Great video- just getting into ice fishing around Kamloops - Have a H7 G2 - going up for Koks this Sunday. Looking at the new Mega Live imaging at Tradex tomorrow for possible upgrade for open water
Have really enjoyed the 2 videos I’ve seen so far. Clear, concise explanations that are well articulated...with examples even when you point to the screen, enabling us newer Helix users to follow better and learn. Had to subscribe! Quick Q: can you get by with summer transducer or do I really need to buy the ice transducer. My model is a Helix 7x MSI GPS G3N. Thx!
I’m like you and prefer the sonar. I had a marcum showdown and it was nice to have the flasher in a vertical format, but the circle format never made sense to me. I definitely prefer the sonar view so I can see my lure action and the clear fish mark. Btw, are you for real fishing in 3 feet of water or just there for the demo? (Edit) I guess you’re catching them there lol.
So on my 7 G4 when I set the bottom range to say 40 feet it shows on the dial in increments but where it says on others 0 to 40 or what ever the depth set is for mine always show 0 to 0 any idea what I have in the set up that’s making it do this
Any idea why my helix 7 mega di g3 doesn't have ice mode? I thought maybe I needed the updated software but it looks like I'm running the latest software.
@@spiltmilt does it need to have the ice transducer recognized? Right now I have the open water transducer that I was going to use but couldn't find ice mode under sonar. Will it not show due to only having the open water transducer?
@@spiltmilt thanks. i updated to the latest software. but mine stays at 100 after a day of fishing, so I was just wondering. maybe lithium just last that long? i do have battery setting set at lithium.
The Helix 7 is a great option for powerboats. Does the Ulterra have built in Side Imaging or Down imaging? You'll need to know so you get the right head unit.
I have the helix 5 with the ice shuttle, I would like to know if I buy the Helix 7 Mega SI (for my boat as well) will the Helix 7 fit in my ice shuttle..Thank You
@@spiltmilt awww well thank you..I thought you had mention that on one of your videos but wasn't sure..Love your vids keep them coming specially with the helix in action..Thank you
@@spiltmilt I will use this unit just for ice fishing will the 5 be fine? I’d rather not spend $1000 just for ice fishing. Also I fish with my wife. Will this pick up 2 jigs at once? We use teardrop jigs for perch in about 20-40 feet of water
It will pick up both jigs but it cannot target separate. In other words if both of your jigs are at the same depth you will not be able to tell whose jig is which. The 5" should be plenty big for ice fishing.
how long does your battery last ? I´m running a helix 5 for aprox 4 hours with a 7.2 ah li-on battery on the ice :/ . I suspect something is wrong with the unit or the transducer which "drinks" so much from the battery
The Helix 5 draw about 0.5 amps per hour so it sounds to me like you've got a battery issue. Could be one of two things: 1.) You have a failed cell(s) in the battery or perhaps you are not using the correct charger. A charger for sealed lead acid batteries will not bring your battery to full capacity.
@@spiltmilt and the second ? I took the battery back to the retailer who checked the battery and the charger as well (charger came with the battery as a package) , nothing wrong with them.. He ran a 10" Garmin for about 10 hours with my battery in demo mode.. So it look´s like there is something "fishy" ;) going on with my gear
Cold will reduce the potential of even lithium batteries. Seems odd to have so much "extra" bleed off of the Helix. You could try dimming the screen as that is where most of the energy loss is.
Perfect timing! We finally have fishable ice and I will be using my Helix 7 for the first time. Thanks Tyler!
Great some lakes in eastern starting to freeze up. Ice fishing season

can you please do a video explaining how you locate where the fish are at?
I’d bonk a few of those brook trout. Nice pink meat in them.
you should do one for your lake setup for a kayak

Would you suggest this unit over a humminbird ice 55?
Nerd fisherman BTW...
Amazing content! 👏👏👏
I would because you can use it on open water plus you get GPS and lake mapping.
Thanks for the review. Does the shuttle fit in a bucket?
How can you see brush piles? Or any structure underwater?
They show up sonar if you know how to read it

All Helix units should have ice mode.

does the new update read lithium correctly? or does it still stay at 100 until it dies?
It does read lithium correctly

Hey Tyler, I have an ulterra min-kota with the built-in transducers, which humminbird minimum price would you get

What model shuttle do u have?
Thank You for your quick reply, sorry to say I have no idea what the model number is the only thing i find is 407066
Yes the 407066 is the portable base # that works with the Helix 5 & Helix 7. You should be good to go.

I would have liked to have seen the fish id modes
It just throws fish symbols on the screen and it’s not very accurate. I strongly encourage people to not use them
Great Video!! Do you use the same settings when your fishing deeper? Thanks!!
Yes because deep winter fishing is still generally 30' of less for me.
@@spiltmilt Awesome!! Thanks for the info!!
Milt what are you doing for Fish ID Sensitivity under the Sonar menu? Thanks.
I turn Fish ID off.
@@spiltmilt There's fish ID and then the sensitivity.
What model gen are you using in this video?
This is G4 MEGA SI/DI Helix 7
Do you have to reset your settings everyone you turn it on? I’m looking at getting a hummingbird for ice fishing
As long as you power off instead of just unplugging the battery it will save the settings.

@@spiltmilt Ive tried to reduce the brightness down to 5
Did you ever figure out the issue?
Is this worth buying or is it over kill for ice fishing?
If I was only ice fishing I'd run the Helix 5 or Garmin Striker 4 but I like the 7" for open water so it makes sense to use on ice as well.
