Kim, I love the videos. They are so helpful. I am in the middle of a tufted headboard and couldn't have even begun without the video. The ladies at the fabric store didn't have I clue. I am doing this at my vacation home so its taking longer since I'm not here all the time. I am to the point of adding the batting and sewing the fabric. Wish me luck. I need it. This is a BIG project for me. Carol J.
Thanks Kim, I enjoy your videos, I've recently started my own small business doing upholstery after buying a Sailrite nearly 4 years ago, I do now have a proper industrial machine. Regards from Scotland, David.
So glad it has inspired you to finish a project. I would love to see your finished product. If you shared it on our FB when you're finished that would be great. Love your painting videos! Thanks for watching, Kim
Great question. We made that headboard ourselves. Cut all the lumber, glued and fastened it together, padded it with foam and dacron, drilled all holes and tufted it.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. We are working on more videos. We have a few about making headboards on the way. Sometimes I feel like people don't really care about our videos, but when I receive a comment like yours it really makes me smile. Thanks again.
hi I write from mexico and I send warm greetings ... I love how well your videos are facts and I would like to go up many many videos that are very interesting and very well explained ... I love your upholstery and you I quite understand, please upload more videos ... thanks
You can do it Carol. It may be good that you are doing it at your vacation home. You can take it in steps and walk away when frustrated. Many people say we make it look easy but I assure you it is not. Can't tell you how many times we have pulled staples to reposition fabric. Please share pictures with us when you are done. Kim
Hi Kim...thank you so much for this tutorial. Trying to do a floating tufted headboard but would also like to add 2 mirrors on the headboard. Would you happen to have an idea or a tutorial on that?
OMG... what a savior ! This video is great. I went through a few of these videos before stumbling on yours. After watching a few, I still had so many questions that were not answered, but your video is extremely informative and well made. A new subsriber from Montreal, Canada.
Thanks Rosa, Yes it costs less to do it yourself but for me its the pride I get in doinging it myself. My beautiful Victorian home is filled with very low cost to no cost refurbished furniture. It becomes habbit after a while. Thanks for subscribing to my channel. Join us on Facebook and share pictures of your projects. Kim
Omg I absolutely love it!! I want wall panels with tufting..like picture fames but instead of putting pictures I want the fabric with tufting. Great video.. Im gonna have to show my husband , to see if he can make headboards for the kids beds:)
I've been wanting to tuft and have all these DIY tutorials but no one ever mentioned compensating the fabric for the holes!! I certainly would have been bummed when it wouldn't turn out right XD
And do you think tufting would work with a temperpedic mattress, its about 6 inches wide. We got a new mattress and I'm using the old one to make a quick square couch.
Hi Alice, Lets try and unconfuse you! This twin headboard is 40"W (my mattress is 39"W not 27) My headboard frame is 2" thick and I used a 2" foam plus Dacron to pad (approximately 3" thick total) So, that gives me my 2" frame plus padding of 3" for a total of 5" in thickness. So 5" each side ( 10" total) Plus my 40" width of headboard. Now I add 2" to each side to staple on the back of the frame. So when I wrap my tape measure around the headboard I get 54" total cut width. : )Kim
This is what excellent craftsmanship is all about!!! Amazing work! The best tutorial ever. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work Kim. God Bless you Love the fabric, did you buy online?
Kim your video is great. I have a theory on tufting both sides. Do both sides at once. The button needle goes thru both sides and a button on each end of the string tying the buttons together. After all the buttons are tied then staple the main side around the back side and then staple the back side to the edge, then cover the edge with ply grip or decorative nails, or gimp. Just a theory.......
Hi Hollie, we make our own buttons to match the fabric, but I bet you could pick something up in a craft store that would work. Thanks for watching. Please join us on FaceBook. Kim
I'm planning on making one of these in the near future. Few questions what is the best material to use? I would prefer something that I can keep clean. I'd love to also add a nail head trim how would I go about doing that?
me encanto ...una pregunta?? que tipo de tela uso y como se llamarian los botones que uso ??????????????desde ya se lo agradesco que Dios siga bendiciendola
Thanks so much. Go for it! I would love to see your finished headboard when your done. If you could post pics on our FB page it would be great. Good luck I know you can do it. Thanks for watching, Kim
Hi Kim, I am attempting to make my own tufted headboard with a nail trim, would you reccomend creating the finished headboard with the nails hammered in (leaving holes in the plywood of course) and then poking the needle and buttons through for the tufts?
Hello, I have never done tufting on both sides so I am not sure how to approach it. If I come up with anything I will let you know. Thanks for watching our videos, Kim
Kim, I love this! Except my headboard cannot be detached and it is made of metal. Is it possible and does it make sense doing a headboard as in your video but as a covering using the same technique?
I wanted to make a headboard on a pre made bed and I actually used cardboard and stick it to my bed and it turned put pretty well. Thanks for your support. I used gum strips and fevi bond to stick it to my bed. I could share a photo if you want me too.
I will try, I will be buy an apt. soon (untill the end of a year) so I will try to. Thank you once again for posting the video. P.S. I tried getting the same needle as you did but I could not find it, would you tell me where to get it and also what string is best? Thank you :)
Dravish Garg Not really sure how strong cardboard would hold up but if you try it let us know how it works. I would invest in plywood if your going to go through all that work.
Finally i completed my headboard yes it worked pretty fine and i used lots of artline glue sticks to stick the board to my bed but it fell off so we anchored some nails in it and now its perfectly fine
Great tutorial, the only thing I would do differently is fold all the pleats in the same direction, pointed down so dust can’t settle into the upward facing pleats.
Are certain fabrics harder to do this tufting to than others? I've wanted to do this, but would like to use silk. It looks as if it would be easier to do with fabrics that have a lot more stretch though, right?
Hi Kim i have never tufted before and my headboard is a Finsbury shape to fit a king size bed. Can you tell me how do you figure out how far apart and how many holes to make?
Fantastic work! M just wondering where do I order the foam in bulk. I wanna try it at home. Could u please share with us where to get the foam at cheaper price? Thanks and much appreciated.
I was thinking of making a tufted, city scape, art piece to be displayed above my couch. Would this even work out with the tufting? Or would the tufting cause the city scape print to look too distorted to even bother trying?
Thanks for your comment. It gets easier with practice. Get yourself a piece of furniture at a flea market for $10 dollars and search for some really inexpensive fabric then give it a try. Take pictures as you tear down so you will know how to put it back together. Have some fun. Kim
Great tutorial! I'm making an extra tall (50") headboard for our king size bed. I want to do deep diamond tufting but can't find a velvet in a width that will accommodate for the deep tufts. Any tips on how to sew my fabric together without the seam of the velvet being visible? The widest I've been able to find is 54" and based on my calculations need fabric 139"x91" to reach around to the back with 2"inches or so to staple. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hi Nina, The only way not to see seams is to figure out where your tufting fold are and place your seams in them. The seam will be a zig zag. Not easy to figure out, but you could play with muslin first and use it for a pattern. Hope this helps, Kim
Hi Kim, When you measured your fabric and sewed the pieces together to get the width you needed, how did you hide the seam?? I couldn't see one on the headboard.
Hi Suzanne Pratt, this particular headboard did'nt require a joint in the fabric. You would start with another piece and overlap them on the folds. You end up with a zig zag overlap. Not sure how to explain it but hope this gives you the idea. Kim
Hi Amanda,Thanks for watching. The buttons in this headboard are #30. You can use any size that looks good to you. There is no rule. Please like us on FaceBook where we can discuss more and show your projects.
That sounds interesting. Please send pictures of your project when you are done. I would love to see them. A video response would be even better, Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel. Kim
KimsUpholstery ha, apologies for the briskness of my last comment. The construction will be similar to this headboard, except it'll just be a rectangle that will be set in a wood frame. The MDF would be the substrate for that rectangular tufted part. Dear Lady, very nice and clean job, i was looking for something like this to repair my childrens bed. Thank you very much
Hi Ms. Kim! Indeed you're an inspiration to us! My heartfelt thanks to you for imparting to us in details your knowledge in reupholstery! ❤️🙏👍
Great question. We made that headboard ourselves. Cut all the lumber, glued and fastened it together, padded it with foam and dacron, drilled all holes and tufted it.
I love how detailed you video. It makes it much easier to make the headboard right the first time. Thanks!!!
Great tutorial, you actually both show and tell instead of just showing. Looking forward to my future tufting projects.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. We are working on more videos. We have a few about making headboards on the way. Sometimes I feel like people don't really care about our videos, but when I receive a comment like yours it really makes me smile. Thanks again.
I've seen several methods but yours seem to give a more realistic feel and expensive too. love it!!!!
Thank you Natasha, We do have the full video available in more detail on our website. Classes.kimsupholstery.com.

That was one of the easiest methods of tufting that I've seen! Thanks!

Hi Grant, Yes it is an air staple gun. We use the Fasco brand and all of ours are the long nose staple guns. You can buy them on line I'm sure. Kim
Thanks for your comment Wendi. We use a Fasco, long nose, stapler.
Thanks for watching Sebastain. Please share pictures of your project. Kim

This is great. I want to tuft a sleigh bed. Both footboard and headboard. Do you have a technique for deep tufting both sides?
Beautiful work Kim...
Hi Alice,
Lets try and unconfuse you!
: )Kim

Love the fabric, did you buy online?
Kim your video is great. I have a theory on tufting both sides. Do both sides at once. The button needle goes thru both sides and a button on each end of the string tying the buttons together. After all the buttons are tied then staple the main side around the back side and then staple the back side to the edge, then cover the edge with ply grip or decorative nails, or gimp. Just a theory.......
Was there a first video showing how you put on the batting and decided where to put the button holes?
We use a button press with a cutter and dies to make the buttons.
Kim
This is lovely. You did a great job!
Hi Hollie, we make our own buttons to match the fabric, but I bet you could pick something up in a craft store that would work. Thanks for watching. Please join us on FaceBook. Kim

Can you tuft a headboard that has designs already?
Hi Kim, I am attempting to make my own tufted headboard with a nail trim, would you reccomend creating the finished headboard with the nails hammered in (leaving holes in the plywood of course) and then poking the needle and buttons through for the tufts?
Thank you, I believe I might succeed now. Which staple gun are you using please?
Awesome video!! Do we need to use batting? Or can we just use the fabric?
Wow! good video, can I ask what staple gun you are using?
Hello, I have never done tufting on both sides so I am not sure how to approach it. If I come up with anything I will let you know. Thanks for watching our videos, Kim
Kim, I love this! Except my headboard cannot be detached and it is made of metal. Is it possible and does it make sense doing a headboard as in your video but as a covering using the same technique?
Kim I love your work! Thank you for sharing your techniques. I would like to know which is the best smaller pneumatic stapler you have used for work.
Hi Raquel,
I use a fasco long nose upholstery stapler. I have a few of them. Thanks for watching, Kim
I wanted to make a headboard on a pre made bed and I actually used cardboard and stick it to my bed and it turned put pretty well. Thanks for your support. I used gum strips and fevi bond to stick it to my bed. I could share a photo if you want me too.

Looks amaizing, thank you so much for the tutorial I was looking for one for years now. Definetly going in my favorites :)
Thank you Jenna Mitrovic . Will you be making your own headboard? Kim
I will try, I will be buy an apt. soon (untill the end of a year) so I will try to. Thank you once again for posting the video.
P.S. I tried getting the same needle as you did but I could not find it, would you tell me where to get it and also what string is best?

What a great video!! You make it look really easy!!
is there a part one to this video? on what she did to make the headboard before she tufted it?
Hi KIm i have another question, do you have tutorial on how to make the wholes in the foam and board to do tufting? Do you use just drill?
wow Ms Kim, you are great! Do you sell what you make?
Thanks Carmen, I don't make anything specifically to sell. My work is commissioned by clients.
Thanks for watching. Kim

Is a gel memory foam mattress top appropriate for a tufted headboard?
Wow very cute! Looking to make this for my room. What kind of fabric did you use?
Fantastic work! M just wondering where do I order the foam in bulk. I wanna try it at home. Could u please share with us where to get the foam at cheaper price? Thanks and much appreciated.
Tenzin Chokden foam is not cheap, no mater where you buy it. Start your own business and get a supplier to sell to you. That's about it. Kim
I was thinking of making a tufted, city scape, art piece to be displayed above my couch. Would this even work out with the tufting? Or would the tufting cause the city scape print to look too distorted to even bother trying?
Obrigado por seu gentil comentário Jaqueline. Kim
Would u recommend a stretchy fabric for this, or does it not matter?
Hi Kim, I've watched your videos on tufting and would like to know how to determine the size of the diamonds. my headboard is for a queen bed...thanks
What size of buttons do you use? Do you use different size buttons for different size headboards?
Thanks for your comment. It gets easier with practice. Get yourself a piece of furniture at a flea market for $10 dollars and search for some really inexpensive fabric then give it a try. Take pictures as you tear down so you will know how to put it back together. Have some fun. Kim

How many inches of padding did you use? I would like my headboard to be full and plush. Also, what type of fabric is the best for the headboard?
I was wondering, what would the cost be to make this bed frame? Would it be cheaper
purchasing the bed frame itself or making it?
how do you get your headboard to stand as you work on it? love your work!
Crystal. Clamp the HB to our workhorse or a table. Kim
Kim's Upholstery thanks for your reply😆😆
What size staples do you suggest using
Can you teach us how to use the button needle for tufting?

Hi Kim, hope all is well. In one of your videos you mention where to purchase kit headboards. Do you mind sending me that website link?
Thank you for your comment. Kim
I am making a wood framed headboard, how much smaller should the MDF substraight be? Thanks and thanks for the video!

Hello again,
Yes this sounds about right. The space you leave may very due to the thickness of your fabric. I would try not to have your Dacron go into this area. If you could build the frame last you could be sure everything fits as you want.

Is it an air staple gun? Thanks again for your awesome videos from New Zealand!!
SO what do you do get home depo to precut the wood for you ?how much does this project cost
Erica Young I don't know if a lumber store would precut the pieces for you. We cut everything our selves. As for cost It really depends on your area.
Hope you can make it happen,
Kim
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial!

How much is it if I buy that size and tufted designs?
Where do you buy the buttons... Craft stores?
How thick is the foam you're using on that bed?
dobakito, determining the spacing of your buttons would depend on the height of your headboard and the fabric you choose. It really boils down to what ever looks good to you. If it's your headboard and you like it, it's perfect.
Kim
Hi Paisley,
Try Rowley Company or your local sewing store. Thanks for watching our videos and please subscribe.

What thickness of plywood are you using
What are the things I will need to make it and also the materials
+Caleyah Houston Lauan plywood., 2x3" lumber, 3/4" lumber, foam, Dacron, fabric, buttons, tools and lots of patience. Thanks for watching.
where do you get your fabric from? do you know of any good websites online?
Best tufting video ever
Hi Kim...when all was said and done how much would you say this would cost to make? :)
Hello.could you tell me please how called this fabric?
