The SNES version also omitted the industrial stage where you fight Rolento. The GBA version also had that same censorship of replacing Poison and Roxy with Billy and Sid. Another great thing about the GBA version besides being closer to the arcade version than the SNES is that you get to select different colors for your characters and play as the SFA3 versions of Guy and Cody. It's also nice that your characters have dialogues with bosses. And the Sega CD version is the only version to have voice acting.
Very informative, and cleared up a lot of my vague understanding about Final Fight after reading about the game on Wikipedia. I remember reading somewhere else that Guy (while technically born in the U.S.) was actually raised from childhood in Japan (and in fact, he has not completely mastered fluent English). Supposedly after being trained from a very young age in Bushinryu ninjitsu, he returned to the land of his birth (Metro City U.S.A.) in order to sharpen his fighting skills by facing opponents with completely different fighting styles, where he met Cody. The game begins shortly after this point in time. The "Gay" reference is obviously a mistake in romanizing the spelling of his name from Japanese to English, but it raises the question of whether the proper romanji spelling of his name should be G-U-Y or G-A-I. The Japanese Kanji for "gai" (外) means "outside, external, foreign" (as in the word "gaijin", meaning a foreigner or outsider) so this makes some sort of sense if he was actually raised and educated in Japan, while the pronunciation is identical to "Guy" in English. In the game he is called Guy (i.e., gai) since he is foreign, or from outside Metro City.

A true arcade classic. The SNES port was a little week. But the Sega CD version was great. Now I’m playing it on the Switch with the other Capcom beat em ups.
I was playing this the other evening on PS4 with a friend (it's part of a pack called the Capcom Beat em up Bundle with 6 other brawlers) and it's still as playable today. Some of the characters are really cheap (Rolando for example) but what was interesting was the similarities to some of the streets of Rage characters, particularly Signal. Awesome episode by the way.
i remember when i met this beast for the first time, it was an arcade gallery near our high school when we used to go after a day of class, they barely used original machines, but instead custom arcade cabinets with very large 29" TVs with huge control buttoms, so image the size of these gigantic sprites, it was amazing, and it still is a fantastic game.

Another excellent and informative video. Now we have Final Fight on the Capcom Beat Em Up Collection (one of many excellent Capcom beat em ups on the collection) for Nintendo Switch which is totally awesome, especially in the many different ways you can play multiplayer. You can play local couch coop on the Big screen when docked, can play in tabletop mode, can also play local wireless between multiple Switches, and can also play online.
Yes. I wish more people had the Beat em up collection. Most of the time when I go to the online multiplayer I just get tumbleweed blowing across my screen.
I remember it was 1990 when i first seen this classic in the kilmarnock arcade in ayrshire, Scotland. I used to play crime fighters which is a nice game aswell.. But when i seen ff my eyes couldn't believe the giant characters on thec25inch monitor and the great attract mode and thumping music.. I honestly was blown away.. Its the best scrolling beat em up in the arcade of all time.. I think anyway. I love street of rage on the megadrive and it comes a very close second to this arcade masterpiece..
I still have the Sega CD version. It can be played as a music CD (for the soundtrack). Random SEGA CD's can be played like that (some include voice sound bytes).

I get why people are so negative towards it. Sure it's missing the two player option and a couple of levels but is still a great conversion especially back in 1991
One of the greatest games ever. Well now with the renamed to Hugo character in SF4 they've clearly made the link to Andre the Giant a thing now. His intro thingy is based on Andre's match with Hulk Hogan, so he may not originally have been based on Andre, but Capcom have went down that road now for sure. Really like Poison just from a design aspect, she just looks so fucking cool and badass. Specially in SF4. Damned is also so iconic. It's a wonder he didn't get into SF too. Also the Sharp 68000 wasn't just a development machine. Capcom liked it so much they BASED the CPS system on it. So was very similar. Hence things run pretty much the same. Shame it never got a PROPER sequel that was worthy of the first game :( A new Final Fight game could make for a great mobile game too, not a fan of those much, but beat-em-ups do work well with there simple controls and graphics. Hey Streets of Rage 4 is coming so maybe will spark a little re-birth of the classic beat-em-up and Capcom might jump on board! We can hope!
Final Fight was also featured in the arcade compilation, Capcom Classics Collection for PS2 & original Xbox. It's also worth noting that Mike Haggar made an appearance in another Capcom game: Saturday Night Slam Masters. Soddom & Guy first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha, Rolento first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 2, & Cody appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3.
I remember being blown away as a kid the first time I saw Final Fight at an arcade in 1989 or 1990. The graphics and animations were head and shoulders above the rest, and remain excellent even by current standards. The gameplay was absolutely astounding. Well done Capcom 👍👍👍

I have always thought/wondered if this game had any influence from the 1984 movie Streets of Fire. After all, in that movie: the main character is named Cody, in the movie Cody wears the suspenders that Haggar in the game wears (more or less), the movie is about a guy rescuing a girl who was kidnapped by a street gang, and some of the costumes worn by the enemies in the movie (such as the Bred/Dug characters) have some costume similarities with some of the Bombers from the movie. I have no doubt there were many influences, and I've never seen an official connection with this game and the movie Streets of Fire, but I've always wondered about it, and every time I watch the movie again I'm convinced that the developers of this game must have been inspired partially by this movie.
In 2004 I was watching Godzilla: Final Wars & when I saw Captain Gordon in the movie I stood up and yelled, That's HAGGAR!!! Even the title had FINAL in it, I knew who they were basing that character from Final Fight! When ever I play Final Fight I am always Haggar when I first saw he could Pile Driver his opponents I was hooked! I have the GBA Version and I'm glade you gave it high praises as i truly do love that game! Just watching this video makes me want to break out my GBA & drop kick some baddies! The SNES version was not just missing Guy. There were also other stages that were missing. I seem to recall there being 2 that were missing, though they are a little hazy in my memory. There was a sort of industrial zone where there were fire floors and stuff and there was another stage that had an elevator going up and the boss, Rolento, of the stage would climb around and chuck grenades at you in the elevator or something like that. As said in this video, in this game, many of the characters are named after musical references. Roxy was named for the band Roxy Music, Poison was named for the band Poison. They were replaced by Billy and Sid (might be getting spelling wrong from game) who, if memory serves, were named after Billy Idol and Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols. The boss Abigail was made up with face paint and named Abigail as a nod to King Diamond, who wore face paint and had a popular song called Abigail. There is also Axel and Slash as a nod to the members of Guns n Roses. I can't remember any others off the top of my head, but there are a few.
This was my favourite arcade game. I bought the SNES version, was okay but was not as good. Then in summer 2007 I bought an original arcade, complete with basic art graphics on it. It has not been used much in the past 5 years to be fair, but remains one of my most prized possessions. Now sitting with a motor cycle cover sitting on it and in the garage, I am awaiting the time when it will make a reappearance.

Yes, I've been bowling since I was about three years old. I've actually had about 15 perfect 300 games. Thanks for the kind words. I don't really have a favorite console. I've been playing games since the black-and-white arcade games back in 1976 with everything since then. Maybe the super Nintendo or the original Nintendo I guess. Another great vid on a great game my best bud and I spent a great deal of time playing. Can't remember if it was Super Ninturdo or Sega CD - as he was the true gamer he had most systems and 2-3 stayed on his gaming table. As a huge wrestling fan I HAD to play as Haggar and be the Inaugural Mayor of Suplex City. Lol Yessir, music, comics and rasslin', that's me! Congrats on all your perfect 300 games in bowling!!! It took me about 200 attempts on MAME before I finally completed Final Fight with one credit. ;*D It took me about 50 or so to complete cadillacs and dinosaurs with one credit.
Great Documentary, The Amiga version did support two buttons providing you had a joystick with A & B buttons or you could use a Sega Megadrive/Genesis controller.

I've only had a NES clone back in the early to mid 90s, so Mighty Final Fight is the only Final Fight game I came to play. And boy I still have warm memories of my Chibi Hagger beatin' 'em up!

Poison is. They are two different characters. 5-That’s funny about the gay thing. Not sure if you meant it on purpose. 2. Andore is basically how Japanese would pronounce Andre phonetically hence An dō ray, kind of like Ramune is phonetically for lemonade. He basically is Andre the Giant so An dō ray it is. 5. Gay or Gai is actually pronounced more like Gī. However, since most American I know can't pronounce it correctly, it becomes guy.

Fun fact: final fight, street fighter, & saturday night slam masters all share the same world. Various final fight characters show up in street fighter games, like the alpha games & SF4 games. Also if Guy or Cody beat the car mini game in super street fighter 4, the "Oh my car." guy appears
I went into my local arcades and soon as I seen this game over was hooked also got to mention ninja turtles man there was big lines outside to play turtles and mortal kombat street fighter 2 that's the reason I never did any good in school days in the 90s
first played this on SNES.. loved the hell out of this game. Always enjoyed playing as Hagar.. i learned how to maximize the hits per enemy be4 they get knocked over.. that's one of the main things i remembered doing. As i get older i realize how few ppl knew abt this game.. i didn't know that at the time..thought it was classic and still do.
I loved this genre growing up. I played this game in the arcade quite extensively. I remember Sega's answer with Streets of Rage. By 1991, I had both SOR for my Genesis and Final Fight for my Snes. I preferred SOR even though the graphics were not as sharp. Of course that all changed in 1992 with the release of SOR2. Everything about the second Streets of Rage was absolutely mind blowing. The sound, graphics, gameplay, and of course superior crowd control made SOR2 the best in the genre.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Final Fight was truly something but at least to me it was short in two areas. 1. The ability to chain attacks that essentially controls the crowds. Nothing is as smooth to me as SOR2. It you're good enough, ypu can roll into every enemy in the first two games in almost in a rythm. 2. The move sets for each character IN SOR 2 was truly different and each character felt genuine and unique. The second game is pure nirvana as you strip enemy after entemy unscathed on the hardest setting.
Cool game back in the day, played it at the arcade everytime I went, I even had it for Sega Cd, which didn’t last long since Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat was right around the corner.
Was playing this online MAME a few years ago, and on the car bonus stage, as the badguy came on to say the "Oh my god!" my friend shouted out on the Mic , "MY CHILDREN WERE IN THAT CAR!"
I was 10 years old when Final Fight first came out on the arcade machines. My older brother by 6 years was in his junior year of high school, which I would later be in during the 1996-97 school year. By the time Street Fighter 5, Mike Haggar is no longer mayor of Metro City and returns to pro-wrestling. Cody was elected mayor of Metro City. Previously, he served time in prison for disorderly conduct. The Mad Gear gang rises from the ashes. After participating in the Street Fighter 4 tournament, Guy took Kimberly from Street Fighter 6 under his wing as his Bushinryu apprentice.
The best home port released in North America and Europe. The X68000 Was the best home version back in the day. But like I said, the computer cost about $6000 :-)
The very first time I was ever introduced to the game at all I was walking down the stairs and my friend was playing the SNES version and I kept hearing the Haggar "Hu-RUP!" noise over and over and thought it sounded stupid. I was so excited to see a SNES in action and when I walked into the room and finally saw it, it BLEW.MY.MIND! Super Nintendo was such a huge step up from 8 bit NES. Final Fight was my very first SNES game I ever saw being played.
StreetWise was very good in my opinion. I play that game endlessly and like how it started off as a fighting game and turn into some type of post apocalyptic drug game. It gave you something different with a good story line. I actually was waiting on part 2 of the way part 1 end but now I see why I never happened.
I swear this genre needs a revival, I can't believe these type of games went the way of the dodo. In fact they are still very appealing if done right. Look at how fighting games never went away and just evolved to incorporate 3D models and cell shading, namely Street Fighter 5 and the new upcoming King of Fighters XV A good example of what this genre should look like this day and age is the new Streets of Rage 4, now if Final Fight could get that cell shaded treatment to look like a full on anime with high poly cell shading made to appear like an animation, then we'd really be onto something. Here's waiting for Final Fight 4 to be done by the same makers as Streets of Rage 4.

I tried Mighty Final Fight once. I had this GBA cart called Capcom Mini Classics that had it as well as the NES versions of Bionic Commando and Strider. I played those two alot more.

Very informative, and cleared up a lot of my vague understanding about Final Fight after reading about the game on Wikipedia. I remember reading somewhere else that Guy (while technically born in the U.S.) was actually raised from childhood in Japan (and in fact, he has not completely mastered fluent English). Supposedly after being trained from a very young age in Bushinryu ninjitsu, he returned to the land of his birth (Metro City U.S.A.) in order to sharpen his fighting skills by facing opponents with completely different fighting styles, where he met Cody. The game begins shortly after this point in time. The "Gay" reference is obviously a mistake in romanizing the spelling of his name from Japanese to English, but it raises the question of whether the proper romanji spelling of his name should be G-U-Y or G-A-I. The Japanese Kanji for "gai" (外) means "outside, external, foreign" (as in the word "gaijin", meaning a foreigner or outsider) so this makes some sort of sense if he was actually raised and educated in Japan, while the pronunciation is identical to "Guy" in English. In the game he is called Guy (i.e., gai) since he is foreign, or from outside Metro City.

A true arcade classic. The SNES port was a little week. But the Sega CD version was great. Now I’m playing it on the Switch with the other Capcom beat em ups.

I was playing this the other evening on PS4 with a friend (it's part of a pack called the Capcom Beat em up Bundle with 6 other brawlers) and it's still as playable today. Some of the characters are really cheap (Rolando for example) but what was interesting was the similarities to some of the streets of Rage characters, particularly Signal. Awesome episode by the way.
The game is 30 years old and is still extremely playable today just like you said, that's a sign of good game design
The sounds and music are also so awesome. And the Capcom graphics. Very special game.

i remember when i met this beast for the first time, it was an arcade gallery near our high school when we used to go after a day of class, they barely used original machines, but instead custom arcade cabinets with very large 29" TVs with huge control buttoms, so image the size of these gigantic sprites, it was amazing, and it still is a fantastic game.

Another excellent and informative video. Now we have Final Fight on the Capcom Beat Em Up Collection (one of many excellent Capcom beat em ups on the collection) for Nintendo Switch which is totally awesome, especially in the many different ways you can play multiplayer. You can play local couch coop on the Big screen when docked, can play in tabletop mode, can also play local wireless between multiple Switches, and can also play online.

I remember it was 1990 when i first seen this classic in the kilmarnock arcade in ayrshire, Scotland. I used to play crime fighters which is a nice game aswell.. But when i seen ff my eyes couldn't believe the giant characters on thec25inch monitor and the great attract mode and thumping music.. I honestly was blown away.. Its the best scrolling beat em up in the arcade of all time.. I think anyway. I love street of rage on the megadrive and it comes a very close second to this arcade masterpiece..

I still have the Sega CD version. It can be played as a music CD (for the soundtrack). Random SEGA CD's can be played like that (some include voice sound bytes).

I get why people are so negative towards it. Sure it's missing the two player option and a couple of levels but is still a great conversion especially back in 1991
One of the greatest games ever. Well now with the renamed to Hugo character in SF4 they've clearly made the link to Andre the Giant a thing now. His intro thingy is based on Andre's match with Hulk Hogan, so he may not originally have been based on Andre, but Capcom have went down that road now for sure. Really like Poison just from a design aspect, she just looks so fucking cool and badass. Specially in SF4. Damned is also so iconic. It's a wonder he didn't get into SF too. Also the Sharp 68000 wasn't just a development machine. Capcom liked it so much they BASED the CPS system on it. So was very similar. Hence things run pretty much the same. Shame it never got a PROPER sequel that was worthy of the first game :( A new Final Fight game could make for a great mobile game too, not a fan of those much, but beat-em-ups do work well with there simple controls and graphics. Hey Streets of Rage 4 is coming so maybe will spark a little re-birth of the classic beat-em-up and Capcom might jump on board! We can hope!

It's also worth noting that Mike Haggar made an appearance in another Capcom game: Saturday Night Slam Masters. Soddom & Guy first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha, Rolento first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 2, & Cody appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3.

I remember being blown away as a kid the first time I saw Final Fight at an arcade in 1989 or 1990. The graphics and animations were head and shoulders above the rest, and remain excellent even by current standards. The gameplay was absolutely astounding. Well done Capcom 👍👍👍

I have always thought/wondered if this game had any influence from the 1984 movie Streets of Fire. After all, in that movie: the main character is named Cody, in the movie Cody wears the suspenders that Haggar in the game wears (more or less), the movie is about a guy rescuing a girl who was kidnapped by a street gang, and some of the costumes worn by the enemies in the movie (such as the Bred/Dug characters) have some costume similarities with some of the Bombers from the movie. I have no doubt there were many influences, and I've never seen an official connection with this game and the movie Streets of Fire, but I've always wondered about it, and every time I watch the movie again I'm convinced that the developers of this game must have been inspired partially by this movie.
I have read that was influenced by it. I didn't know this until after the video was made though otherwise it would've included it
In 2004 I was watching Godzilla: Final Wars & when I saw Captain Gordon in the movie I stood up and yelled, That's HAGGAR!!! Even the title had FINAL in it, I knew who they were basing that character from Final Fight! When ever I play Final Fight I am always Haggar when I first saw he could Pile Driver his opponents I was hooked! I have the GBA Version and I'm glade you gave it high praises as i truly do love that game! Just watching this video makes me want to break out my GBA & drop kick some baddies! The SNES version was not just missing Guy. There were also other stages that were missing. I seem to recall there being 2 that were missing, though they are a little hazy in my memory. There was a sort of industrial zone where there were fire floors and stuff and there was another stage that had an elevator going up and the boss, Rolento, of the stage would climb around and chuck grenades at you in the elevator or something like that.
As said in this video, in this game, many of the characters are named after musical references. Roxy was named for the band Roxy Music, Poison was named for the band Poison. They were replaced by Billy and Sid (might be getting spelling wrong from game) who, if memory serves, were named after Billy Idol and Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols. The boss Abigail was made up with face paint and named Abigail as a nod to King Diamond, who wore face paint and had a popular song called Abigail. There is also Axel and Slash as a nod to the members of Guns n Roses. I can't remember any others off the top of my head, but there are a few.

This was my favourite arcade game. I bought the SNES version, was okay but was not as good. Then in summer 2007 I bought an original arcade, complete with basic art graphics on it.
It has not been used much in the past 5 years to be fair, but remains one of my most prized possessions.
Now sitting with a motor cycle cover sitting on it and in the garage, I am awaiting the time when it will make a reappearance.

I don't really have a favorite console. I've been playing games since the black-and-white arcade games back in 1976 with everything since then. Maybe the super Nintendo or the original Nintendo I guess. My favorite arcade bowling game would have to be silver strike. The controls are a bit tricky but it's a lot of fun to play.

It took me about 200 attempts on MAME before I finally completed Final Fight with one credit. ;*D It took me about 50 or so to complete cadillacs and dinosaurs with one credit.
I found it easy, and even easier the more players added.....

Great Documentary, The Amiga version did support two buttons providing you had a joystick with A & B buttons or you could use a Sega Megadrive/Genesis controller.

One of the best things, for me, about Final FIght is that the "Big Guy" is the main character, not the "Jack of All Stats" character (Cody).
Chung Li from Street fighter is also seen in the background of 1 of the Final fight games. Guy is also a playable character in SF Alpha
I've only had a NES clone back in the early to mid 90s, so Mighty Final Fight is the only Final Fight game I came to play. And boy I still have warm memories of my Chibi Hagger beatin' 'em up!

I always thought Andore was based on Andre the Giant as they even have several references to Andre the Giant such as his big Wrestlemania match against Hulk Hogan being copied for Hugo and Alex’s intro. Just a few corrections:
1-You said Mike “Hay-gar.” It’s pronounced “Hag-Gar”
2-You said “An-Do-Ray” when it’s “An-Door.”
3-The O at the end of Rolento is silent for reasons I don’t know...but they pronounce it “Rolent”
4-Roxy is NOT transgender. Poison is. They are two different characters.
5-That’s funny about the gay thing. Not sure if you meant it on purpose. The “Gay” spelling was a mistranslation of “Gai” and Japanese kanji doesn’t always translate well to the Roman alphabet so they thought, “Gay” was pronounced “Gai” or “Guy.” It was never supposed to be pronounced as gay 😂.

Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (AKA Renegade), not Double Dragon, started the beat’em up genre, but Final Fight revolutionized the genre.
could never get past stage 2 as a kid, but now that I'm much older and familiar with the mechanics, I can't stop playing it.
Hopefully Streets of Rage IV is very successful and encourages Capcom to make a proper Final Fight 4.

I loved this genre growing up. I played this game in the arcade quite extensively. I remember Sega's answer with Streets of Rage. By 1991, I had both SOR for my Genesis and Final Fight for my Snes. I preferred SOR even though the graphics were not as sharp. Of course that all changed in 1992 with the release of SOR2. Everything about the second Streets of Rage was absolutely mind blowing. The sound, graphics, gameplay, and of course superior crowd control made SOR2 the best in the genre.

Final Fight was truly something but at least to me it was short in two areas.
1. The ability to chain attacks that essentially controls the crowds. Nothing is as smooth to me as SOR2. It you're good enough, ypu can roll into every enemy in the first two games in almost in a rythm.
2. The move sets for each character IN SOR 2 was truly different and each character felt genuine and unique. The second game is pure nirvana as you strip enemy after entemy unscathed on the hardest setting.
Cool game back in the day, played it at the arcade everytime I went, I even had it for Sega Cd, which didn’t last long since Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat was right around the corner.

Was playing this online MAME a few years ago, and on the car bonus stage, as the badguy came on to say the "Oh my god!" my friend shouted out on the Mic , "MY CHILDREN WERE IN THAT CAR!"

I was 10 years old when Final Fight first came out on the arcade machines. My older brother by 6 years was in his junior year of high school, which I would later be in during the 1996-97 school year.
By the time Street Fighter 5, Mike Haggar is no longer mayor of Metro City and returns to pro-wrestling. Cody was elected mayor of Metro City. Previously, he served time in prison for disorderly conduct. The Mad Gear gang rises from the ashes. After participating in the Street Fighter 4 tournament, Guy took Kimberly from Street Fighter 6 under his wing as his Bushinryu apprentice.
I got the Sega CD version when it was released still the best home port.
The best home port released in North America and Europe. The X68000 Was the best home version back in the day. But like I said, the computer cost about $6000 :-)
Played this in Rhyl, Wales around 1991. The cabinet next to it was Aliens.

The very first time I was ever introduced to the game at all I was walking down the stairs and my friend was playing the SNES version and I kept hearing the Haggar "Hu-RUP!" noise over and over and thought it sounded stupid. I was so excited to see a SNES in action and when I walked into the room and finally saw it, it BLEW.MY.MIND! Super Nintendo was such a huge step up from 8 bit NES. Final Fight was my very first SNES game I ever saw being played.

StreetWise was very good in my opinion. I play that game endlessly and like how it started off as a fighting game and turn into some type of post apocalyptic drug game. It gave you something different with a good story line. I actually was waiting on part 2 of the way part 1 end but now I see why I never happened.

I swear this genre needs a revival, I can't believe these type of games went the way of the dodo. In fact they are still very appealing if done right. Look at how fighting games never went away and just evolved to incorporate 3D models and cell shading, namely Street Fighter 5 and the new upcoming King of Fighters XV
A good example of what this genre should look like this day and age is the new Streets of Rage 4, now if Final Fight could get that cell shaded treatment to look like a full on anime with high poly cell shading made to appear like an animation, then we'd really be onto something.
Here's waiting for Final Fight 4 to be done by the same makers as Streets of Rage 4.

I recommend to play Final Fight LNS, Capcom may had forgot about the saga but the fans didn't.
I tried Mighty Final Fight once. I had this GBA cart called Capcom Mini Classics that had it as well as the NES versions of Bionic Commando and Strider. I played those two alot more.
I thought it was a solid title
