How to formulate an impressive answer to "Why Should We Hire You?" in a Job Interview

- 🤨 You might be wondering “what the heck are soft and hard skills?”
Soft skills = personal qualities that are applicable to any job
Hard skills = learned skills that are specific to one job or industry
Soft skills are non-technical, more interpersonal skills, examples:
* Organization
* Time management
* Resourcefulness
* Teamwork
* Problem solving
* Patience
* Leadership
* Communication
* Critical thinking
* Etc.
Hard skills are technical skills that must be learned, examples:
* POS systems
* CSS/HTML
* Copywriting
* Bartending
* Adobe Illustrator
* Microsoft Excel
* Video Editing
* UX/UI design
* Asana
* SEO
* Etc.
There are some skills that fall into both categories like “project management” or “time management” as these can refer to a personal quality or a specific software setup. So don’t over think it, but definitely be sure to include a balance of hard + soft skills when answering this question.

I'm a fast learner, never heard that one before 🙄
To all job applicants: if you bring a skill to the table like fluency in more than one language (or even just being conversational in it) KNOW YOUR WORTH. Do not settle for minimum wage with a skill like this. Depending on factors like where you're working (eg, call center, customer service in an area with many customers who speak that language) and the rest of your skill set, you can negotiate up to 20 percent more per hour than if you didn't speak another language. Never bring more to the table for free.
Yeah that doesnt count for people in europe 😂 we learn 3 extra languages in school
@@loesiechan Yeah but correct me if I'm wrong, minimum wage is actually livable in most of Europe lol 😂 Plus you get actual benefits by default, like paid vacation, maternity/paternity leave, and of course your health insurance isn't tied to your employer. Us US folk are starting on the back foot lol
@@Snuzzledyou can become a translator but how does knowing a language qualify you above a minimum wage
@@rebjr6615 If the company has a client or customer who only speaks another language, and you speak that language, it saves them having to hire a third party translator. Let's say I apply to work at Chipotle. I have a Deaf customer come in who wants to order. I know ASL, now the customer has a better experience instead of having to write everything down. They're probably going to come back to that Chipotle every time. They're probably going to tell their Deaf friends. That's beneficial for Chipotle. I'm bringing more value to my position than someone who can't sign. Therefore, I ought to be paid more for the extra value I provide.
@@SnuzzledMy European country doesn't have a legal minimum wage...
I appreciate that she focuses on all types of jobs including minimum wage like this video instead of only focusing on high-level stuff like a lot of other channels do
"So always be aware of your body language and tone"
*Autism has left the chat*
You can still be self aware.
It's definitely much more of a challenge, but it can be worth memorizing a certain body language routine or script for interviews. If possible, have a neurotypical friend with some positive interview experience (better yet, hiring experience) help you out.
We shouldn't have to perform like this, of course, and hopefully one day we won't have to... still, it's a useful survival skill for our largely neurodivergent-unfriendly world.
@@sabias3932 I literally cannot control my tone. I can’t help it. Either I have a flat effect which is off putting or I have to exaggerate which is off putting. I have no middle. I’ve tried. For 30 years.
Yeah same, as soon as I heard body language and tone I knew I was fucked
Just do your best. Obviously you might slip up a little bit but if you’re relatively high functioning ( I know that’s not the new term but I don’t know what it is so someone please correct me respectfully) you should be able to still somewhat be self aware enough to see your body language and use it. Also you should know the difference between kind professional tone and more casual tone
Or alternatively, when they're desperately short on staff, just say: "i have two feet and a heartbeat, now give me the apron"
I love how you ended that like they already hired you.
"I love Chipotle. When can I start?"
I know this is an example but fast food jobs really shouldn’t be asking the hard questions. More just “can you work weekends and holidays”
I was a fast food manager for twenty years.
I looked for flexibility. An ability to think quickly and adapt and thick skin.
Id hire anybody without experience that had 2 of the three. I hired a lot of first job kids. I would tell them the soft skills that they learn here will help them thru their whole lives. Learning how to deal with people and diffuse situations is a great skill to have.
One of my friends responded to this question with "because I'm cool" and got the job
what is the work your friend was hired for? :)
@@Julie_Lovely Wendies I think?
😂😂
I have been watching your videos for a bit now and your tips of another video help me negotiate a $1.50/hr raise so I will be making more than I was in my previous job with the total compensation. Thank you so much for all your help and tips I will continue to watch.
congrats dude! Good for u
Normalise this response: “because I jeed money to put food on the table”
well ur not gonna get hired, thats for sure
I would just reply with, “i guess let me answer your question with a question. Based on our conversation, my resume, and my experience, is there anything preventing you from hiring me that I can address?”. Or ask “what about my resume/application cause you to invite me in for an interview?” Or “what do you like about my background/experience?” Or start asking questions about thejob, typical day, what the manager’s goals are, or what a great year for them looks like or What problems the company is having or why the position is open in the first place etc. you are the solution to their problems, not a “nice to have” for the company.
In sales you should be always asking questions. This is the same as the “sell me this pen” situation. You start asking questions like “how long have you been in the market for a pen”. Don’t fall into HR or the manager’s traps.
Facts! Works every time!!
Definitely be prepared to ask questions, I agree with that part.
I think for any service industry position you just need to be confident and polite. Don't worry too much they need you more than you need them. If you show up on time and are somewhat pleasant, you'll be a key carrier in a year and a manager in 5.
Lmfao I love the look on their face when trying to tell me about body language and tone. It changes fast when I mention I'm autistic and cant help those things.
Same 😭
That’s why people should stop bringing that stuff up
@@quirkyblackenby In some situations it has to be brought up if it effects your work life. People with different circumstances deserve jobs and they may need to bring up personal things to see if that work place is accepting and willing to help you get a position that works for you.
@@kiscrazyreptiles they don’t get to be willing or unwilling to accept it. That’s literally discrimination.
@@quirkyblackenby and yet you stating you're a quirky black NB is ok vs autism
I hate these questions.
You posted a job, and I'm a worker who can look you straight in the eye, pass a background check, and show up on time. Match made in heaven!
I really love that you use examples from all types of industries, positions, and pay. I’ve seen you talk about some of the lowest to highest paying jobs, designer to service industry, independent contractor to manager to employee.
Also I feel like often growing up what missed for some people in employee interviews are the subtle things you talk about. The main reason I think I interview well is because I know how to show them what I want while also being honest but I could never give clear advice to friends on how to do this. You explain these subtle things so well! In a way that helps people entering a job at any level and in any industry. I appreciate what you’re doing so much.
"to be completely honest, you propably shouldn't"
I could never stand to do food service jobs again, but I do really miss the connection to my community that those jobs had. I miss seeing my neighbors and old teachers and knowing my work had a direct effect on them.
If there was a super-double-like button, I would press that. Fantastic advice for any role. Erin is the best
She teaching us more than school lmao
I'm autistic, so basically I have a persona I use at work, a very cultivated mask to make sure I'm valuable and paid well... And you shouldn't promise what you don't have. And since I'm autistic, I don't have the skills that are valuable to be an office drone. So I pretend. I hide. I take breaks. And once a week, I do something without asking that's important and driven before hiding some more.
If you aren't a fast learner, say something about how you are persistent worker and you like to make sure you're doing the best job with the least amount of errors.
I HATE customer service. 10 years in customer service anyway. I hate working with people. Always on a team. I am not passionate about my work, I just need money to survive. So a carefully cultivated mask that I give at work is almost 100% the opposite of who I am in real life...
I'm so fucking tired.
I am agree that you just have to create a personality which meets all the requirements needed on this job and act well. I am working a customer service too but I am introvert and actually hate it. But I think staying in the role for so long kinda ruining you from the inside. I beieve that in this life you can find your passion, something you can do everyday with a joy. I know you and I worth a meaningful life without need of doing the things you don`t like. Believe in yourself, you can achieve much more than you think !! Try to find something you passionate about. This life is too short to spend it to make others rich. I wish you happiness and succes on a field which suits you. Believe in yourself dear, know your worth!
I love how she uses several job levels for her examples, not just entry level or experienced job levels. Makes it relatable to everyone!
Absolutely. I know many people who love serving customers fast food. Interviews are such bs 😅
Brilliant and concise. I think you should hire me because I am prepared, I'm ready to hit the ground running! Youre a star!
Actually solid advice!
Really should specify this advice is for entry level high school jobs. The trait most employers look for during an interview is competency. If you’re answering questions with verbal pauses (umm, ahh, well, etc) you will more than likely not be selected.
Nah buddy. You need both.
I just lost my fucking dream job at euroclear because the bitch thought I didn't really convince her why I want to work for euroclear, even though my skills are impressive she's going to pass.
What? What entry level job is any high schooler taking lol this is for service industry jobs, which aren’t just high schoolers 🤨
No such thing as "high school jobs". My last couple years in high school, no one my age could find work because the laid-off adults had taken all the entry-level positions. Class of '10, babyyy. 🫠
This makes no sense
no… no she shouldnt
I was asked this question and I said you should hire me because you need an employee to fill a role that I have been doing for company A for the last 28 years. If they did not go out of business I would still be there. Im loyal,trustworthy and dependable.
I was confidant thru out the whole interview. I demonstrated my knowledge of the job and answered all of their questions. I asked a few of my own at the end and all in all I thought the interview went well. I asked what the next steps in the process were and they told me they had a few more interviews and second interviews would be by email invitation in about 2 weeks.
6 weeks later and no email positive or negative. Ghosted again.
I'm guessing that they didn't want to pay you for your 28 years of experience. Sucks.
Every time I’ve ever said “I’m a fast learner” at an interview, they literally do not care.
OMG this is not how you get hired at Chipotle LOL
I actually got hired at a Chipotle and turned down the job because something better came along lol
I basically went into the interview like "I've worked with customers, I've gotten open schedule"
And I was hired on the spot.
Love these answers, thanks for a great video.
I hate this question, like ones they asked me,and I told I know I can do a great Job and I have the qualifications, and they still asked why they need to choose me and not someone else.
Why should we hire you?
"Are you say Pan, or Pand?"
😂
How do you talk about your skills and career accomplishments without coming off as being too self-absorbed/bragging? Thank you for all your help!!
Here are those tiktok videos where they answer this question with: " Because you have a vacancy, duh! But more importantly, why do you have that? What happened to the last person? Why did s/he leave? What is wrong with this firm? Etc ..."
Smart as this may seem, i would never hire such a person, no matter how desperate i am to hire smb. This person will be horrible to work with, always with an attitude and questioning everything decision i take.
Your answer is so much better
I think it's fair to ask why a position is open, but it has to be done tactfully and respectfully. I actually landed a job after I asked this very question during the interview.
Body language: irrelevant
Tone: irrelevant
What you actually say: relevant
I used this word for word and the hospital director asked me how Chipotle and fast food is relevant to me applying to be an anesthesiologist.
This is really helpful
Everybody is a hard worker and fast learner. Make it memorable
"Why should we hire you?"
"Cause you're hiring? You need someone to fill the position. Duh."
"Yeah. We will call you up. Thank you for your time."
*never heard back from the company* Asks, "What did I do wrong?"
Because I will provide more value to the company than I will take in wages, which will lead to further success for both you and me. (give details for your specific job too if you can, but even just knowing that your purpose is specifically to make them more money than you cost is a good start)
My go to answer: "I work so hard, I forget to cash my paychecks"
Why? Because you’re hiring! 😂😂😂
So why should we hire you?
Me: cuz I want money?
Why should i work here?
Was the best answer 😂
So I have to recite a whole ass essay to answer the dumbest questions and I have to go learn Spanish.
Got it.
Because I need to earn money that I can pay my monthly invoices...
This is demeaning. I dont want to live in a world where people have to have a fake-emotions competition to flip burgers for survival
then develop good skills and find a better job that suits you and what you want your purpose in this world to be 🤷♂️
This level of effort for a job at Chipotle? Ew. I agree that the other answers were bad, but personally your answer comes off to me as being way too serious for the level of job. Sticking to just mentioning your soft skills, with a professional and confident demeanor would be perfect imo. Sometimes less is more.
I'll admit that I've never been a hiring manager though so maybe I'm wrong 🤷🏼♀️
it was just an example LOL 😭 pretty sure she works as a freelance video editor, so this attitude and this much effort put into her answer checks out.
You tell me is krazy😂
We just check for a pulse.
It should be more like why should I want to work for you?????
You actually _should_ ask that question at the end of the interview. It shows genuine interest and implies you're not so desperate you'll take the job no matter what. The answer will hopefully provide you with a lot of important and useful info too, of course.
"why should we hire you?"
you need help and I need money and can do what you require. that's how this exchange works.
If anyone is curious why America collapsed, it was right around the time we decided that content didn't matter.
Hello erin, please I am a student looking to apply for a job from Nigeria.... what if I am asked, "how do you intend to combine academic work and that of this company's work? how do I give a suitable answer
Why should we hire you . Because you're hiring.
"Because your sign out front has said 'We're hiring!' for the last two years and you're clearly desperate for workers." Lol 😂😂
Way 2: Say cuz your hiring
Great now I want chipotle😂
acting like speaking spanish is relevant to working at chipotle is too funny my jaw dropped
It could be relevant to any fast food job if she lives in an area where a lot of customers might speak Spanish. But it is still funny the way she said it 😂
Its super important in the south west usa
Didn't even occur to me that could be why she mentioned Spanish-speaking skills, lol. I suppose it could be useful for pronouncing menu items (Idk though, I've never been to Chipotle), but I assumed she brought it up because it's a public-facing job and much of the public speaks Spanish in the US.
If you live in an area with a lot of Spanish speakers or people of a particular culture, they're likely going to be your customers or coworkers especially in food service, so I can see it actually bearing relevance
But it is funny because chipotle is just kind of a meme 😂
Does anyone have any interview tips for someone who is deaf and wants to work in the fast food industry. I can't interact with customers and I can't be in an extremely hot kitchen, but I like cleaning and I can hyper focus for hours at a time if left uninterrupted. I've been unemployed for a year cuz no one wants to hire a weird deaf girl who can't speak with customers
You tell me lol
.How about a down to earth truthful answer. You should hire men because you need warm bodies to do the stuff you cant or don't want to do yourself. Nuff Said!
Here's a better tip.
Work for yourself so you never need to be someone's bitch. Lol
What a stupid mentality.
I wish you used a different example
You should hire me because literally no one wants to work here! That's why you have a job ad posted. Now you tell me why I should want to work here over your competitor?
Ask yo be compensated for your second language or just don’t use it at work.
🤦♀️ And I thought you were actually going to say something that would actually be helpful. I hate these stupid questions, jumping through hoops and mind games. Do you want that position filled or not? My qualifications should matter-not my “body language,” how firm my handshake is, or any other irrelevant nonsense. Then these same people have the gall to say that “no one wants to work.”
I’m sure that you’re very qualified. However, so are the rest of the people applying for the job. Body language is proven to psychologically impact how people think of you, so it is indeed an important part of an interview.
I'm just tired of this capitalist idea that it's some kind of privilege to work for a company that doesn't care about you. Companies acting as if their entire existence isn't based on the labor of their "lowest" employees is nauseating.
If you find a good company with amazing benefits, sure, they have the right to more strictly vet who they hire (and allow to take advantage of those benefits).
But a fast food or retail place asking "why should we hire you?" is just beyond laughable. They literally cannot be taken seriously. I would just promptly leave the interview.
But the issue is, there are probably about 10-15 other people out there with the exact same qualifications and skills you have, applying for the same job as you. So you need to stand out and be remembered. And you do that by making a good impression on the interviewer through your body language and your attitude.
@@idek7438 I’m trying to work, not make friends or date. Spare me that touchy-feely crap.
You just sound overqualified for fast food 😅
*Why should we hire you?*
Because you're hiring? Put me in, Coach, I'm ready to play.
This is the only acceptable answer xD
I hate job interviews so freaking much
Didn't get the job at Chipotle
warum sagt sie das was ich auf den Tisch bringe?
aaahhhh Norwegerin die mir helfen soll, wenn ich zum nächsten Vorstellungsgespräch gehen soll
"What I put on the table," is kinda like presenting an open offer for discussion, or maybe what you bring to the table like skill set, attitude, or the like. Hope this helps :)
@@NonAvailableUsernamee thank you for your answer. I have none of these things. And I mean, the food earlier was so greasy 🧈and huge that I just wanted to eat up and walk away. I just think fake acting situations at the table suck and don't show who I really am at all. Because then I don't show who I really am and how I eat properly, cleanly and sensibly, I just act🤷🏼♀️like the other actors. Hope this helps :)
@@NonAvailableUsernamee I also don't have to show my boobs to everyone at the table like other actors do. I know that I can bring good manners to the table, enjoy my food calmly and slowly, and have other skills. But I will certainly not share this with liars and actors at the table. I know my worth and I don't need anything like that. Hope this helps too :)
not quite how it works in the real world sadly
How does it work in the real world?
Yeah, I'll make sure to put in this much effort for minimum wage.
So we can fire u

You give bad advice. Your advice is subjective most of the time.
Oh crap, she is going to be a bad employee, she thinks she alteady knows everything.
*Advice For Men* : pull out your junk, the interviewer will know what this means and will also pull out their junk. The two of you will then see who has the most "coinpurse" skin in a texas stretch-off. Winner takes all.
This has worked for 6 out of my 8 job interviews.
For Women: whatever this lady said, i couldn't stand her voice so i didn't watch.

I'm sorry but if someone comes in with a prepared 3 step answer....I am not hiring you. Just gonna piss off the other team members and be a constant "um actually...."
So what is the response that YOU want when you stupid mofos ask stupid questions?
But I don’t have skills
You speak English, for one thing. That's a skill not everyone looking for a job has.
