I had one in November as something was found in my 60+ Bowel Cancer Screening test. The staff were fantastic, I had sedation but it was still a bit uncomfortable. However, it was a small price to pay and it probably saved my life. I had a 4.5cm T3 tumour removed on 17th December... all clear now and forever grateful to the NHS

It was the worst thing I ever experienced in my life. The pain was worse than having a baby. I'm 78 now. It was in the 60s. I didn't have any sedation. Never again.
Had my first colonoscopy done last week. The staff and doctors were superb. Never had any sedation, just went without and never felt a thing, bar the scope going in. Worst thing about it is the prep! My God, I've never sat on the toilet so much! Don't be scared, it could save your life.

One time a nurse held my hand through the whole procedure and I'm a bloke in his thirties lol.. I have a family history of bowl, pancreatic, and prostrate cancer. I have just had my prostrate removed because of cancer. The colonoscopy is a walk in the park I’ve had 5 done in 4 years, you get a nice cup of tea and a sandwich after it. It’s a no brainier, wife/kids/grandchildren potentially gone, or a colonoscopy?
I’ve had a few Colonoscopies over the last few years. I’ve now been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. The NHS were brilliant as they sent me also for a CT Scan to ensure there was no cancer. Not a nice procedure but all professionals involved really looked after me. Thank you NHS...you were brilliant! X
What symptoms have you had for UC ? I've bowel issues can't seem to pluck up the courage to ring up about it. Pipes and tubes etc, going inside me is a real phobia.
@@v8cool231 Hi, I just had bleeding. No pain or discomfort. I was affected psychologically due to the unnatural bleeding. I then went to my Dr who then referred me to my local hospital for many tests. Thankfully I was diagnosed with UC and put on medication…not long after my bleeding stopped. I now have to go for scams every two years. My 2nd scan is this month. Please go to your Dr/GP. The tests are not as bad as you may think. For instance, if you have to have a endoscopy procedure you can have a sedative to get your through this procedure. Don’t hold back any longer…go and see your Dr/GP. All the very best…please let me know how you get on. If not however, I understand. Best of luck
I had mine yesterday. I was so anxious and very worried. I had mine in LLandough in south wales. The staff were fabulous and I had the sedation and it took all the stress away immediately. Little uncomfortable with simply the passing of some gas due to the air put into the bowel. Thankfully nothing serious found but I’m pleased now I had this. I watched this video and it is spot on as to what to expect. Thank you to the lovely staff and this wonderful lady - you helped a very stressed 47 year old awaiting the procedure. Thank you.
My first one is scheduled for Friday. I'm more nervous of the procedure than the prep. Thank you all for your comments. I feel better about going in now 😊

I had one. One thing to remember; after taking the liquid laxative, do NOT venture out of the house until it's time for the appointment---failure to heed this warning will result in having a messy accident in your pants in public.
My first colonoscopy, I was awake and felt everything. The next time I told the doctor about my first experience and he gave me a higher dose of anesthesia. I remember waking up in the recovery room. It was heavenly - except for the prep.
Crazy, here in the US, you are knocked out. No way I’d let anyone do this without being asleep. Strange how they can do it over here with sedation, yet this Dr says they can’t.
Had one today, only got some xylocain for my throat, I'd rather do a boxing match with a guerilla than do this again, worst part was feeling the camera touching the walls in the stomach.
Had mine on Tuesday prep wasn’t the best, the procedure was actually very quick, I had sedation which helped nurses and doctors were very professional and nice, had a Gastrointestinal lower bowel without sedation august 2020 that was more uncomfortable and sore in parts so if you have sedation helps. Felt worrying about was the hardest part the procedure was the easy part.
I had a colonoscopy yesterday and never felt a thing ,fretted over it for two weeks .total waste of time.i had the sedation and watched the whole thing had no discomfort whatever and I was done in 40 min,i have nothing but praise for the doctor and the nurses who looked after me at Hartlepool hospital ,please don't fret about having this done .
I had mine done several months ago and a lot has changed since this video. The prep wasn't that bad. I used Clenpiq. It's a split dose of 5.5 oz . I drank the first one with a straw at 4pm , then the next one at 9 pm. I had no cramping, I didn't have to " run" to the bathroom. It was pretty easy. During the procedure I was given Propofol. The next thing I knew they were saying I was done. My husband took me out for breakfast, went home, rested. Not bad at all. I do highly recommend using a doctor who does nothing but colonoscopies. Less chance of any complications.
Hazel Eyes, it went quite well, the doctor was very friendly. I had so many questions before the procedure, luckily she patiently answered all of them.... I wish you all the best.
I’ve had three colonoscopies and two sigmoidoscopies. This is a very clear and accurate description. Much better and less uncomfortable the second time with sedation. I had gas and it was fine, no smell of gas. Staff friendly and kind, and put me completely at my ease. Please please do go if you are offered one. I had two sorts of polyps removed, and actually watched the whole procedure on screen. This can be a life saving procedure, don’t worry about embarrassment- they see hundreds of patients. Do it!❤
Thank you for sharing your experience. Were you conscious during sedation? What can I do to retain my memory during sedation? I don't want to lose my memory.
Key word - propofol. In the hands of a skilled professional, it's a wonderdrug. So many procedures could be made SO much easier with it as I was reminded 10 days ago when my #60 colo was done. :). Yay for propofol
Mine was agony it had me shouting out with pain I would never have it done again without being put under they said that it was a difficult procedure because my bowl’s are very twisted. Should have been in my place 😫😫
Unfortunately no they had tried to do it several years before and hah had to stop because it was so painful that I couldn’t keep completely still and they were afraid of puncturing my bowel but this time they just carried on 🤬🤬
I had one yesterday. Sadly, although sedated, I was in too much pain for the procedure to be finished. Now awaiting an appointment for a CT scan, which means more prep drinking too. After all the fasting, drinking the horrible prep and getting a covid swab prior to the day, i felt and still do feel utterly despondent that there was no end result.
I feel your pain I have had 2 with a 3rd soon, each time it has been the worst pain ever and they told me don't bother with the sedation it won't take that long, all I can say there giving me sedation.
I had one and was never asked at any point if I wanted any sedation or anything for the pain, so I thought obviously it was going to be a pain free procedure, unfortunately how wrong was I t, the pain was so bad I started to see stars and went all giddy and almost fainted, and they had to abort about a quarter of the way through, and that was it they never asked me to come back and have a scan of any type or anything, so my advise would be to anyone who's having this procedure is to definitely ask to be sedated and for any pain relief they can give you, I certainly will never have one again without these things being put in place first.
Although I think most of the time this is quite a pain free procedure for most people, unfortunately When I had one I was never offered any type of sedation or pain killers of any sort, so I found it very painful, so just as advice I would suggest if your having make sure to ask for so e sort of sedation/ pain killers of some sort.
i had mine yesterday. i was given the choice of sedation or gas and air. because i had no body to stay with me for 24 hours after the procedure i chose gas and air. the nurses were great . very reasuring and polite. i had both the camera down my into my stomach as well as the colonoscapy so i had the two procedures at the one visit. i have to say my choice of gas and air was not the best. although it did help a bit i did feel it was quite painful . at one point i asked the doctor to stop the procedure but then decided to allow hin to complete the job because i didn' t want to have to return. if i had to do it again i'd definately chose the sedation route i'd be fine with that. don't worry about having it done it could save your life but go for the sedation if possible. it's true about the blood in your stool aferwards. they took biopseys and it does produce some blood so don't be alarmed. this video is exacly how my experiance was so full marks to that.
I also had mine yesterday and I had the colonoscopy and the endoscopy, I felt absolutely no pain I was completely under and I have to admit the worst part is the prep! They were really great at the facility they gave me an IV, Put the mask over my face told me to take deep breaths next thing you know I'm waking up in the recovery room didn't feel a thing, Now I'm just waiting on the results of the 5 polyps they removed moved from my bow bow and lower stomach I guess Now I'm just waiting on the results of the 5 polyps they removed from my bowl. The doctor assured me that they didn't look cancerous, they look like regular polyps 2 centimeters, I guess they can tell just by looking at them if they are abnormal looking. Now I'm just trying to keep myself calm until I hear back from them with the results.
I had 2 colonoscopy procedures in 4 days the first without any medication but unfortunately wasn't fully empty despite the pre treatment This was uncomfortable with a little pain The 2nd time as I had a cannula fitted they gave me a mild specific sedative, this made the whole procedure to a none event Very easy. Always have the sedation.
i will be having a colonoscopy within the next couple of weeks ,i have had a chat with the team already got my moviprep ready ,this video reassures me that all will be well on the day ,many thanks for the upload
My 51-year-old nephew is afraid to get a colonoscopy even though he had bleeding from the rectum. He passed it off as all sorts of excuses. Now he is found out he has stage 3 almost 4 rectal cancer. His life is altered forever. Folks don't be afraid of a colonoscopy it's a walk in the park compared to what you'll be looking forward to if you don't get it done.
Had two in three weeks with no sedation ( have a problem with anaesthetic) and the laxative so needed a different one ( they said it was the first time ever ) Uncomfortable yes , but it got me out of hospital within 30 minutes after the procedure. Second time they took away the bits that were cancerous , so it was short term pain for long term gain . I get them every six months and I’m still here .
Had CT colonoscopy 10 years ago no pain but awful prep. Had another last year, better prep but very painful due to air/gas pressure, left me sore and burning which hasn’t gone away after 9 months and is impacting on my life.

I will never past another test again I landed in hospital for a month in a half with a very bad spleen damage that was 5 months ago and I'm just starting to feel better one Dr told me I was lucky to be alive was in ICU for 3 days
The doctors and nurses actually do not know what they are talking about when they say you can do it without sedation. Even partial or incomplete sedation is risky.
I had one a few months ago at Canterbury Hospital. Great staff and professional throughout. I found the worst part of the whole procedure was having to drink that gunk beforehand. Took 4 samples but all okay thankfully. Watched some of the procedure and the only thought that sprung to mind was that my colon seemed cleaner than my flat. Seriously though it could save your life so a few minutes of discomfort is a small price to pay.
Had this done a year ago... my advice is relax and trust the medical professionals. It is not painful or uncomfortable.... (well not in my case) 3 polyps were removed.. I did not know this until afterwards. I took no sedation... Hope this helps someone... PS didn't like drinking ALL THAT WATER.. 😁👍

I had one done at WGH a couple of years ago. I didn't get a cannula, afterwards they just put me in an empty room, no food or drink and I just got dressed and walked out after half an hour of being left alone.
I never have a Colonoscopy several times and after the first time when had sedation…I watched it all on the screen and chatted to the consultant the whole time…When the Nurse came to fetch me …she asked if I was ‘coming round’ from the sedation…He said/ coming round!!…She didn’t stop talking!!!!After that I didn’t have sedation for the following colonoscopy!!…

When I left doc said I had one call which was removed and sent out for testing otherwise he doesn't know what's causing my stomach problems and constipation.😢
I have to undergo another colonospecy sometime this year because I have a past history of diverticulitis and polyps, the test itself isn't that bad but the prep is a pain in the ass.
I had one and I asked for an injection because the first lady who went in came out crying. The sedation didn't work and I felt after everything. It can get painful like a severe gas pain but I asked them to give me a break when it got too painful. The pain is like gas pain, not other kind of pain.
I got my first one today and it was good they found nothing I was clean thank God I am.49 years old . But all is good prep was tough but otherwise I am glad I get regular physical and blood work and so I know all is good

I had one a year ago and had opted to have no sedation. Never again, it was SO uncomfortable, wasn’t painful but VERY uncomfortable which made the whole thing sore. The nurse who stood beside me, supposedly to reassure me, was busy chatting to her colleague!! I would always advise anyone to accept the sedation. Perhaps it was the doctor’s technique that was not quite right and that’s why it was so uncomfortable, who knows!!🙄
have had two of these investigations the first one was extremely painful The second one at a different hospital, I didn’t have any pain at all couldn’t believe the difference
Last year in September I had a colonoscopy and they found 11 polyps. They were benign thank god. But I have to have one in a year which is September this year 2023. 😮
So, from what I understand, some people don't opt to be sedated? I can't imagine that. I think I was put out. When I woke up, I woke up higher than a kite. My goodness was whatever they gave me powerful!
I have mine tomorrow and I’m so nervous! I have severe anxiety so doing stuff like this is really nerve wracking for me! I’m 19 and this will be my second one! I had my first one when I was 16/17 and I was supposed to have an endoscopy aswell but apparently I kept pulling it out my throat 😬 so they couldn’t do it. So that meant when I had my colonoscopy I had the maximum dose of sedative so I don’t remember a thing, I just remember laughing cos it tickled. But since then my anxiety has got worse so I’m so nervous for tomorrow, I really hope it goes well.
My experience was not good. I had mine less than a month ago. I opted for sedation and painkiller, but i feel they just put water in my hand. I felt a lot of sharp pain and they just kept saying move to another side. I was wide awake and not relaxed. Very miserable looking people in the room and did nothing to help me or make me feel better. The nurse i saw before i went in, had said if you feel pain theyll probably give gas and air or something. When i came out she asked how i got on. I told her and she was surprised. I hope i never have to have that done again!! That was raigmore hospital in inverness scotland.

@@haloSrising The prep is the worst part. Drinking that stuff that tastes so horrible. But I actually had to have two colonoscopy's done because the first time I wasn't clear enough. So the next time I had to fast for 2 days instead of one and take a laxative with it. But that was my issue because I take pain medication daily and it's keeping me from going to the bathroom like I should. So it's important to be clear before it's done or the dr. won't be able to see anything. But the second time I did it , I asked for Zofran ( which is anti-nausea pills) and I took that before I drank the prep and it went better . But when you get to the hospital, they give you an IV and wheel you in the room and put some medication in your IV and the next thing you know, you wake up back in your room. And your out the door within an hour-ready to go eat. I actually went straight to a restaurant! So no real recovery time. It was find. I hope all goes well for you.

Hello Elise , can you please tell me how did it go?
I had mine yesterday. I was so anxious and very worried. I had mine in LLandough in south wales. The staff were fabulous and I had the sedation and it took all the stress away immediately. Little uncomfortable with simply the passing of some gas due to the air put into the bowel. Thankfully nothing serious found but I’m pleased now I had this. I watched this video and it is spot on as to what to expect. Thank you to the lovely staff and this wonderful lady - you helped a very stressed 47 year old awaiting the procedure. Thank you.
I had one under sedation. The prep is definitely the worse part.

If your going to have this procedure I've had 3 of these its really no big deal and not painful, don't worry
@rohandhanota9944 I think that is the dumbest reply I’ve ever read. 😏😂
I had mine done today . They told me I have proctitus. They removed 6 samples and one polyp was the size of a tangerine

Do it!❤

Key word - propofol. In the hands of a skilled professional, it's a wonderdrug. So many procedures could be made SO much easier with it as I was reminded 10 days ago when my #60 colo was done. :). Yay for propofol

My son said it was not nice the prep for CT scan
i had mine yesterday. i was given the choice of sedation or gas and air. because i had no body to stay with me for 24 hours after the procedure i chose gas and air. the nurses were great . very reasuring and polite. i had both the camera down my into my stomach as well as the colonoscapy so i had the two procedures at the one visit. i have to say my choice of gas and air was not the best. although it did help a bit i did feel it was quite painful . at one point i asked the doctor to stop the procedure but then decided to allow hin to complete the job because i didn' t want to have to return. if i had to do it again i'd definately chose the sedation route i'd be fine with that. don't worry about having it done it could save your life but go for the sedation if possible. it's true about the blood in your stool aferwards. they took biopseys and it does produce some blood so don't be alarmed. this video is exacly how my experiance was so full marks to that.
I had 2 colonoscopy procedures in 4 days the first without any medication but unfortunately wasn't fully empty despite the pre treatment
This was uncomfortable with a little pain
The 2nd time as I had a cannula fitted they gave me a mild specific sedative, this made the whole procedure to a none event

Both the SEDATION and the IV are completely optional. The procedure is NOT that uncomfortable for many people.
