How to identify whether the problem is based on parallel flow or counter flow if it's not mentioned in the question?

If in the problem the case is not mention then you can take it parallel or counter flow heat exchanger. But as a counter flow heat exchanger has more effectiveness it is preferred to take counter flow heat exchanger.
