Bro I just gotta say, this and all your videos I've been watching recently has help me tremendously. For someone like myself who just turned 45 and been out of the hobby for at least 30 yrs, stopped collecting around the age of 15, this stuff is very helpful. At least with your method of the true rookie card breakdown, it gave me a more calm feeling and a somewhat better understanding of how to collect and pursue some rookie cards. I look at as a good start into the hobby, just like the RC is the start of a players career. So I do value this information your providing on this. Very much appreciated. Now the question I have is, after watching this great video about Wembanyama, how would anyone find out about a players rookie card in like the earlier years? I'm looking at a few players from the 90s in the NBA and NFL. You said how NBA hoops is the flagship card, because of the history and being the 1st release every year into the new NBA season, but how does that apply to a player from the late 90s when topps and fleer had the license for NBA as well if I'm not mistaken? How would I know who was the flagship at that time and what were the release dates of those? Would love to see a video like this on Tracy McGrady who has IMO some pretty good looking RCs and a player I loved to watch. Obviously 97-98 everyone just focuses more on Tim Duncan. Which deservingly so. But T-Mac was special. You ask a good question, so in how I do things 2006 was the dawn of a new era with the Player's Association brining regulation to manufacturers. Prior to that I still recommend using Beckett magazine to determine RCs. I do not like to re-write history, they were the go to of the hobby between 1984-2004. So I would recommend picking a copy up for the years you mentioned. Hey thanks for tuning in!

Victor, I absolutely LOVE the "stars rating". To me if its in the base set it should be considered a "rookie card" however some are GREATER than others and I would agree that the first should be considered the TRUE rookie cards but the others are lesser rookie cards but still rookie cards. Hi Jason! Yeah, so typically, the manner of distribution matters. Cards that were printed exclusively for an event like NSCC do not qualify for a true RC designation. Still, it's a great card, and I typically refer to those as Rookie Year cards. Also, technically, he had not debuted in an NBA game yet. Appreciate you tuning in! 👍

Very cool! Hello Vinny from France! I typically look at the North American sports card market. Of course athletes can have versions of other cards from other countries but I would for example refer to them as "Victor's French rookie" or Ohtani's Japanese rookie. Other markets are typically ambiguous to the North American market. Maybe things will change in the future. As far as stickers go, these historically speaking have never been considered true rookie cards. We make clear distinctions between stickers and trading cards. Most collectors prefer trading cards because that's typically what is readily available to us. Sticker market has not done very well here. I appreciate you tuning in and for your insights.

I do not. Typically, these are regional issues created for a specific event, so promos for stadium giveaways, event giveaways and the like do not qualify for a true rc designation. Still a great card to own don't get me wrong but an RY designation is more appropriate. Thanks for tuning in 👍🏼
Players Association definition of a rookie card states that the player should be on a pro level roster. Also, takes two licenses one by the league NBA and the other by the PA. Collegiate product has a collegiate license therefore my view is that it disqualifies it 👍🏽

Maybe others can give you feedback me personally do not give out this kind of advise especially since I haven't studied the checklist. This is out of Select I assume? Never heard of it, is it another tier level? Is it serial numbered? We would need a bit more info in order to really help. 👍🏼

In a previous video you said that the NBA HOOPS 277 Victor Wembanyama card and all its parallels are considered as true rookie cards (Because this is the first set that was released ). Sorry for the confusion. The first video pertaining the Hoops was made in December of 2023. The context of this video was dealing more with the two products released at that time which was Panini Draft Picks -vs- NBA Hoops. Also, every fully licensed product will feature a "true" rookie card according to my definition. The second video released in April of 2024 deals with the 9 products released up until that point. I will be releasing a third video once all products are released which the way its looking will be mid 2025! LOL! In hindsight I should of just waited until all products were released. Anyway. I did my own analysis. On the edge of the NBA hoops box there is an inscription: Look fore the first Rookie cards of the 2023 NBA Draft class! And if you look at the back of the cards, it is clear that there is a special old scool graphic on this card (This type of graphic does not appear on any other card), they clearly indicate that this is different from all the others.
Yeah, that product hadnt released yet when I made this video. But yes, Concourse would be the true RC. However, I’m assuming that they Panini stayed the course and didn't change anything.
Great Video. I personally think people are sleeping on Topps NOW and Panini Instant cards (especially rookie year cards) Limited runs of iconic moments and pictures of said iconic moments used for the card. Seems like it would have great upside in long term value over time.
I totally agree with you on your qualification of a true rookie card, the first base with no parallel. An unpopular from a 44yr old collector, the modern day parallels are just total nonsense to me. Unfortunately the hobby is crazy over it.

I personally enjoy hoops ..I am shocked how low some of the numbered cards are. My favorite of the 9 Victor RC cards excluding any parallels are: 1) Prizm 2) Hoops 3) Court Kings

If it’s a PSA 10, that is around a base Prizm Wemby worth as his market value dropped. The best ones I like a lot are from Bowman U with his auto but it’s really pricey.
If we are talking logic then the very first card printed by a company with all the licenses should be the ultimate rookie card of a player. Each brand can have their own rookie if they’re licensed but the very first one printed in your brand is it. Now if your company gets to print first before eveeyine then that very first print of that player is the ultimate rookie card. So we should have a new title on the card called URC. Ultimate Rookie. First card of the that player printed periodt by licensed company is URC
Hi Andy! I’m assuming you’re referring to 2023-24 Topps Chrome. I have an entire video giving my reasons. But it really comes down to Fanatics strong arm business tactics, not a fan of the Players Association reneging on their contract with Panini either, whole thing seems corrupt. Also, not fully licensed therefore falls a bit short for a true RC designation. Other than that I really do enjoy Topps Chrome overall.

NBA Hoops is Panini just like Prizm. The reason Prizm is considered flagship is of the scope of the design of the parallels. When it comes out has no bearing whatsoever on flagship status. They bring out Prizm Draft picks before because it’s the least value of all of their products. So you can argue that they are bringing their lowest products out first to wet out beaks. I would also argue that Select was nicer this year than Prizm with the JCPenny Curtain. And so far Photogenic is the most premium product this year by far!

NBA Hoops is Panini just like Prizm. The reason Prizm is considered flagship is of the scope of the design of the parallels. When it comes out has no bearing whatsoever on flagship status. They bring out Prizm Draft picks before because it’s the least value of all of their products. So you can argue that they are bringing their lowest products out first to wet out beaks. I would also argue that Select was nicer this year than Prizm with the JCPenny Curtain. And so far Photogenic is the most premium product this year by far!
