A true master of his instrument, living legend, Vidwan Umayalpuram K Sivaraman has been playing the Mridangam for more than 6 decades. He has accompanied several top ranking Carnatic and Hindustani musicians in their concerts and has trained many students in the art of mridangam and continues to train disciples. He has been awarded many prestigious awards, the highest being the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and glorius Padma Vibhushan.

In January 2020, taking inspiration from the Chennai Margazhi concert season, Banyan Tree enhanced the experience of its annual festival of Carnatic music Dakshinayan by evolving it into a daylong concert series aptly titled as Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam. All the lovers of Carnatic music who could not be in Chennai for the famous Margazhi season had a feast of Carnatic music in Mumbai with their own Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam.
