  • Great basic old school shortwave radio from XHDATA. I was impressed with the larger 2 models from these guys and was just as happy to work with this one.

Just a couple of comments to add to this review.
This is NOT an analog radio - it has a digital (DSP) tuner.
It uses an analog style tuning mechanism.
Also note that polarity of the 5v DC voltage input is reversed. The center pole contact is negative ( - ).
The 5v input is odd when you consider that the radio is powered by 3v via two 1.5v AA batteries in series.
The radio reception is incredible for the price.
In technical reviews of this radio that I have watched it has been stated that AM (MW) reception bandwidth is based on 9Khz (EU) vs 10khz (US), but I question that in terms of its impact on performance in my experience regularly using the D-219.
I have this radio side-by-side with my TECSUN PL-330 which has a DSP tuner w/ a digital display & controls. For the bands that it supports, the reception of the XHDATA D-219 is largely comparable to my PL-330 during causal listening in the NYC/NJ area.
Thank you for the review Eric, as always very enjoyable and informative :-)

@@shawnpatrick1877 Hi Shawn, I also read about this DSP chip incrementing in 1kHz steps as well within another technical review.
Like you I don't seem to have a problem locking onto local AM/MV stations in my area with my D-219 as compared to my DSP TECSUN PL-330 which is set to 10kHz.
Doing testing with the PL-330 which uses a digital display & tuner - when set to 9kHz - I DO miss stations on that radio when scanning. Yet when I manually enter a specific frequency bypassed by the scan (in 9kHz) the PL-330 locks onto that station without a problem.
Having a manual / analog display and tuner - and no digital search - I cannot have this issue with my D-219
On it using a 9k vs 10kHz bandwidth, a gentleman whose review I was quoting said that he had confirmed that this radio was set for 9kHz with the manufacturer XHDATA.
I still am really impressed by and am very happy with my XHDATA D-219!

I avoid radios with dsp chips and prefer simple like Tecsun/Kaito wrx911- Check it out! The reasn I avoid dsp is they mUTE between stations and have very harsh audio.

For less than $10 on Amazon, I could not resist buying this. My older Radio Shack AM/FM pocket radio is pretty nice and, well- pocketable. But it’s not the most sensitive.
The D-219 is a much, much better performer on both AM and FM, and it also adds SW. Not only that, but it actually can get SW signals using the whip antenna and inside my house. Wow! An amazing value. Oh, and it’s still pocketable, just a little bit larger than my old radio.

Definitely a great little radio if you don't mind not having FM-Stereo via headphone output. What i like a lot about it is that for a DSP based radio it still feels very analog in use. The silent pauses between each step, are very very short which makes tuning this to a station super easy and almost as good as with an analog tuner. Something i haven't really seen like that with most DSP based radios. Tuning dials and volume are also super smooth and it's thankfully no digital stepping for volume change but an actual smooth & stepless change of your volume levels. Something i with the Tecsun PL-398 had as well. The D-219 really feels like the kind of radio you can take with you anywhere as the ONLY radio you don't have to worry too much about possibly damaging it. So it can be really a daily beater radio. With a USB to AC cable you can even run this thing via a Powerbank or USB port of your PC and on the go you just use affordable widely available AA batteries or rechargeables. I also love that it cover a HUGE range of frequencies and Meter-Bands on Shortwave. Yeah, definitely a great starter radio or backup radio for emergencies.

As mentioned already, it's a digital signal processing radio with an analog display. Hence the chopped sound when browsing the bands. Also make sure to order the US version if you live there, that has the US standard 10 kHz stepping in the MW band. Not an issue on an analog radio, but on this one it is.
It's a really great radio with an unbeatable performance/price ratio. However it's quite sensitive to FM transmitters close and more generally RF interference that cause it to overload and become almost deaf.
More suitable to people living outside of dense urban areas.

I have this. It's not bad. For shortwave it works better at night, and I use a small alligator clip and ordinary electrical wire as an extended antenna. It works! The "4" and "5" has the most shortwave stations. Shortwave is distorted daytime due to the sun's UV which interferes with signals. I heard stations from Japan, Russia, and other countries I have no clue. I also got the international time station. Another station was playing Chopin music!
