Excellent vlog! My wife and I vacationed in Laughlin for years, and enjoyed it very much. I was just in Bullhead City in March for a few days, it was as I remembered so fondly.
Incredible that this tiny little river system is tapped to do so much. It's amazed me all of my life, and I'm frankly surprised that it's held up this long.
Honest to God... I used to go camping at Bullhead City when it was a trailer park...with one General Store ...they had a huge bug zapper that would fry knats all night long....
Anybody who is familiar with the area knows that the water is that low every morning. It will rise several feet by the end of the day. You leave your boat in knee deep water at sunset it will be 50 feet from the water by sunrise.
Thanks for sharing. My neighbors were disappointed a few weeks ago when they went out to go fishing and said the river was gone. Is there a schedule one can see to know when they're going to do these ahead of time?
There is, let me see if I can dig it up. Usually the Bullhead City Instagram is a good source of this information though. They post about this stuff regularly so you can mark it up in your calendar. Next one is August 16.
You can get the Colorado River water operations schedule directly from the source. here" www.usbr.gov/lc/riverops.html. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation operates the dams and posts updates daily. Look for Davis Dam releases in the report and remember anything below two units (two of the dam's electricity-generating turbines running, releasing around 10,000 CFS total) means the river is quite low and launch ramps may be unusable. Standard practice is the river is low from around 8 p.m. until 11 a.m., with highest water levels in the afternoon when electricity needs are the highest.

The HEADWATERS of the Colorado (in Colorado, Wyoming and high New Mexico) are getting almost normal rainfall. Arizona, Nevada and Utah, places with extremely hot summers, are getting 6 inches instead of 9 inches. Zero of the nine inches made it to the Colorado. The same amount of the 6 inches gets there.
Yep, it's a pest control method not a water shortage issue. It's to kill off an invasive larva that shows up on the rocks along the shore line and on the bottom side of boat docks and other similar areas of the river.
I don't think the nighttime low flow is due to the bug abatement. they do that in the sun. The low flow at night is generally every night I have ever been there, the river is super low ealry in the morning and withing an hour or two is high again. I think it is because of a reduced need for power generation at night ( air conditioners running less), I never thought the nightly low flow was bug abatement.
We used to take the boat they ran across the river to the 2 casinos they had built there. Looks like a lot more people living there than back then. Gets hot enough there to fry an egg literally on the sidewalk. 🤷🏼♀️
I lived in the Bullhead City area for 27 years. The water level fluctuates throughout the day, but this is incredibly low for summer. During holidays, the river is crammed with boats, jet skis, and wave-runners many operated by folks who are intoxicated. It’s downright dangerous. Clearly, this footage was taken during a weekday. If this river becomes a trickle, the western border of AZ, the cities of Bullhead, Lake Havasu City, Parker, and Yuma will all but die. Play is the major work in Laughlin/Bullhead. While it may be growing now, who wants to live where summer temps periodically exceed 120, or 112+ regularly May through September, if there isn’t water in which to cool off? Brutally hot area running out of water, yet they continue building homes throughout AZ and southern NV.
