I would say exceptional rather than abnormal. They are impressive - each one of them!
I had a Newfoundland / Black Lab mix doggie, AND HE WAS huge, AND A BIG SWEETHEART. BUT HE ONLY LIVED TO 8 YEARS OLD, HE HAD DIABETES, AND EVENTUALLY KIDNEY FAILURE HAD MADE ME HAVE TO EUTHANIZE HIM. WHEN YOU HAVE A DOG THAT IS 185 LBS, AND HE CAN NO LONGER WALK OR STAND, AND HE CAN;T GO OUTSIDE TO PEE AND POO. THE KIDNEY FAILURE HAD MADE HIM NOT ABLE TO GO AND WALK OUTSIDE TO RELEIVE HIMSELF. I REALLY loved HIM. i MISS HIM TOO. i REALLY MISS ALL,OF THE DOGS THAT WE USED TO HAVE, AND THEY HAVE PASSED AWAY.
THE LOVE OF A DOG IS A PURE LOVE, THEY DON'T LIE. I KNOW THAT IT ALL SOUNDS REALLY STUPID OR FLAKEY, BUT, IT IS REALLY TRUE.

I have never had any of these wonderfully enormous canines myself but I had a friend who raised and sold Rotweillers quite a number of years ago! When I am out and about in my neighborhood and see neighbors walking their dogs I almost always ask if they will let me pet them. When they say yes I tell them "I am not able to have a pet now so I like to adopt one for a minute." They always smile when I say that!
Without question, my favorite dogs are the ones that you (and most of us) call "Gentle Giants!" The Great Dane, Akita, and the Shepherd breeds are the ones that I love most. I have seen a few of these around and it is always wonderful when I can give them some love and they respond in kind.

By the way, here is an interesting language lesson. You are definitely correct when you mentioned that Cane, for Cane Corso, is Italian for dog. In Italian it is pronounced kahn-a (long a) which is where we get our word for canine. It is from the Latin word for dog which is canis which is pronounced kahn-ees.

OKAY, SO THE LEONBURGER IS A HUGE POOCH, AND IS OF MIXED HERITAGE. BUT, I AM NOW AWARE THAT SOME BREEDS OF DOGS SHOULD NOT BE SO EASILY GOTTEN AS PETS if THEY MIGHT BE A BIT AGGRESSIVE. BUT, THERE ARE ALSO SOME DOGS LIKE THE BOERBOEL PUPS I AM SURE THAT I HAVE MISSPELLED THE NAME OF THE BREED OF THIS POOCHY. BUT, ONE OF THESE DOGS AS A PUP WOULD REALLY BE A great REWARD FOR ANYBODY That has NO IDEA how to ever end up being able to own a really HUGE fancy poochy like some of these breeds of dogs.

i HAVE ALWAYS WANTED A SAINT BERNARD DOG, BUT, I DO KNOW THAT BIG DOGS DON'T LIVE VERY LONG. IT CAN BE VERY SAD, BUT MAYBE SOME DAY I WILL HAVE A BERNIE. I ALSO LOVE PITTY MIXES. THE ONLY DOGS THAT I HAVE NOT HAD MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH IS REALLY SMALL DOGS. THE ONLY DOG THAT HAD BITTEN ME ON PURPOSE WAS A CHIHUAHUA MIX. IT WAS MY HUSBANDS GRANDMAS DOG. THEY both HAD WARNED ME TO NOT PET HIM. BUT, HE HAD WAGGED HIS TAIL SO SWEETLY, SO, OF COURSE, i HAD TO PET HIM, AND THEN, BLAM, HE BIT ME!!!!!
