I was born in 1954, one of six. This video took me back, remembering Mom who only wore face powder and red lipstick. First thing in the morning, she quickly groomed. In summertime, she wore sleeveless blouses and shorts, all cotton, so Mom ironed most days. Thank you, Kristina, for your lovely, love-filled videos.

My mom always had an ironing basket. I refuse to iron unless it’s 100% necessary. That’s what dryers are for.

All her life my grandma had the habit of quieting the house every evening. Dishes done and put away, surfaces cleared, curtains drawn. After that point, it was personal time to wind down, and no more work was done. Now that I have a place of my own, the whole routine seems comforting.

This is the first time I am leaving completely on my own at 48 and trying to develop a routine for me. I have to keep reminding myself I'm here alone no kids to cook for or getting up to go buy milk because I forgot the night before.

“From a lovely bride to a disheveled wife” sounds like it could be the title of this particular chapter of my life😂. I just wanted to tell you how much you have helped me feel better in my own body! It’s so strange how we just soak up some attitudes from the internet without even knowing, that’s why it’s really precious to see such a good example! ❤

I learned about the curtain opening quite by accident as I’m not a 1950’s housewife. A 1950’s wife moved in across the road (I’m in the country), as I’ve done for years I get up and immediately open the front door so my dog can go out through his doggy door. Before 7AM the new neighbor knocked on my screen door and entered. She said I saw that your door was open so I came right over. She stayed for almost 2 hours! I had to be rude to get her to leave as I needed to get ready for work. For over two years after that, I never kept my door open in the morning. The 1st time I saw this 1950’s routine I understood why she thought it ok to come uninvited. 😂
I wish there was something like this when I was raising my children. I really struggled with keeping a clean house for many years. Lists really helped me. I too put everything in one place, then sorted to put away. One time my exceptionally clean, organized, and skinny friend popped over. I was so embarrassed! I had everything in the middle of the living room floor ready to be sorted. Our house is VERY small. She said, “What are you doing?” It certainly didn’t make me feel good about my overweight, messy self. Now, my children are grown and my house is neat and tidy. I love it when my grandkids come over and mess it up!
Thank you for showing what a normal house looks like! Lived in and full of love!!!

I grew up in the 1950’s with a family of seven and one bathroom. No one had AC. We never ate out, my mother cooked and baked. Laundry was hung on the clothesline. We had one tv and one car. As the decades pass it seems like families think they “need more and more.” Unfortunately to afford all of these “needs” both parents have to work.
My mother always looked nice. Back then folks would not dream of going out in pajama pants! Although some ladies actually shopped with brushed rollers in their hair, covered with a scarf.

  • @MargaretErbe-t7s
    @MargaretErbe-t7s 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

Born in 1946, I saw this routine done by just about all the ladies on the street. The ones who went to the beat of a different drummer were not seen as 'gòod' housekeepers. Homes were much cleaner back then. Mom worked at home. Families only had 1 car. My grandkids ask 'what did you do with no tablets, only 1 radio, 1 phone in the hall?' Kids had adventures every day. We played outside, had friends, climbed trees, walked lots. I did not feel deprived. Women prided themselves on Mondays with the 1st wash hung on the line ' the whitest sheets. Routines organized daily jobs and you felt a sense of accomplishment.

Kristina, so sorry to hear about your unexpected repairs. With the cost of everything these days it’s never fun to have that kind of surprise. I am not one to comment often but wanted to thank you for these vintage routines. These days we have bigger and bigger houses with more “stuff” and it’s not always easy to keep it all tidy with a busy family. I love hearing these voices from the past telling us it is ok to take a nap or encouraging us to spend time with a hobby. It’s just such a great reminder.

Hi Kristina! I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now. I'm 32 and live in a house that is 6000sqft in rural Alabama, the house was built in 1904! As someone who grew up with a single mother that head mental health disorders, I did not learn to keep house. No kids yet (maybe someday) but this house has been a huge undertaking. I just want to thank you for putting out these videos showing a modern day woman taking care of her family and home. For showing it's not all sunshine and rainbows but you cant have rainbows without rain! With your videos and the help of an app that I found, I'm getting a routine down to keep this house clean but welcoming! Thank you 🥰💖

I was born in 1968, the youngest of three, and I grew up with a lot of this.🥰 My mom was a ‘50’s bride, and held onto those useful and beautiful housewares and habits. I love seeing all these vintage things, and your home is so warm and full of character and love!❤. Nowadays, with minimalism and plainness being all the rage, people’s homes look institutional!😅. You’re such a lovely lady, thank you for sharing and being an inspiration.🌷

This cleaning routine was great to watch. My mom, a 50's housewife, did not model this lifestyle. Our home was never that neat or clean, but we ALWAYS had a good dinner. Like her, I dont like to clean, yet I want a clean, tidy house, so I've learned a few routines of my own over the years. I hope you find your own rhythm.

Kristina, I enjoy your videos so much. I especially like to see you keeping house with the children and pets getting in the way. You just include them and let them "help," or in the case of the cat, you give him a little cuddle time. Thanks for keeping it real. Not staged. Not perfect. You spark more joy with your artistic character than an empty, gray modern apartment with minimal possessions.

I love your red refrigerator! We have red microwave and coffee pot. Our house was built in 1922 and one of the counters in our kitchen is red too. Its original. I never want to change it, even if other people hate it, i love it. We are only the 4th owner, and we bought the house from my inlaws...so, its my wifes childhood home. We have updated a few things out of necessity, but keep to the 1922 feel. I really like your video's and your home. People raised big families in small homes. I think people have lost touch on what its like to just be " normal " for lack of a better word. Sharing bedrooms growing up was completely normal! Having a baby in the parents bedroom for long periods of time was normal, I read a parenting book from the 30s that said having a baby sleep in a dresser drawer near the mother was perfectly exceptable when a crib or bassinet were not available. We ( as a society) have gotten way to bougie! I love how you are taking things back to a simpler time and way of life.

my parents were married in 1951. I must ask my mom about her morning routine when first married! I was the last of 8 kids and born in the 1970s, so by the time I rolled around her routine was dawn to dusk cooking, packing lunches, serving meals, washing dishes, with lots of laundry, hanging clothes, and ironing thrown in. I think she grabbed 30 minutes to herself at 1:30 on a good day. Lipstick, a bit of eyebrow pencil & brushing out pin-curls was only on Sundays - but I do recall watching her makeup routine on Sunday a.m. Also, my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all plus sized. My grandma's 1930s day dresses make me want to go back in time and raid her wardrobe :)

I'd be interested in a recipe/menu video, but I'd also be interested in seeing you try one of these routines for a longer period of time - maybe a week or two? - to see how well they work over a longer period and with some non-daily tasks included.

It is nice to have a routine to follow and just work through without much thought, it’s so helpful if you get sidetracked easily. ❤

When my son was young, during school breaks I would make Nutella banana French toast at least once! Make a Nutella banana sandwich, then dip the whole thing in batter and fry.

Honestly, I don’t care for meals and cooking stuff, but any house cleaning stuff, I’ll be there!
And please let us know when your book is published. As a book-a-holic, I’d love to support you there.

We live in an older home and our elderly neighbor had told us she was friends with the woman who lived here years ago circa 1950s 60s 70s and our neighbor said she made sure Mrs. Harriman, who lived in our home, was doing ok for the day and once Mrs. Harriman was up for the day she would open her curtains on the side door facing her house. If they curtains didnt open the Mrs. Harriman was sick and she would go check in on her as shelive alone. ❤

Hello! I found you on Instagram a few months ago but only started watching more of your videos just recently. Everything I've watched so far I love! You are a wonderful and amazing human and thank you for sharing your research and ND tricks and thank you for being brave and vulnerable with us too. So often we see curated homes and yours says "Humans live here. Big Humans, 5 little humans, and two cats live here in this small house." Which feels so much more realistic and relatable. So thank you for sharing your life with us! 💖

A word about contact paper. Mostly, it costs less than peel-n-stick tiles or epoxy. The are many videos on 'how to epoxy countertops in the kitchen for under $500,' but LaCheery 160"x36" in gray green marble contact paper cost $50 (Amzn). Veelike 15.74"x118.11" in Pink Marble $11.89.
When I rented, I once had an ugly 4 ft bathroom vanity, which I covered in contact paper. Years later I visited someone who rented that same apt and the landlords had left the contact paper on it and it was still in great condition, so contact paper does hold up well.
