      Joris man, my native language is Spanish, and I can tell you some of the challenges to follow a channel of a person having English as a second language is difficulties trying to understand the accent, as most of us tend to over pronounce, not the case with yours, you're perfectly understandable, you don't massacre the language using slang and yet you keep it casual and easy to follow. Keep up the good work!

      You have great English, i try making a gaming channel and its in English language but no viewers more then a minute..lol probably because i am tone deaf, meaning no high or low speech and my pronounce not that good. I might try create new video but have English subs, not sure yet. >

      I wanna learn about english. But confused and concerned about getting monetized or someone said my videos will not get monetized if i use english languange. Is that true ? I mean... does the english languange affect the monetizing process ?

    Thanks for this! I’m also Dutch and started my channel in English: definitely feels like an additional challenge. Easy to get overly self conscious about it. I always think ‘hmm that didnt come out exactly the way I hoped’. Trying to find the line between good enough and being overly critical I guess (but I agree it builds confidence once you decide to keep growing!)

    I started this travel channel with the purpose to do everything in English but was afraid if I was going on the right path.
    I have many reasons to do in English but was afraid due to having a big public that speaks Portuguese.
    I live in England and I can speak anything in English, but with a broad accent.
    One of my goals is to improve my English and reduce my accent and I reckon recording interesting videos and uploading on TH-cam is a great tool for learning.

    TH-cam recommended this video to me, perhaps they know I was contemplating starting my channel in English :D For me talking in English felt weird, but I thought it maybe sounded even worse when I played it back in edit. And my Finnish speaking audience is 5 million people. That is quite limiting for sure. I have made English subtitles and some seem to use them.

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point actually! Also, adding subtitles in your native language on TH-cam might help. It's extra work, though, and I don't know how good Google translate would do it 😉

    • @jb3d982
      @jb3d982 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JorisHermans I though about adding subtitles! But again, I'm with you on all points you mentioned. Theres so much positive in trying to speak english even if it is difficult at the beginning. We should just always remind ourselves that languages like dutch or french have a lot less visibility and therefore needs people to represent fields like yours or mine!
      Great work again I really appreciate your content. Some video ideas you put online were in the back of my head for few days so I think I will relate a lot to your channel ! Have an awesome day and keep going :)

    Hey there! I'm a native Spanish speaker, and I uploaded a video 2 years ago, unfortunately, my bachelor degree and also insecurities blocked me from keeping uploading content. It's been half a year since I finished university, and I was thinking of continuing uploading videos, I have a bachelor degree in Political Science, but I have also being involved in tech since I was 7yo because of my dad, I also have a lot of interest for mystery and horror storyies.
    Anyway, to not make this thing large, I recently took the time to analyse if I want to keep with my idea of creating content, and I was wondering whether I should upload content in English as it is my second language, or Spanish as my native, and even tho I know Spanish is the 3rd most spoken language or so, and it's a market in continuous growth, I was considering focusing the content in English in order to reach more people and improve my English skills at the same time.
    Thank you for this video, it really helped me a lot to clear up my mind.

    Awesome advice, Joris. I'm a well known speaker and author in The Netherlands and next year I'll focus more on TH-cam. I'm really in doubt if I should switch to English because my main audience speaks Dutch, but my dream is to become an international speaker about business. I have some traction on my Dutch channel (80+ organic subs p/month) and I'm afraid that I'll loose that if I switch to english on my channel.

    You are like an up and coming peter McKinnon but the advice you give is more practical and hands on. Also your accent is cool, i hear British people all day. It is nice to hear your slant on it and i would encourage any non English speaking TH-camr to give it a go.

      @@JorisHermans When i first watched your content. my initial thought was you were European but you had probably lived in the UK for a while as your English is perfect. If you asked me to place where in Europe i would have guessed at the Netherlands. So pretty close i guess... But i was surprised to hear you struggle with English as from my perspective you have got it down! You definitely have an accent, But everyone in the UK has an accent! myself i am from Birmingham so i have that peaky blinders vibe and people would probably find it harder to understand me at times than they would you! For my content i have to focus on speaking clearly and removing alot of slang.
      Have you ever heard a drunken scouser speak? (someone from Liverpool) now that is its own language! I think people in the UK are so use to hearing all sorts of people speak English. that no one should be worried about giving it a go on youtube.

    You speak English very well. I don’t live far from you and a lot of our countrymen (myself included) have a serious ‘accent’ when speaking English.
    Just a small remark, you’ve got your Union Jack wrong, unless you speak English like Shakespeare. The one you show was introduced in 1606 until 1801. The diagonal red stripes of Ireland are not included in the old one. The current Union Jack are the flags of England, Scotland and Ireland merged.

    I disagree. A lot of people will watch videos in a language they don't speak. There are channels in Korean, Japanese and Russian that have huge international audiences who use subtitles. I'm French Canadian and that is a peculiar situation. My 1st language is French but i speak English perfectly. I can't choose because we live in both languages. We speak both languages, sometimes in the same sentence. i pick the language most appropriate according to the topic of the video and i subtitle in the other language. Subtitling is a lot of work though, ugh ... but i cannot leave one language behind. That's just how we live here.

    Goede video man! Ik overweeg om een tweede TH-cam account te starten (waarop ik m'n huidige content naar het Engels vertaal). Alle content die ik online bekijk, is Engels dus m'n Engels is goed. Ik spreek alleen nooit Engels dus daar zie ik een beetje tegen op. Heb je tips over hoe jij je Engelse uitspraak hebt verbeterd? Ik ben namelijk onder de indruk van hoe goed je Engels is voor iemand waarvan het niet de moedertaal is. Alvast bedankt!

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Gewoon videos in het Engels beginnen maken. Kijkers vinden het noet erg als je met een accent spreekt zolang ze je kunnen verstaan en het is de beste manier om te verbeteren. Gewoon jezelf ff mentaal over het feit zetten dat het niet perfect zal zijn in het begin maar dat hoeft ook niet. Je bent ook altijd veel kritischer voor jezelf. Da’s menselijk. Maar gewoon doen!

      In het begin maakte ik altijd volledig uitgeschreven scripts omdat het dan nog wat moeilijker is om spontaan te spreken voor de camera. Ik las die niet letterlijk af maar dan is het makkelijker om je gedachten te “ver-Engelsen”. Hangtver natuurlijk vanaf wat soort video’s je maakt.

      @@JorisHermans Dat is inderdaad erg handig om mee te beginnen, dat verlaagd de drempel om te beginnen toch weer een beetje. Het enige andere waar ik een klein beetje tegenop zie is de hoeveelheid concurrentie. Heb jij het idee dat je daar veel last van hebt gehad of valt dat mee door de hoeveelheid vraag naar Engelse content?

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Da’s inderdaad een tweesnijdend zwaard. Minder concurrentie in het Nederlands maar ook een veel kleiner publiek. Ik denk toch dat het makkelijker is om te groeien in het Engels. Ik heb alleen maar voordelen ondervonden.
