Hello friends! I accidentally made the video go live a day before it was meant to - whoopsie. Happy accidents, I guess! I am SO EXICTED about this because Robin is super cool, we have some fun languages in common, and this was just a nice wholesome chat about languages, life and more. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it - and stay tuned for the video on his channel coming soon!

In case your language partners haven't told you by this hour of the day... the base form of the verb is: "Confundir." And NEVER SAY: "confundar" because it doesn't exits in Spanish. 21:00

So, this is gonna sound weird and a bit rude (lo siento) but I loved hearing you work through your Spanish. Maybe you forgot some words, maybe it was hard but watching you keep going and keep trying really comforted me. "Constantly forgetting ", relearning, and above all being honest to our levels are probably the greatest entity of being 'polyglot', as they're not the permanent resident of 'safety chamber ', they passionately explore their limits; irrespective of all hostility.

Both of your Japanese are amazing:) While I love learning languages and am passionate enough to try and find time to stick to all of them, sometimes I can't help but feel defeated realising how little my progress has been and how much I've lost what I've learned in each language. Watching the two of you in this video was inspiring both in terms of your honesty/authenticity and the apparent efforts that you've put into those languages to reach this point. I never knew Chinese syntax was this difficult for non-native speakers, when looking at a perspective from you guys. Additionally, Chinese has very little shared vocabularies with western languages, unlike Japanese with katakana. For instance you guys are trying to say 挑戰, but in Japanese, I bet there is a word which would sound something similar to English.
When you encounter higher level Chinese, the syntax will be a little more tougher, because Chinese language loves to throw in expressions referenced from classical Chinese, examples like 此地不宜久留 vs 這裡不適合停留太長時間, and the vocabularies are starting to get more flexible where you can sometimes kick off a character and still meant the same thing.

    • @M_SC
      @M_SC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

English used to be a lot more like that, but because so many people speak it who arent traditionally from an English background, the literary and old style phrases have been dropped because too many people didn’t know them. English has simplified itself a lot to work for the people who use it. If millions and millions of Non Chinese people start using Chinese at work and at social events i think the same thing will happen.

MY TWO FAVOURITE POLYGLOT TH-camRS - COULD MY DAY GET ANY BETTER?!?
    My view on video:
For me learning Japanese, the hardest part has actually been vocab. I love Kanji (same as Robin, I find it fun), and grammar was usually pretty easy for me to grasp, but something about memorizing the right reading + the meaning + pitch accent was always difficult for me. The only thing that works in anki right now.
I haven’t done much with Keigo yet, but I am very nervous that I’ll accidentally use casual talk with my iTalki teacher, or if I use Keigo with my Japanese friends on Tandem. So far, I’m good, but it still makes me nervous.
Man, now your speaking French which I already speak, I feel like this video is tailor made lol.
I definitely agree with just putting lots of time towards French! I learned French in school, and there really were lots of times when I felt like I hated French and was bad at it. I’m so glad I never dropped the class, and my French teacher was always kind to me and encouraged me to do my best.
As for the pressure, although I’m nowhere near a polyglot yet, I often feel like I’m misleading people. If I make a mistake in French, a lot of times I’ll think “Man, am I really good at French after all?”. With Japanese, I’m still a beginner, so I still feel like my mistakes are just part of learning. Its useful to remind myself of all the mistakes I make in English. I forget certain words all the time, and I still have to google a word now and again. Its okay to make those mistakes, even if your advanced in the language.
I don’t speak any Spanish, but I did go to a Spanish immersion school in my first few elementary years. My parents told me that I was really good at it at the time (I’ve forgotten all of it, I can barely count to ten now) and it was my first time with other languages. I hope one day to reconnect with that Spanish, but it’s certainly not a priority yet. I’ll be working on Japanese for quite a few years before I even think of learning other languages - and Afrikaans is probably my next choice, since I’m half South African.
Lol, I definitely understand the “あの” slips, I use it more than “Um” at this point, even with English, and people always get confused. To which I respond with “あのうう… It’s hard to explain.”

@@vangogh8644 I’ve been learning French for four years in School, and two years self studying (worth noting that I didn’t study very often per day though, I likely could’ve reached my level faster if I invested more time and money into studying). I am Canadian, so for our Junior High French classes are required, and for High School they’re optional. I’m taking them again for Grade 11, just to help maintain the language since my High School didn’t offer Japanese. I’ve only been studying Japanese for a month now, but I’ve always loved the country. I really appreciate the honesty of this video. Sometimes we feel like we are the only ones struggling and, as you said (it was the part in french I think), it is important to show the mistakes as well and not try to give a perfect image. As a language learner, I think this video is way more inspiring than seeing seemingly perfect people.
I'm very impressed about the taking-notes-in-japanese part, I tried it once and it just seemed impossible. And you just answered very honestly my everlasting question about how to maintain our highest level in all languages: you don't, they just keep varying in level and we keep forgetting and remembering.

This was so fun and just comforting to watch! It's really nice to hear from you both so honestly about your experiences, especially as fellow very-online language learners. I loved getting to watch the French and Spanish without subtitles and feel like part of the multilingual chat too! I can't wait to come back to this someday when I've studied some Japanese and be able to follow another one of the discussions in a new way :)

this is actually crazy. I was really convinced that forgot all my french because my level of speaking was never high enough in school (95 in listening tests and 0 in writing tests). I studied it for 7 years and got to the point of really understanding almost everything but i was simply never able to speak… so i gave up on french even after i started studying other languages.
But here i forced myself not to look at the subtitles and it’s crazy that i only had to look at them for a certain word once or twice. I genuinely thought I wouldnt be able to understand more than two words so this is… really crazy for me.
It’s an eye opener. And even tho I probably won’t get back to learning french any time soon I will get rid of that thought that I simply “failed” at french and should move on.
    Thank you for this

after several months of studying, its really exciting to be able to understand everything you both said in french. For me, the most exciting part of language learning has been graduating from understanding material meant specifically for learners to being comfortable with some material meant for native speakers. It really does feel like taking off the training wheels to a bike and being able to balance.

Robin's spanish is actually quite good, he doesn't make that many mistakes with genders and verb conjugation wich are the two things that many non native speakers struggle with, on the other hand you can see Lindi making these tipical non native mistakes but her pronunciation is quite good. Lo que me gusta especialmente es que realmente tenéis muchas cosas que decir. No es hablar por hablar y decir tonterías. Il y a trop de youtubers qui seulement parlent de conneries principalment pour surprendre les autres. Speaking other languages should be also a means of interchanging relevant information. Another thing I appreciate very much is how relaxed you feel with making mistakes or not remembering words. Nobody's perfect.
