Largest doodlebug population in the world 🐜 | Quick Question for Paula Müller & Aaron Anselmi

Rare insect larvae with a sophisticated hunting technique: In this episode of »Quick Question«, students of molecular biology and biotechnology at TU Dresden take us to the “Dresdner Heide”, where they have found the largest population to date. Doodlebugs are the larvae of the antlion and build funnels in the sand in order to catch their prey. Ants and other prey animals slide down the funnel and can’t get out again. In the video, students Paula and Aaron tell us more about this special technique for catching prey and explain how, as part of a seminar, they have ascertained the population size.

Guten Tag. Eine tolle Dokumentation, finde ich. Ich konnte dank eines Zufalls ein Vollinsekt, also eine Ameisenjungfer, fotografieren. Die nachtaktiven Insekten kriegt man sonst wohl höchstens mithilfe einer Lichtfalle zu Gesicht. Ich kannte bisher das Tier nur aus einem Naturbuch und die Larve aus Naturdokumentationen. Falls es Sie interessiert, kann ich Ihnen meine Fotos (27 Aufnahmen verschiedene Ansichten) und Informationen zu den Aufnahmeumständen gerne zur Verfügung stellen. Die Bestimmung von Unterart und Geschlecht war mir allerdings nicht möglich.
