- Hi guys! I hope you enjoy today's much-requested video. I finally got round to filming all about the Cambridge English Literature course, including info on the texts I studied, the papers I sat, the essays I wrote, and the style of teaching I had. The aim of this video is to help prospective applicants or to reassure candidates who are about to start studying at Cambridge but as ever, I can only speak from my experience so please note that some of the things described in this video may differ from college to college. The Shakespeare paper has now become a portfolio you have to write made up of three essays you write during the term, replacing the portfolio she talked about in second year. The set text at the moment has changed to Antony and Cleopatra. You have to write a selection of essays on different Shakespeare texts - at least one of them has to be mostly on Antony and Cleopatra but the other two can be on any topics you like. Some colleges just let you chose a topic but others give you vague areas to look at - like 'Bodies and Selves' or 'Page to Stage'. The 'glossing' part that she mentioned is now not required and you do the Shakespeare and the Prac Crit at the end of first year, not second.
The most interesting part of you talking about the course is really seeing your excitement and how passionate you are about literature and language! That is probably what sets you apart from a good to an excellent student. You can tell the course was a perfect fit for you

Are there any recommended textbooks or such that are followed or used for the Practical Criticism and Critical Practice paper, or is it entirely a study-by-doing thing during and for supervisions? Do you have to date the texts for your examinations? How is the dating process actually taught? It would be great if you did a video on this.

Yes, we do! We go to the same lectures (all 150-200 of us) and seminars (smaller group teaching like 10-15 people) together at our department site. Then I had additional teaching in even smaller groups (around 1-4 people) in college😊😊

The post-colonial paper sounds so interesting! It's a shame I could only take one or two optional papers in final year because there were so many other papers I would've loved to have studied📚
