but I seen to get more out of you and your channel.
    95% of my experience is SMAW and FCAW of Heavy Equipment, so heavy metal for sure. I'm really enjoying re-aquanting myself with GTAW as well as Blacksmithing. gonna spend my next 40 years mastering the finer welding processes...
    Thanks for your contributions.

    Not registered for giveaway, just want to say that I have almost the same machine (it's called Riland's "Aurora InterTIG 200 AC/DC Pulse" here in Russia), almost same functions and ranges... It took me about 2 weeks of training on aluminum with all those settings but today I have to say that machines like that can help you to make the job just right. I'm welding old car's oil pans (20+ years old - so it takes enouth time to prepare them), cracked intake and exhaust manifolds and all that kind of stuff...
    Really going okay even without the foot pedal (just waiting for it).
    Thanks again Jody, you make great and very helpful videos, 90% of things I know about TIG welding I've learned from your vids... Thumbs up! ))

    I have the original AlphaTig 200x. I have tried just about every feature and am very happy with the machine. I've used it on 100 feet of 120V extension cord to fix an aluminum dock, stick welded 1 inch steel plate at nearly 100% duty for nearly 2 hours straight, etc. Stainless, mild steel, aluminum sheet, thick aluminum.....the AHP welder has never let me down. I'm building a TIG cooler to use a water cooled torch with it as I usually push more current and duty than the 17 torch cares for.

    Hey Jody, great video as usual. I have the new model you're talking about and I love it. They did update the torch to a flex head and a much nicer and more flexible cable. Prior to using it I had never touched a tig machine but did a lot of mig. It's a great first machine and actually a good one for more experienced welders too. Good luck to your other viewers.

    I've been struggling with the flux-core process for a while now, just too much heat for thin steel. Built up a new edge on an old axe head but spent some time blowing out the metal that was there before getting it built back up!
    Been wanting to start tig welding with its seemingly universal abilities but the best deal near me is ~$1400 for a used Diversion 165! That's alot of cheddar for something that can't even weld 1/4". Also, it doesn't have a digital readout, manual AC balance or pre/post-flow controls.
    I've learned so much from your videos that I know all the settings & what the knobs mean, they don't intimidate me. Don't really want a pure novice machine like the Diversion and even that is straining the budget to the max...

    If you have a Superflex torch hose you can add it to this to welder by using an "AW-430A" gas fitting available for about $10 at a local welding supply shop. Just make sure the part number has the "A" after it which designates 3/8" threads. Be sure to cover the fitting with a piece of rubber hose to prevent shorting. This setup gives you a longer more flexible hose and saves mucho $$$ over buying a new dinse/gas hose connector.

Would love to see a video of Tig welding thin sheet metal, like 18-20ga. A rusty old body panel where the thickness might vary due to age and rust..also a would love to see your opinion/review of the Lotus Tig200 acdc welder..I have had one for about a year (can't afford a Miller,AHP,HTP,Lincoln etc). After watching Jody's fantastic stuff for years, I have never found a single point of education that I have disagreed with from an applied science perspective, until this video :( From 9:15 to 9:45... the engineered science of welding has long since figured it all out and manufacturers have engineered equipment to specifically control all of the variables. Then again at 11:47 "square wave" technology eliminates heat loss due to current switching time, because the swing from EP to EN is instantaneous.
    Some actual oscilloscope pictures or some illustrated AC wave forms, would go a long ways helping to explain what happens with AC welding. Particularly, inverter machine's ability to manipulate and alter AC wave for shapes from a mechanically generated AC sine wave, to much more complex digitally synthesized waves. A better understanding of how those different shapes can be applied to various welding requirements is the key to better results. The guy can still weld circles around me...

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the scientific community is making new discoveries all the time. I really dont think they have everything figured out quite yet. A good example is that welding manufacturers are now discovering that the EP side of the AC cycle affects penetration more than previously thought. But originally, they thought and stated that EP strictly affected only cleaning action and EN was what affected penetration. They dont disclose that piece because it contradicts what they have hung their hat on for years and it would cause them to have to re label ac balance controls.
      But, you could be right on your switching time stance... I really do appreciate your feedback because it makes me want to dig deeper.

    • @YankeeinSC1
      @YankeeinSC1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 100% certain that amplitude=heat for our welding application.the triangle wave forms that miller has designed into it's dynasty line as an example, depart that zero graph point at an angle, meaning amperage increase over time, where as the square waves depart the zero line at a 90 degree angle, meaning no time elapses as the current reverses. The triangle wave form is for low heat or minimal heat input.

    • @YankeeinSC1
      @YankeeinSC1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to think that EN imparts heat because of the resistance the electrons encounter passing through the arc and into the aluminum. Conversely, for the portion of the wave that is EP, electrons have to fight through that layer however they can get back up to the electrode. The lower the frequency the wider that band. As you've mentioned, the longer portion of each wave that is EP, the more etching, literally as electrons bombard then fight their way through that oxidation layer from the metal side, literally ripping or chiseling it off on a microscopic level.

    • @YankeeinSC1
      @YankeeinSC1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly, but a good read through any of the legacy manufacturer's top of the line product manuals will help more than anything. Also check out Wikipedia on "Alternating current". The math portion is likely beyond the scope of our discussion, nor necessary for a solid understanding of AC welding. The graphs and terms defined there however will help build alternating current knowledge base. Who ever figured out it could be used for welding aluminum more effectively? pure genius...

    Hi Jody-ref polarity,I thought I learnt years ago that with DC the heat is split between pos and neg in the ratio 2:1 ie more heat at the positive electrode. Is this correct or too long-haired for you? Keep up the good work!!

    Jody, there's a thing I've always wanted to ask you. Which lens you use for your arc shots? I can see better through them rather than through my green tinted ones. They're certainly better quality then mines are so I'd like knowing the specs of yours. Hopefully I'll be able to find them also here in Europe, with our strange sizes of helmets we have.
    Thank you!
    Cheers!
