Important notes: Please do not send any hate towards Nikki or Dan Phillippi. This video is intended to be a critique of a real-life situation many pet owners can be faced with, as well as a learning resource for those who may be going through similar with their dogs. I felt it was important for me to go into this situation as unbiased as possible, and prior to filming and editing, I did not know of any pre-existing drama of any sort concerning the creators I am critiquing, or their treatment of their animals. BEFORE you choose to euthanize any pet due to behavioural (or suspected mental) issues, please do the following:
    1) Take your pet to the vet to check for any medical reason which would affect your dogs temperament.
    2) Consult with multiple trainers and behaviourists.
    3) If your dog is a specific breed, seek the guidance and assistance of a Breed Specific Rescue.
    Think critically. Be kind.
    xx
    Em

I think they are making a lot of excuses to make themselves look better, like Caesar says in the dog whisperer , its not the dogs fault, its the owner, they show no remorse or emotion when talking about bowser, The moment he said that he wanted to take the dog out like old yeller, makes me sick, I lost my cat and had to euthanize him I cry every time i think about it, I think after spending a decade with a dog and treating it like family they would be more broken up about it, there are a lot of rescues and foster homes that will take in a aggressive dog, where they train and analyze what triggers the dog,

From what I looked up. Their son basically annoyed the dog. I think the husband even said the son pulled on the dogs ear so much that the dog had cauliflower ear and had scarring. Idk why parents refuse to teach their toddlers and children to be gentle with animals. I applaud you for staying so calm cause I couldn't even finish the video

Damn this hits hard...my parents adopted a dog from an abusive home where the boyfriend of the woman would beat the dog so bad that he didn't trust anyone anymore. So when my parents brought him home all he would do was hide under the bed and would attack anyone who would come close. My mom had to work with him until he was able to trust people again. When they found out I was coming along, they got worried about how he would react to a baby. The difference is that my parents showed me how to touch the dog and not hurt him by accident and he never did anything to me. That dog got so attached to me that he never left my side. He was a really good boy.

We got a dog when I was little who kept biting people, we assume because of past trauma. She also kept escaping because she was a hound and wanted to hunt smells. My parents didn't know how to handle it. But we still didn't kill the dog. We brought it back to the shelter and they informed us they'd found a home with no kids, and a lot of space for the dog.
I know many people may not be able to find rehoming for a rough dog, but they seem to have a huge internet following. They could ask the public, ask a friend, etc.

Honestly. Baby gates exist. It would have been so easy to have them in separate rooms to ease a dogs anxiety and keep the child away safely. My mom instilled in us from birth to be gentle. Any time we were in contact with and animal the first thing she would say is “gentle” and if we weren’t we were removed from the situation. This is on the parents 100%. I got her into training and working with her and did the" shepherding." Also my son would get in big trouble and be separated from her if he tried to poke or even think of climbing on her. Now he knows not to do and teya loves him now while stopped mouthing him or trying to jump all over him. I hate it when parents let their child do to whatever to pets. @@Alicia.Marie.13 The thing is, I did not hear, not even once, about them getting their dog professional help, and if they did, we do not know up to what degree of help did they try to provide their dog with. In one of their other videos, Nikki mentions how they stopped taking Bowser out for walks anymore. If thats the case, the dog had even more pent up energy and stress in him. If he was "too agressive," you can still take your dog out for walks or give it exercise while keeping everyone safe. Plus, the child, in this case, was the aggressor (although its not the child's fault either- the parents have to supervise, and teach your child manners too, as the child gets older as well) of course the dog is going to react in the way that it did. But instead, they chose to kill their dog. And they chose to kill their dog before their big move. (And they posted it on IG and TH-cam-money and views maybe? Sounds suspish, since they got sooooo many views after they posted this video. Im pretty sure that was going to happen...) How convenient. 🤥😐😑😤😤😤

Think of the immense number of perfectly healthy dogs with no behavioural issues that are sitting in shelters waiting to be adopted. It is not at all unreasonable to say he is not an adoptable dog. I don't think they did everything right but I also think behavioural euthanasia can be the only course of action in some situations. I agree with Mikaela, it is not the job of the HSUS to rehabilitate your dog that you did not bother to train. They do not have the resources for that kind of work and every day behaviorally good dogs end up being put to sleep due to lack of space. It is on the owners to have educated themselves, educated their dog, trained their dog and found solutions to the problems they have caused. They could have possibly worked with a smaller breed specific rescue to help try and rehome the dog or with a trainer/behaviorist who could have given more insight. Listening to these people they got a dog they didn't know a lot about, did not do training with, who did not fit in with their lifestyle.

I understand that kids come first. But this dog could’ve easily been rehomed. There’s no timeline in which a dog can be rehomed; you see senior dogs in shelters all the time that go on to be adopted for their final years.
I had to put my American Eskimo dog, Jango, to sleep in March. This hits so hard for me because i HAD to put him down because he was SICK and his quality of life was GONE. We had no other option, he didn’t have the option to live longer with me or with someone else... i guess I’m biased because my wounds are still fresh but this situation disgusts me because they did not explore all options, they just chose death for him..
Edit: I’d like to add that i understand he was an aggressive/reactive dog because of experiences when he was a puppy, but i really think Bowser could’ve found love in a home with someone who understands and knows how to live with aggressive/reactive dogs. There are a lot of people with that kind of experience who could’ve handled him and let him live the rest of his life.

I saw their video first and for me there is just no excuse. They had the dog for 9 years and the baby is not 8 years old so let that sink in first.
Dogs don't get aggressive over night, they also said it was not the first time, it has been an ongoing problem since the dog was young and never corrected the behaviour. The also said they contemplated the idea a few years back so again nothing new.
With their reach and amount of followers they have, there is no way nobody could take the dog, there are dogs beeing adopted at 10, 11 even 12 years old. Yes I know the aggression makes it difficult but is not imposible specially with the amount of reach out they have.
I'm also with you, the only reason an animal has yo be put down is if their life quality is compromised, so no you are not being biased, they failed their dog.

My parents had to rehome their dog Dickens when they adopted me. That’s what responsible people do. He wasn’t suitable for a household with a child. When I got older we had many other wonderful dogs that were right for our family. They all lived long, happy lives...including Dickens.
Also, it seems to me that they were not ready for this dog 10 years ago in the first place. They let this behavior from the dogs trauma sort of fester over time and they got a breed of dog known to be extremely energetic and takes a ton of time and dedication to training. It’s all very irresponsible in my opinion and I hope people learn from this.

Since I adopted her I have been very clear to my brother about the proper way to pet/hold her. If he’s being too rough I immediately take her away. Once he wanted to pet her but at this time she wasn’t trained and I warned against it. However he still touched her and she but him. Because of this he knows that when I tell him he shouldn’t pet her, it’s because he could scare her and get hurt. It saddens me that people don’t really teach their children about respecting their pets.

My vet has been working curbside for a year and I've brought my dog in a muzzle for every appointment because I can't go in with him and make sure he's not too stressed out. I get it, people are generally nervous if they see a dog with a muzzle, you automatically assume they are dangerous, especially if it's a breed of dog that is big and strong etc. But I also understand you, it doesn't matter your dog didn't bite anyone ever, you are more assured that nothing will go wrong, sometimes at the vets, if dog gets a shot or something, it can hurt, and they may try to bite, even if they don't actually want to hurt anyone, it's just that pain at the moment causes them to react, and you are smart because of it

Yes because toddlers understand how to not mess with a dog 100% of the time enough to safely rely on simply saying “don’t do that” 🤦🏼‍♀️ And how do you know they didn’t discipline the kid?? You can’t keep your eyes and focus glued on both a dog and a toddler at every second of every day. Sure you could try to keep them apart constantly with gates and doors etc, but try to imagine the stress of parenting a small human that can’t control their own choices yet alongside an unpredictable dog.

@@MusicalFilly it's any parents' responsibility to teach children to be gentle with animals. I have worked with plenty of toddlers, and no, they DON'T understand that they can't hit the dog when it takes a toy from them. They DON'T understand that they shouldn't pull on an animal's tail or legs or ears. But the parents need to correct this behavior the SECOND it happens. Toddlers are hard to keep track of, and you can't watch them every second, but that doesn't remove the responsibility they have as parents and pet owners to keep both child and dog safe.

I’ve worked for a dog trainer for 4 years now. The second they had an issue with aggression they should have seen a trainer. Early aggression is easily fixable. Knowing that they have children and not dealing with the problem is a huge issue. They just ignored the problem and the dog paid for it.

Watching this, with my dog Bowser next to me is so upsetting! 😭 I have three kids that have grown up with cats and dogs around always... And part of my parenting duty (In my opinion) was to teach them to respect and understand the limits of the pets! Pets are never toys, and euthanasia isn't the solution unless the pet is too sick!!!! :(

When you make that decision, it's either by law or because ALL other options are impossible. Pretty sad to think a TH-cam with millions of "fans" couldn't find another more appropriate home for even an "aggressive" animal. They're extremely selfish to think they're world, of all people, is so small. Insane. That animal could have been rehabbed and trained by a professional quite quickly.

This was a great and comprehensive video! Thank you for addressing the problematic ways that "spirit animal" is used, as well as calling their dog "bipolar." That just reeks of ableism and insensitivity. I am also intrigued to know if Bowser was ever socialized with his litter. The couple says often that they had him for his entire life and obviously got him when he was a very young puppy, so I'm wondering if part of his perceived behavioural issues had anything to do with him not having the proper amount of time to be socialized with his litter and mother. But yeah other than that, this whole situation screams negligence. If this couple could afford to have a home euthanasia, I'm sure they could've afforded to properly look into dog training, behaviourists, and breed specific care and information.

I have 3 dogs, honestly they have all exhibited similar behavior, and I can't justify putting them down and ending their life over normal dog aggression. My daughter had to learn where NOT to touch the dogs and where NOT to go that is their territory. She's 9 now but since the age of 2 she has been bitten and has even bled as well as other family members even with behavior training they are impulsive and DOGS not humans and they snap with things that we would never assume would set them off. Especially as pack animals when ONE goes off the others join in and one of older dogs was injured at the time, recovering and she's a Shiba and can be agressive. She felt threatened while I was feeding our other dogs and she decided to attack my smallest dog and could have killed him. It seriously frightened us but now that she's healed we have not had any issues BUT we feed them in a crate now. So, we learned from that and we have muzzled trained.

After a week they wanted to get rid of it, and then the next day decided to keep it. They keep dragging their feet on training and taking him to the vet. She contacted me in a panic because the dog bit her kid after shoving an iPad in its face. I told them several times to contact a husky rescue or a trainer prior to the incident, but here we are. I feel so bad for the dog. I keep hearing stories like this and it breaks my heart.

So I know it is not the appropriate place to feed a dog but I can shed some light on why people do it. The kitchen floor is generally the easiest floor in the house to clean, especially if you have carpeting in the rest of the house.

Yes... I supervise my 2 dogs and 6 cats better than this couple did with 1 kid and 1 dog.... 6 yrs and not one incident in my house.... And I have my neices and nephews over a lot too... 🙄

My 4 year old basset hound got attacked by a pit bull mix a few weeks ago. He got his stitches out a week ago. I made sure to warm him back up with walks and seeing other dogs from afar while on the walks. I was very worried he would get aggressive after the attack. We went to the dog park this morning and he was nervous around big dogs so I kept him in the small dog area. He does know and is comfortable with the small dogs. Bassets are a more clam breed in general. I was very happy with how well he did.

So, here is my story about why I kinda hate it when people say "Oh, we had to put our dog down because he/she became agressive towards our toddler"
Years ago my aunt and uncle had a Schnauzer called Sargent Pepper, he was the sweetest, calmest, best boy ever. He was already an older dog (like around 10 or 12) and I spent a couple of weeks at their house, he (the dog) loved to curl up between my legs and have his head scratched, but he didn't run much or liked to be bothered too much because well he was old and not as active anymore. A couple months latter I found out my aunt and uncle had to put him down because he bit a kid (not their own but the same age and they were playing together). And I was SHOCKED, I couldn't believe he did that, he was so calm and nice, but I was like "If they thought it was the only choice, they must be right".
A while after I went to the same house and they had gotten their kid a Beagle puppy, and I watched him (their kid) and two other kids (one of them was the one who got bit) "playing" with the puppy. The poor little puppy kept crawling under the bed, shaking, trying to get away from the children and they would crawl chasing the dog, grab him by the leg and pull him out while the dog tried to hold on to the carpet and kept shaking. THAT IS WHY THAT KID GOT BIT: Not because the dog was agressive, but because this children thought dogs were toys and probably did something that hurt or scared the dog.

Exactly! I've never had a dog myself but I know almost all creatures in the canid family are instinctively protective over food so it's not smart to make them think you're going to take their food. To kill a dog for biting because their food was taken is stupid. Parents should've kept the kid away from the dog's bowl.

Your ability to be so empathetic towards these people while also being critical is admirable. This situation was very likely avoidable, but they did nothing to prepare this dog for its life, they did nothing to prepare this dog for a new baby in the house, and they failed to separate their child from situations where the dogs boundaries were being invaded.
They failed their dog, they failed their child, and it led to them making poor, hasty decisions that resulted in the end of a poor animals life. Meanwhile, there is still another dog in their house.

My parents always taught me and my brother who is 3 years younger than me to be very respectful of animals, especially dogs. My mother always said to not ever get in a dogs face, or to approach them suddenly, and to be calm. I want to study and work with dolphins when I'm older, and I think understanding boundaries and limits is especially important for anyone. I know bunnies and dogs have *very* different temperaments, but I'm using my bun as an example for my point (Because my puppy is not a good example by any means). My bunny is absolutely the sweetest thing ever. I haven't left his side for more than 5 hours since last May, so we're very close. Even so, no matter how much he's comfortable with sitting in my lap, I always keep in mind at the back of my head that he is a bunny, and he may not like all of our interactions if forced. It breaks my heart to hear a child it bitten because his parents failed to teach him how to behave around their dog. To me, respect and understanding are the two utmost important things when owning any animal.
EDIT: But all things aside, you're looking gorgeous today Em.
