    So crazy how well that worked for the metal! I think it would be great for casting jewelry, custom hardware details, small dishes... ah the list goes on!

    • @777weety
      @777weety 7 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Yes! and its reosable and way less mess making it suitable for areas with limited space.

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Wouldn't work well for jewelry. You want the casting to be as smooth as possible so there's less post casting cleanup involved.
      That's one of he reasons they use investment (a really fine plaster basically) the other being that you can preheat it which helps the molten metal flow I to and pick up the fine details better.

      I wonder if you could use styrofoam inserts to hold more complex three dimensional objects? It’s a timing problem between the rate at which the styrofoam melts, the kinetic sand softening as support is lost, and the metal hardening... probably a bust idea.

    • @cherrychuckles
      @cherrychuckles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Brian Mulisano It’s not a bust idea until you prove it is (or isn’t) Try it and see! :)

    I feel like you could use this in so many ways, you could essentially create any shape you need for any given project, might need stronger metals though? Table legs could be cool.

  • @MonolithTyriss
    @MonolithTyriss 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That worked so well, now it makes me curious how far up the list of molten metals you could cast in this fashion. The hotter that sand can withstand, the more and more things you can cast rather cheaply. Really hope to see more experimenting with this idea! Also, perhaps some form of release-spray when you do the concrete? Maybe that'd make the clean up of the sand on it easier?

  • @jkharwood1973
    @jkharwood1973 7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    You could cast your own ring. Or by hand, press a certain size hole saw into the sand and carefully remove to form the mold. Pour in the melted alloy. Then, using the same hole saw cut a similar depth hole into a wood project or other surface. Place round alloy relief in the hole. Could be kind of a cool accent to a furniture or decoration piece...

    Hi Ben, that’s great result. I understood that polymers were added to the sand. Did indeed expect that the molten metal would damage the sand. That it’s working is really cool. How about making a coat rack with hooks made from metal agains a dark hardwood board for contrast?

    Really cool experiment! It is always fun to find a new (and inexpensive) way to mold things. I have some bars of Bismuth I bought without any particular plans, figuring inspiration would strike at some point. Maybe this would be a good application for them, hmmm.....
    It makes sense that grains of sand would be absorbed into the concrete mix. Knowing that, it would be fun to use this characteristic intentionally with different combinations of concrete pigment and colored kinetic sand.

  • @SantiagoValeroVernet
    @SantiagoValeroVernet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I think you might be able to get more sand off the skull if you get the rest of the sand to look like 0:52 and press the skull onto it. I believe the little sand left that is in the skull will be more likely to stick back to the pack of sand. Let me know how it turns out, good luck!

  • @roncon3174
    @roncon3174 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the concrete absorbed moisture from the kinetic sand, and in so doing a color transfer took place.

    You could make pebble-texture concrete floor tiles for wet areas. Make square, rectangular, or hexagonal depressions in the sand. Gently press pebbles in the bottom of depressions (that will become the top of the tiles). Fill with concrete. When installing the floor tiles, let grout cover the concrete in the spaces between pebbles, and it would look like you set each one in the floor individually.

    This is so kewl! I think the metal one came out amazing. You should try to make "Homemade/diy" kinetic sand, and see if that works "as good". Then the cost may be even LESS to make "one time" molds, that you can always "remake" again anytime you want with the negative. Also, being able to make metal ones cheap, you could use the hunk of metal to create a lasting mold with another medium. So kewl. Glad to have clicked. :)

    So satisfying to see it come out of the sand

    You are brilliant 👏🏾 Thank you showing us these experiments, I’m excited to try some of my own.

    Woah! :0 So cool! I thought the kinetic sand would catch on fire also, and I was very surprised when it didn't.

    You should make door and drawer handles. Or you could make buttons or various embellishments for concrete nic nacs or other projects.

    First I would use this in scale modeling for recreate model parts! Having worked in a foundry indeed the sand is what is used for metal. Don't forget to use safety equipment when working with molten metal!

    3D print and Iphone support and cast it using your technique! (great idea to use quick sand btw)

    I feel like this method would work awesomely for cosplay stuff! If you're interested in it, you should try playing around with that idea, like, making the design for something for a costume in the sand and then casting it to see how well it works and with which materials

    I love the look of the sand on the concrete, if you got some other colors you could get really fun with it!

    Great experiment! Maybe you could cast something in your tin alloy and then have it electroplated or chromed for some household decor thing like coasters, planter or soap dish?

    Do you think you could cast clear resin in this? Or even regular resin?

  • @KevinBlank
    @KevinBlank 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would think if you try and cast larger items, you would want a wood form to hold the sand in place. Also, I would experiment with some different types of mold release to see if that helps the sand sticking issue. (although the mold release might limit how many times you could use the sand)

    It works. You can also mix silly putty with sand to make that type of sand.
    Use this because mixing clay with sand is a hard task.

    Curious how well that would work with pewter. That's used quite a lot for casting small items and that would probably be a good use for that ...
