Thank you for sharing the videotape highlights from the Dolphins-Chargers game that day. I've been looking for network footage of this game for nearly 45 years! I was at this game, just my 2nd NFL game, and the only time I got to see my idol, Bob Griese, play in person. I've attended hundreds more NFL games since then, I'll be at Game 579 in Cleveland on Sunday but none will ever mean more to me than this one.
At 1:14:40 the TV camera shows a movie crew near the end zone. Summerall and Brookshier comment that they're filming a movie called "Foolin' Around." Released in 1980 starring Gary Busey and Annette O'Toole, it was the first movie ever filmed entirely in Minnesota. It's a screwball comedy where young Busey is the hero who's trying to win the heart of O'Toole. Kind of a cross between Blind Date (where Bruce Willis tries to hook up with a woman, win over her rich parents, and deal with her jealous fiancé and the crazy Butler) and Ferris Buehler (Like Broderick, Busey plays a whimsical fun-loving guy with luck on his side as he attends several different outdoor events). Fresh off an academy award nomination following his Buddy Hollie starring role, Busey was trying to get his film career going as a leading man but this movie fell short and he later regretted taking it over Urban Cowboy. The Met stadium scenes in the movie appear 20 minutes into it. Busey is down on the sidelines clapping for the Vikings as his (camera crew?) friend is scoping out babes in the stands with a camera. They see O'Toole on a closeup whom Busey had met previously. He hops over the sideline wall and jogs up the stairs, then sits in the open seat next to her to say Hello. The dialogue goes as follows: Busey: How do ya like the game, who you for? O'Toole: Are you kidding? I'm for the Vikings. Busey: Well I don't think they're gonna win today. I think they're gonna get put under. (A prophetic prediction, though negative for a fan being up 7-0 at the time) He changes the subject and starts trying to move in and then her boyfriend shows up with snack bar food & drinks. Busey gets up to leave and accidentally knocks them all over the guy, making a mess. The Rams ended up winning 34-17. I saw the game live on TV back in the day. Some years later I watched Foolin' Around on cable. It has never gone to DvD and is considered rare. It's online on a few sites at only 360 quality. An Amazon hack is trying to sell the VHS for $130.00 which is ridiculously overpriced. th-cam.com/video/Pq6DUOiiHuk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=reneebell
One question about the highlights of the Dolphins-Chargers games interspersed throughout this file. I noticed only the clip of the final play featured NBC's broadcast audio alongside its videotape of the play. Is that all there is where the call and broadcast are in unison? Not complaining about the radio broadcast used for the other highlights. As a Dolphins fan living in SoCal during the Griese-Woodstrock-Marino eras I never got to hear Rick Weaver's play by play so hearing it from this special game for me was a real treat! Now that I know this much videotape of the game's broadcast exists, I can't help but hope that someone out there may have the complete NBC telecast. If not, though, just knowing this much has survived makes me very happy. Thanks again, Midnight Dugout, for posting broadcast footage of this game and others on TH-cam!
These are the only clips I have ever seen in all the years I have been doing this. I doubt we will ever see a complete broadcast of it. Most did not have NBC audio. The few that did were edited poorly and did not fit well in this format. The radio clips were a far better fit. Oh how I wish we had more NBC Broadcasts from this Era.
The last 20 seconds of the Dallas / Cardinals game was insane !! How does Robert Newhouse fumble the ball inside the 20 with 15 seconds left setting up for winning field goal. But crazier is Wilkenson has a rookie QB that has never thrown a ball in the NFL drop back with 10 seconds and throw a pick giving the cowboys the ball right back. No wonder why Bud W sucked as a NFL coach
That Horse-Collar tackle @ 54:32 by San Diego would probably have gotten that defender not only a 15 yard penalty, but also a suspension and 2 years in jail in today`s crappy NFL
Same here, I also remember watching this game. Hard to believe no flag was thrown but that was the era. Can you imagine any QB being slammed like that today? All hell would break loose.

Appreciate the World Series broadcast from NBC…Game 5 Yankees vs Dodgers towards the back of the video
Harvey Martin absolutely crushes Jim Hart !! What a beast he was !!

Great story. I was not familiar with that movie. Not much of a movie guy. It was cool to see the footage at the Met.
Excellent information

I despise the Cowgirls but their road uniforms have always been the NFL's best.

I remember Tommy Kramer getting killed this game vs the Rams 6:23:07 watching as a kids this play stayed with me... thought he died
