I think the "mood" in mathematics was that physicists and mathematicians didn't get along or didn't work together for whatever reason. So it lead to a lot of overlap in research, and redundant discoveries.
Not sure I would ascribe it to "mood" so much as the difficulty in learning different scientific dialects, especially back then. After Atiyah and Singer, there was more cross-fertilization.
