    Thanks for the clarification Tim. So the chances are that the volume indicator on my charts does not represent the true amount of shares being traded especially if it is one of the more liquid issues.

      Dark pool trading is included in daily volume. Just at the end of the day after market closes.

    Have a question on this video - Tims video on "What is an Exchange" mentioned that one of the advantage of an exchange is that it provides anonymity. Seems like the major incentives why a dark pool is popular is because it also provides anonymity. If such benefit was already provided by an exchange why would someone go to a dark pool??? Seems like i am missing a concept somewhere here.

    Another good presentation Tim, thanks. This is very disappointing for a retail trader/investor like myself who relies on technical analysis and in particular on volume of any particular stock being analysed. A couple of questions if I may
    1) You said at the beginning that these trades go through the exchange but a the end said that they do not, which is it please?
    2) Why do they not just use iceberg orders?
    Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Ok so the reply is a bit fiddly. The original trades don't happen on exchange but if they are in an exchange-listed security they have to be trade reported to the exchange after a deal is done which then delays publication by the exchange to the rest of the market (by a matter of days in some cases). Iceberg orders are only available on some exchanges (London) where electronic dealing predominates (it still doesn't in New York). But even in London the use of icebergs is optional. Tim.

    Question, when the hedge funds need to cover their shorts, can they seek institutions willing to sell to them without going to the public exchange first? Basically, I fear all of the apes in AMC will hold out, but the institutions in the dark pool has first dibs.

    Can you buy assets that aren't denominated in rupees? This would be less speculative than buying gold I believe and protect you from depreciating local currency, gold exposes you to massive supply shocks and commodity markets - cyprus banks sold billions of dollars in gold - investors around the world are running out of copper, oil, precious metals and other commodities - you are participating in this volatile market with gold, it's not a safe haven, purely spec play imho.

    food inflation 15% and gov reported inflation 8-10% each quarter here in India...
    fuel prices doubles in 4 years. so gold as an investment vehicle is very relevant at least in INDIA as speculative $s flood emerging markets.. our rupee was already devalued in 1991 IMF had us ship gold for a loan . so there is no one size fits all investment strategy for whole world... seeing what they did to deposits in Cyprus, even more reasons to worry .. $ is inflating bubbles n
    "with gold comes power"....

  • @eyesopencam
    @eyesopencam 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It could be years before reflation sets in. Years. Possibly many years. Nobody knows. Buying gold is a highly speculative investment strategy.. you are far more likely to make money investing in productive assets that generate surplus returns over time - good companies - even if those assets are dollar denominated. If you think you can guess where interest rates are going, by all means use gold to hedge, as insurance, not an investment in and of itself. Seriously!

    so the basic argument for dark pools is, we the rich don't want the market, the invisible hand, the supply and demand, to work as it should, as it will affect our transaction, costing us to lose money.
    yeah that sounds like you're arguing you don't want capitalism to function properly, as it doesn't suit you.
    if that's the case, may I recommend socialism if we are abandoning capitalism.

    i hear this perspective from western media..but i am not sure who is selling here no one is selling in India, the jewe stores are packed as people see this drop as huge buying opportunity and buy up every thing from coins to bars... its was illegal for us to own bars and coin between 1963-1991 due to deficits...people here see inflation day in day out so they seem to know why gold! ... gold outperformed our stock markets hands down last 12 years... i like real estate but its at bubble levels...
