@@estusflask982 Screensavers have been on every version of Windows. They are even on Windows 11. I never questioned why they are there. I assume it's to make using the computer more interesting. Many people including myself stare for hours at the screensavers. A lot of the things that are on Windows such as the Windows 7 start menus and screensavers are on Linux. Because they want to make users coming from Windows to Linux feel more at home. It seems to work well as many Windows users are now turning to Linux because Windows 11 is so horrible.
Thanks, Andrea. I don't usually get carried away with this, and just use sudo systemctl suspend . The biggest bugger I have with Linux is getting it to hibernate. It can be done, but someone migrating from Windows wouldn't like it.

I was surprised to find the Maze and several other screensavers from Windows on XScreensaver. They were on Windows 95 right through to Windows XP. The Bubble 3D one is very much like the Bubbles screensaver on Windows 7 that is still in Windows 11. I think that someone has ported them from Windows to Linux. Unless they were on Linux first. The Star Wars one is a copy of Starfield Simulation which was on all versions of Windows since 3.0. On Windows XP it was just called Starfield. The text on the Linux version is something they added. Maybe to make it slightly different from the Windows one. I prefer without the text but there doesn't seem to be any way to disable it.
No I don't like dark mode. The problem is also it makes all of your apps including your text editor and folder background dark as well. I don't mind a pale pink or pale color background like pale green or pale blue but not a black background.That's just horrible. Light backgrounds are better. On Windows XP and 7 there was the option to customise the desktop theme by changing the folder color and control panel background color to whatever color you want. You could change the background color in Windows Explorer in the settings which made everything Pink or Lemon or whatever color you wanted it to be. But I don't think they have that option on Linux. I think it's either dark theme with the black background or light theme with white folder and apps background. The one desktop environment that comes close to what we had on Windows 7 is Mate. Which lets you change the folder backgrounds in Caja the file manager. The other desktops I use which are Gnome and KDE don't have this. Only Mate does as far as I know.
There are not many other screensaver programs on Linux. There is also the Mate and Xfce4 screensaver but they only work on those desktops. Debian for some reason has removed the Xfce4 screensaver from it's packages. I don't know why that is. I think it's still on Ubuntu. Because I had that screensaver on Linux Mint when I was using the Xfce desktop. But XScreensaver is the main one.
@tracer553 Yes that's right. The screensavers don't work on Wayland. Gnome has a Wayland session and they don't work on there. So you have to log into the X Session. But I didn't know Xfce is switching to Wayland. I read that Debian removed the Xfce4 Screensaver because it had some bugs.
I know Linux Mint has some screensavers, so does Linux Lite. I don't find screensavers necessary these days as most monitors don't get burn in anymore, and I always turn mine off when I am not using it.

You mean text editor? I like Xed because it looks a lot like the Windows Notepad. But on Debian I used Gedit or Pluma if I am on Mate desktop. KWrite and Mousepad are also other good options. You can install Xed on Debian and Ubuntu by downloading it from the Linux Mint packages website. You only need to install one extra file but both are Deb files so can be installed using Gdebi. As Xed is an XApp it is only included on Linux Mint though Debian and Ubuntu does have a few other XApps. But Xreader and Pix don't work on Debian or Ubuntu. they don't install as they have a lot of other dependencies but Xed does. If using Gedit or the other text editors you can disable the toolbars to make it look like Xed. They all work the same and they have other themes as well.

They are still in Windows 11 but that is not a very good operating system. Windows is not as it used to be. That's why I use Linux now. We have most of the features that we had in Windows 7.

Winamp doesn't work on Linux. It's only for Windows but Winamp is discontinued now.

hibernation is one of a few reasons i cant move to linux, for some reason if i let linux hibernate, the screen never turns on again

dark mode sometimes make difficult to watch the lines, the edges, the limits, etc, etc, clear mode it's more practical and clean and clear

The original purpose of screensavers was to prevent phosphor burn-in on CRT or plasma computer monitors
You can still have burn-in nowadays with OLED screen. Do depending your screen technology it can still be super important to have one

Have you added the autostart file for XScreensaver to run at start up? If you don't do that it won't run unless you start it manually.
