    Can we just appreciate the humor in chapter 20 😂 man this is now my favorite book of Austen's!

    I'm just up to chapter 6 and stopped to comment. Wow. Just wow.
    I haven't read the book, just seen the movie. I've read Austen's more famous books, but these gave me no idea Ms Austen could be so non-stop funny. Every paragraph is dripping with comic irony. Especially when Austen is going for the jugular of those who are anti- novel, even when she is taking a sledgehammer to "The Spectator". So wicked! Not at all what I expected from an author famed for her understatement --such bluntness is really surprising. I had to listen to chapter 5 several times, just to savour the heat.

      I totally agree! I love her wit in this. Very good. I never read this, only saw the movies and so far I adore this.

      @@ellie698your right it was but it wasn't published so Jane got it back and was revising it when she died.

      I'm on chapter three and had to keep myself from smiling too much since I'm literally on the bus. This book is so refreshing it's becoming one of my favourites, and I've got to say Mr Tinsley is becoming one of my favourite male leads (heros), this could be the first time I've really fell for a fictional character.

    Is it ok if I ask why people like this book

    • @ellie698
      @ellie698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So many reasons!
      One of them is because it's a bit of a Mickey take and a comment on the sensationalist Gothic novels that were popular at the time and that the main protagonist, 17 year old Catherine, is fond of. She reads them voraciously.
      She is lives in a sheltered little village and is incredibly naive in the ways of the world and of how people think. She thinks well of most people and doesn't understand that people behave for other motives than they say. Yet, she "sees" gothic plots like the ones she's read in books in ordinary life.
      It just shows how teenagers who are still learning about the world pick up all sorts of ideas from the materials they immerse themselves in, which gives them a completely skewed idea of real life.
      A topic that's just as relevant today given that people can curate what they hear, see, watch and read like never before don't you think?
      I found listening to each chapter then reading the sparknotes summary and analysis useful. It only scratches the surface of course but there's more you can read about the book if you wanted to.

      Personally I found it very fun. I hate misunderstandings but they were solved pretty quickly, the plot is not very serious, and is a mockery of how some gothic novel readers get so absorbed and lose their sense of reality.
      I'm not usually into naive female leads but I don't mind this one, the male lead is also one of my favourite ever. The humour and sarcasm throughout the book are so good and very enjoyable to me. I really recommend reading it, or watching the dramatization version, it's like a speedrun of the whole story but really fun and well done.

    Nope sorry - I enjoy a wide range of books from Austen's offerings to action like Clancy's Jack Ryan.... I would NOT enjoy listening to a Jack Ryan novel ready by Benedict Cumberbatch (as much as I adore his voice) - equally I don't enjoy Austen read by an American (no matter how talented). Moving on to other pastures...
