It's hilarious to see that people are surprised to know that Rock Newman had predominately European ancestry. He doesn't even look remotely black. However he is an ally and some of ya'll need to recognize that.
I wouldn't say ally, he's black. And I don't mean that in a skin classification sense, but in a cultural sense. The man sees the world as a black man, not a white man.
Traveling Guy In old USA laws he ( and everyone with that high percentage black African DNA ) would have been registered as black if his great grand parents and parents had been honest to the government. This a very interesting program. I found this lady commentator on Sis Circle she was explaining DNA and tribes. But now I'm confident and proud of my ancestry. I'm 68 percent black 28 percent European. My dad is dark my mom is lighter than Mr Newman. I've dark blue eyes. My DNA was shocking and exciting. Thank you.
Thank you Rock Newman for very good questions. I like these Geneticists so much. I have been watching Dr. Gina the whole day today. I am an African watching at home in Kenya. I wish they can take some tests here in Africa. We are also quite diverse like African Americans. I don't think there is one African who can say they purely belong to only one particular tribe because our Ancestors really migrated and inter-married within the continent. Bottom line...the whole world is one big family, no one is pure. This is God's good intention to kill discrimination.
The grandfather wants to forget, what the grandson wants to remember. Many of us don't know our genealogical ancestors. It's super hard finding records prior to 1870 census.
Umm That is a NO BRAINER !!! Sub Saharan is a geographical location referring to those African Territories / Nations that are located beneath the Sahara Desert, which is the desert found mainly in the Northern Region. Hence "SUB" & "Saharan" ?? It's like saying "Below the Equator" "Across the River" "Down Town" "Below the Sahara" . Yes. A REAL geographical reference.
My son’s paternal great-grandma is from the same part of MD...same last name as him. Hey, family! So, he is multi-generationally mixed at least two, maybe three generations. I love African Ancestry, Gina and Dr. Kittles; they broke it completely down for him.
My mom was good friends w some of his family. I have baby pics of me w them I was always aware that his family wasn't exactly "white" .. they have a different look to them. Like a caribbean look almost. One day I asked my mom what his family was She told me "mixed." This was back in the 90s. Him having die hard native Americans in his family is true too. 😂😂😂 I think it's the Piscataway tribe if I'm not mistaken.
How would that be possible? Blk Americans (descendants of slaves) are not 100% anything, so the term "biracial" when one is born of one of us is a divisive misnomer. We're all multiracial. Obama is "biracial" because his father is not Blk American; on the other hand, Meghan Markle is not "biracial." Guitarist Slash (of GnR) and actor Wentworth Miller present as "white guys" because their mothers are Blk Americans, multiracial themselves, which means their children will have more Caucasian genes than "Blk" ones. (I use quotes here because this term, as it applies to genetic origin, is a misnomer.)
Uh uh. The reason for that is because the white man started breeding with Africans way before US even began. They were doing it there first. The real reason is too deep for you so I will not discuss it here.
Oh please Terry, do not speak upon things you do not know. Africa is the cradle of Mankind, so it does not need any mixer to have different phenotype's.

MissNophi2UWhy are people saying he is not black, like he's not black at all. The test basically said he is about a fourth African, which makes sense if his mom is a product of a black american and a white woman, or two mixed parents. It probably means he has a black grandparent, since his maternal test showed European ancestry, and most black Americans have European ancestry too. Many families probably wouldn't identify with that black grandparent, but his family does. Many mixed people identify as black so it would make sense that he, and his mom, see themselves as black. It's all part of the African Diaspora story.

I wish to add, Thank you Dr Rick Kittles and Gina Paige, for creating African Ancestry dna testing. It's awesome and although i've yet to take my test, i've watched many Africans and African Americans discussing their amazing & interesting results. It's understandably appears, such an emotional experience & i always feel so happy/joyful for the person in question. It's so wonderful & it's great for all these people, to find out much more about their respective ancestry. They absolutely deserve to know & why shouldn't they?! It's good to know where our roots hail, bec it helps us to feel more so "whole", when we have an ancestral place to call "home". For many Africans globally & specifically Africans within the Caribbean & the US, they don't know, for the most part, whereby their ancestors hail from. It's critical to know where our ancestors hail & every human being, regardless of skin shade, religion, etc;, has that human right. Thanks for sharing. Peace to all.

I am around that age & my dna test results have come back very normal, very accurate, so far as current science will allow. My dna matches well with my parents, so it's pretty much all in line with what we do know about our very diverse ancestry. Gina Paige is so adorable!! Thank you for sharing & please keep bringing us more wonderful, interesting & fun content. Peace to all.
European descent doesn't necessarily denote "fair complexion"...or does it? Just like African ancestry doesn't necessarily denote "dark complexion" right?
That’s the difference between genotype and phenotype. Genotypes are dna strands that actually determines racial makeup. Phenotype is skin color, hair color, hair texture etc. they are not one in the same
@@kedronmarsh1773 Many people have difficulty understanding this Heck, many people still have trouble differentiating between race, ethnicity, and culture.
As a Hungarian, this was a really fascinating discussion to watch. From a European perspective Rock Newman would pass as one of us with most people, but there would be a minority, including me, that would recognize the somewhat recognizable Sub-Saharan African facial features he carries. Now about with what race he identifies with is his personal freedom to choose, but I also believe that it's not very fair to yourself to downplay and ignore a great part of who you biologically actually are as a person.

In these times , if black Americans don’t reconnect learn and familiarize themselves with their global families long before then ~ you’re going to have a lot more than teasing to worry
Thanks for this round table discussion...I really appreciated the last ten minutes about the deconstruction of race. It truly speaks to the issues regarding DNA that scientists do not want to deal with -- publicly. Race is a sociopolitical and economic concept that has nothing to do with being human; we all have 98% similar DNA as was said. DNA testing first began within the scholastic and research affiliations to study human kind's kick-of point and subsequent ancient migratory patterns. As with everything else developed by governments and universities, after they were done playing with it, private and university labs started marketing basic testing to the general public as a service. The small amount of DNA that is different *can* distinguish you from someone else, unless they are from the same family as you. Forensics uses a 'DNA Profiling' process called 'variable number tandem repeats' (VNTRs) to isolate markers. It's configuration is considered unique in a manner which is similar to how fingerprints are. These retail Admixture tests for mtDNA (the people on your paternal or maternal grandmother's side) only tell you the migratory locations of those people, related to your grandmothers, that you share markers with. Two vastly different scenarios and the mtDNA test is only good for narrowing down the search for people who may be related to you. And even the DNA Profiling isn't tracking a person down, it's just ruling out whether the spit on a glass is yours or someone else's, and that gets blown out the window if the spit is from a person related to you. So you'd end up doing additional testing (such as paternal DNA). I mean, it has its useful aspects, yet it's not some be all to end all procedure for establishing 'ethnicity' by any means - and 'ethnicity' simply refers to where, in the World, you came from. The silliness of race becomes apparent with genetics since the only difference, between someone being 'Black' or 'White', is the amount of melanin that your DNA instructs genes to produce in your skin. It's absurd to even consider it as significant to anything connected to intelligence, skills or other capabilities. Race is just another control tool employed to distract and detract from the real issues of economic disparity, bias and xenophobia. There still remains a huge gap between what scientists know and don't, or even understand, about the Human Genome. A great deal of it has to do with being stumped by so called 'junk DNA' and mainstream academia's refusal to consider the metaphysical and Spiritual aspects of it (but that's a whole *other* story - lol). *The Truth of reality is, we are all one Human family sharing a common experience* . Everything is connected; separation is the illusion. So much of what we experience has been manipulated and orchestrated yet how disarming would it be for those sociopath 'designers' if we stopped playing in their game by casting off all the arbitrary boxes they made to fit our differences? What would happen if we celebrated one another, each as we are, instead of bickering about these petty concerns? What if we shared with one another instead of falling for the the "Ole American Grit" or "Get Mine" memes and sound bites. That would be *truly* revolutionary. -----------------------------------------------------

I saw a TH-camr named Nia who only has 6% European but her maternal line ended up European! It just made me realize you can look black (like her) and still have maternal European!
@@MercyAlwyz23 Interesting. From what i've witnessed many times over, many Caucasian/European people do not accept what they truly are (if any African dna is showing), bec they don't want to be associated with anything 'non-white" which is so very shameful, sad & even disturbing. If truth be known, it's much easier for our relatives to lie and our ancestors to have lied, but when a dna test confirms something about our dna, our ancestry, this is not a lie. It's what current science tells us and it's based upon truth, not lies. Science won't lie, but our family's words can certainly be based around shame and ensuing lies. We must all be more educated, to know that there's only one race, the human race and we're all much more similar, than we are different. We all share just over 99% of our DNA, albeit a small genetic variation for each of us. Also, there's much beauty, in every possible way, within African and non-Caucasian culture. European historians wrote many wrongs regarding African peoples, their ancestry, their genetics, their intellect and their everything pretty much. Africa possesses much more genetic variation than within all of Europe. And even more importantly, contrary to popular belief, African's don't all look the same! Just like any other ethnic group, from North to South Africa, there are many outer variations, pertaining to their human physical characteristics. I laugh when people "choose with genuine interest" to take their dna test, then when they receive their results and it does not line up with what they wanted to see, or with their own ill perceived ideologies & expectations, they then have the audacity to get upset and say, "Oh this is so not true". Or they say something like, "This test is absolute garbage, etc;". We humans are very funny and complex creatures, yet, we do not have to be, but we for whatever reason/s, "choose" to be. All the best and Cheers.

Before I learnt of this organisation I sent my DNA test to an organisation who sent my DNA to a lab in Israel, to my utter chagrin, and only discovered after the result of the test. When I challenged them asking why Israel, they in invited me to a conference in The Netherlands, wanting to pay for flight and accommodation. Of course I declined. Quite suspicious, but it left me extremely concerned about what they've done with my DNA without my permission. The reality is everything single thing is about race! It's in our DNA! The WS made it so. The black community is the WS play ground. We live in their world!
Rock is what most people call generational mix, which usually carries much more European genetics than biracial b/w mix. My husband is also generational mix like Rock. He comes from a community of people who have been mixing with Black, Indian and white, but are classified as Black. I think the Indian part is questionable.
Yes. Generational mix is everywhere in the world. I myself come from a large mixed race community in South Africa- mixing for 600 years. Same with Mozambique, Namibia and other parts of south en Central American. Americans are only learning about this now it's been done for a long time in other parts of the world. But like she said only 6 % of the black people they tested don't have sub Saharan African, very small percentage in contrast to namibians and other countries
Heidi From the Motherland , there is no such thing as sub-Sahara Afraka or the Middle East. Those are terms were coined by invaders. Being non-melanated or having albinism was seen as not normal in Afraka for millions of years.
+lanceflx63 I'm just explaining it so you can understand geographically that Africa have diversity- using these regions are almost accurate to describe different Africans- culturally and genetically. So what's your point? Oh you're trying to make the point that most Americans make that there's only one "type" of African. North Africans, East Africans, west afrixans and indigenous southern Africans are very much different from one another not just in terms of culture but genetically as well. That's all I'm saying. Oh yeah- in America Africans aren't allowed to be different from one another. Oh yes forgot that rule.
Rock Newman is a Black Man he just took the light white color from his ancestors, my DNA is opposite 80% African and 20% European. I have a Beautiful Black Mother and a Light skin Dad. Love the show Rock.
African Ancestry might benefit from a consult with a sociologist/anthropologist/cultural psychologist to help explain DNA results. Racism and slavery has done such a historic con job on how people view themselves. For example Stuart Hall is a sociologist and explains that people have been taught the false notion that color, hair and bone structure equates to characteristics likened to intelligence and beauty. He basically states race is a floating signifier, because it takes on whatever meaning people attach to it. Rock views himself as a Black man, raised as a Black man, and has segregated experiences of an older Black man. Therefore, Rock is a Black man. American currency is not under girded by the Gold standard anymore, so we attach meaning to it that does not really exist. Its the same with race because race was assigned meanings that never existed. Other than size, height, complexion, phenotype, hair we are human beings. Therefore, every stereotype you know of has been programmed by a system. Asians are not smarter than Mexicans; Puerto Ricans are not smarter than Blacks; Native Americans are not smarter than Russians; race is a lie. Long held cultural and familial attitudes toward education is probably a better predictor of academic success than anything else. Let this show serve as support that no one can define you, but you. Go be great! See Stuart Hall's brief clip below th-cam.com/video/bMo2uiRAf30/w-d-xo.html

Being black is a mindset and Rock has clearly lived the experience (heart and soul). I Iove the Rock Newman show for its platform to deliver information and present interesting insights through the guests he's had on. Doing so, serves to stir the intellect instead of the usual ho-hum of topics.
He doesn't necessarily inherit 40% of his white ancestry from his father and 40% from his mother, but I guess they didn't want to make it more complicated than it already is.
I am from a mixed race family here in Africa. Dad and Mum both mixed, so we are mixed race, we somehow married mixed race people, our children are mixed race. However some cousins married black African so we refer to their kids as quarters (meaning quarter European), those who married White people we call their kids point 75 ( meaning quarter African). Those who have married fellow mixed race people, we refer to their kids as (point 5) meaning 50 50.🥰 I tell you we are the proudest family you ever met. Most importantly we acknowledge that black and white is in our DNA. Rock you are from a beautiful family. Never forget the brave African ancestors (20% in you) who survived slave trade, because of them you are here.
That's how my family is. We come from a long line of mixed people (5 or 6 generations straight with not one fully black or fully white person). But in the 60s half of the family had children with a Black spouse and half had children with a white spouse. Fast forward to today, I descend from the Black branch of the family tree (you wouldn't know I have European ancestry unless I told you). But I have cousins who are phenotypically white and you wouldn't know they had African ancestry unless they told you.
DJ Universoul It wasn’t always rape. Blacks also had children with white indentured servants. For Rock Newman to have a white foremother on his direct maternal lineage in the video it’s obviously she was more than likely an indentured servant. Also there were biracials who were sold as slaves from West Africa being the children of marital unions of European men & black women on West Africa’s coasts. Spanish, Portuguese & Portuguese Jewish men often wives on West Africa’s coasts, but also the English, Dutch, French, Swedes, and Danes. In the New World there were often concubinage situations of emancipated black women who produced children with white men in full blown love affairs, and there was placage culture in Louisiana. I am NOT idealizing or romanticizing anything, but the record sure needed to be set straight.
Why ignorance is so popular in our(African Americans)culture. I can’t believe 30 people liked that initial comment that does not expound upon the entire truth. Far more people liked the comment opposed to those that actually thwarted this half truth.
What they shouldve said was . For a long time. Mixed race peoples only married mixed race people. They lived as black culturally yet maintained their geno and pheno type of Europe. Actually dna splits and divides .
Re: 12:45, that's true what Rick says about Native Americans (not all) because the Seminoles are definitely one tribe I know of that grafted in many African Americans, who were then identified as Black Seminoles. This is documented history. When the Seminole wars were going on in Florida, the military reports from it described the Seminoles as both groups.
Great question by Mr. Rock Newman.. Can they trace his 20% African to a specific people. I can wait for them to have that test available.. On my ancestry DNA results I came back 22% African and most of that was from Nigeria.. I'll be first in line to try the test when they get the technology.. This was a great show and I learned tons from watching.. Thanks for sharing.
You could have tried to identify as white and lived a comfortable life, (even though that picture of you in the 80s definitely proves you’re African 😎) many lesser men would have. But the fact that you stuck to your convictions and struggled with your people and have used this incredible platform to raise our consciousness as a people is a testament to your greatness. Rock Newman does look part African actually and that's great & he is very proud of his African roots. He may not be very dark skinned, but his facial features do display some of his African roots. I knew from the moment i saw him, that he may possess some African ancestry. Funnily enough, my husband also noted this & i didn't say anything to him about Rock Newman's African ancestry. It's interesting to me, as to how we all see others and perceive others. It's all good, so long as we're respectful & do not put others down. @@INTUITIVENORSK2303no he doesn't, have you seen his picture when he was a child. White skin with blonde straight hair 😂. He permed his hair curly in the 80s
Come on Rock...you should have known that you were mostly white. Being mixed can also be those who have parents whom are both mixed. Mixed means mixed...but I am really surprised that you did not know this! Africa is super diverse but not all Africans are black people. North Africans are berbers and closer to Southern European people and even Arabs. East Africans have lots of Arab lineage. It shows up in their ancestry dna results. Cape verdians are also multigenerational mixed race people. West African Bantu people are usually black with little to no admixture and they all look black with very dark Skin, 4 C hair, and various facial bone structure. Light skin and non 4 type hair is usually indicative of racial mixture. Rock Newman cannot be that ignorant to think he was a black African when I cannot think of one tribe that looks anything like him smh. Rock you are white with some African black ancestry. Your not even 50/50.
Rock Newman is a Black man he has black man energy, I'm so tired of black people who want to say who's black and who's not...there are many blacks who have white looking skin, with two black parents, or one black parent raised 100% black, and have more allegiance to their community than the darker complexions...we come in every shade 'The Rainbow Children'
@55.46 when they're addressing the fact that the white guy is 80% white and 20% West African, is an inter-generational fixed percentage from the gene pool. This is also true of Afrikaners (Boers) in South Africa whose African settlement stretches beyond 13 generations (i.e. before 1700). It doesn't require that a recent ancestor was black, it just means that there was that input in the collective gene pool when it was a lot smaller. In the case of the Afrikaners, this was connected to the shortage of white women in the early days of settlement, and most of the white men married with Khoi Khoi (google that last description).
I for one enjoyed this show! My paternal DNA is western European and my maternal line is D native American and yet I'm 82% African. 20% is his and if he wants to claim black than he can. I did see the hurt in his face as well.. the same feeling I had when I found out my father's line is white my mother's line is native.
Haplogroup J is widely known as a Middle Eastern signature, not 'European', as the geneticist hear states. Arabs, Assyrians, Jews ('Middle Eastern' Jews), North Africans have it. Spain is R1b mainly, along with the the British Isles and France, and Western parts of Germany.

He seems disappointed that he is not more black. Look at his face when he was told both maternal and paternal was European. He kept stuttering.

Thank you Rock Newman for very good questions. I like these Geneticists so much. I have been watching Dr. Gina the whole day today. I am an African watching at home in Kenya. I wish they can take some tests here in Africa. We are also quite diverse like African Americans. Bottom line...the whole world is one big family, no one is pure. This is God's good intention to kill discrimination.

Rock is what most people call generational mix, which usually carries much more European genetics than biracial b/w mix. My husband is also generational mix like Rock. He comes from a community of people who have been mixing with Black, Indian and white, but are classified as Black. I think the Indian part is questionable.
For the true meaning of word "Indian" is Black Person! ( "INDI" means black, as in INDIa ink, hINDu and INDIgo the darkest color of the spectrum).
I have people in my family like that as well.
I love you Rock, you are beautiful human being...you are ALL SOUL and Heart...love has all colors. You are my brother either way.
Rock is blacker than some "black" people I know! He’s still a brotha in my book
My heart goes out to him, this is so ALOT
Amen...Black people being proud of being Black 🖤 connect me to my roots
Great show Rock. Your Trump joke was hilarious. This company is highly commendable for destroying the samples instead of selling it.
No one needs the samples, all is needed is the data itself and from that any lab company can replicate the dna
I am excited to use DNA Ancestry...My friend used it and found out what African tribes she may be from... Embrace Diversity.
Let me pick myself up of the floor, poor guy's European. I'm laughing so hard!
I was too, lol. Yo, this is funny.
He is what you call a quadroon. Quarter black. 1 black grandparent.
@C J He is Black.
Say what you want, but Newman ask some great questions.
Rock Newman is a Black Man he just took the light white color from his ancestors, my DNA is opposite 80% African and 20% European. I have a Beautiful Black Mother and a Light skin Dad. Love the show Rock.
That was just utterly ridiculous what you just said. At the end of the day he's a White man. Stop inviting europeans to the cookout
He is so so cute trying to understand it all I had a blast watching him learn about it all 😹
African Ancestry might benefit from a consult with a sociologist/anthropologist/cultural psychologist to help explain DNA results. See Stuart Hall's brief clip below

I like rock Newman and his show.Very down to earth man.He got soul.He is comfortable interviewing african people. Hey didn't he use to be an boxing trainer yyeeeearrrs ago😊👊🏿🤜🤛?
You Go Rock!! My Brotha!
I'll admit, i came back to this video to just look at Dr Paige... ❤😘
U thirsty.
Being black is a mindset and Rock has clearly lived the experience (heart and soul). I Iove the Rock Newman show for its platform to deliver information and present interesting insights through the guests he's had on. Doing so, serves to stir the intellect instead of the usual ho-hum of topics.
stevieT stevens smh
love his explanation of DNA
He doesn't necessarily inherit 40% of his white ancestry from his father and 40% from his mother, but I guess they didn't want to make it more complicated than it already is.
Yeah, those Genealogist either were nervous or have NO clue what they are talking about.
***** Absolutely!!!
Yes, they don't seem to truly understand the white mans science
Still waiting on y'all to build and run a lab better. How many samples have y'all collected in the last 5 years?
But in the
60s half of the family had children with a Black spouse and half had children with a white spouse. Fast forward to today, I descend from the Black branch of the family tree (you wouldn't know I have European ancestry unless I told you). But I have cousins who are phenotypically white and you wouldn't know they had African ancestry unless they told you.
the mixing was rape
DJ Universoul speak on it !
I really like Rock but he needs a hug 🤗
I just ran into this .. This is very interesting .. Wd love to do a DNA test on my ancestry
I'm on of them
The most important thing said was mouthed at the 41:35 point.
You are and always will be our Brother!
Do you know that Big Daddy Bowe accuses Rock of stealing 15 million from him? He also accuses Rock of having an inappropriate relationship with his eldest daughter.
Rock's proud of his African roots and that's a great thing. Take care and Peace bro.
West African Bantu people are usually black with little to no admixture and they all look black with very dark
Skin, 4 C hair, and various facial bone structure. Light skin and non 4 type hair is usually indicative of racial mixture. Rock Newman cannot be that ignorant to think he was a black
African when I cannot think of one tribe that looks anything like him smh. Rock you are white with some African black ancestry. Your not even 50/50.
I really believe he thought he was closer to 50/50. The black in him must be strong lol.
Wow, Richard, this is one comment I have seen of yours on TH-cam that I actually agree with...🤣😊☺️
He was hoping do his Cultural background.
He knew. This some Rachel dolazol shit
@@Neverknownone LOL!!!
Dr Rick kittles laugh at 33:49 is the sum of this video 🤣🤣💀
I did see the hurt in his face as well.. the same feeling I had when I found out my father's line is white my mother's line is native.
what Native American haplogroup did you're mother's line belong too?
You still belong to us, Rock!! You not going anywhere!!
You're right the J haplogroup is more middle eastern, not sure why she is saying European.
John Dean If their making these simple mistakes, you wonder how accurate their database is regarding different haplogroups.
That’s correct but would you really expect her to admit that distinction? Lol
I said the same thing, Ashkenazi are descendants of Abraham just not Isaac and Jacob ..
