Back when the bulge from a mars bar in-the-pocket could be mistaken for a, uh, truncheon.... if it had been one of the mars bars you get today, she'd have thought it was a cigarette lighter.

Yes yes yes o agree it's so so funny one of the funniest things I've ever watched and some of Rowan Atkinsons best work. The whole cast were perfect it unfortunately didn't get the attention it deserved I've now introduced my girlfriend to it and my brother's girlfriend and my grandparents

I think he was a bit over the top. He started shaking for no reason even before she said anything. Atkinsons reacts at appropiate times.

I wonder, did News Radio get their format from the Thin Blue Line or vise-versa? I could be parallel thinking, and television networks seem to only do what they know already works, but I find it odd that in 95' both of these shows came out with nearly the exact same formula. Rowan's Fowler is extremely similar to Dave Foley's Dave Nelson, uptight prudish characters who has an attraction for the head woman in the office (Patricia, and Lisa). Stephen Root's Jimmy is nearly identical to Haig's Derek. James Dreyfus' Kevin, who is this zany guy who appears to be gay is exactly like Andy Dick's Matthew.
Probably just a coincidence, as I recall many shows in the 90's had a similar format, but the similarities between the two shows are everywhere.

@@obiwanfisher537 Well Rowan had many many years of experience whereas this was James' first TV role. I'm sure Rowan wasn't perfect at first. I'm also sure if the director, producer, etc weren't happy with James' shaking before she said anything, they'd have done a retake. But they didn't. He was clearly reacting to how she was dressed (which was completely different to how she usually dresses). She didn't need to speak for him to react like that, he was reacting to her appearance. I'm wondering how you didn't get that. The only explanation I can think of is that you don't know the show which makes it a bit unfair to criticize something out of context because you don't understand the reactions or all the set-up in previous scenes and episodes. Or if you do know the show, I can't understand why you wouldn't get that he was reacting to her appearance.
Still one of the best British comedies ever . The cast was excellent don’t have much comedies like these anymore .

@@dragonmartijn I'm constantly amused when watching British TV in America how stunningly bad the subtitles are, they must not get sent scripts for programs and either rely on something automatic, or on some American listener typing what they think they hear. For a real life, try watching the US tapes of the UK series The Young Ones, they're hopeless...

As much as Rowan is great in everything he does, I think Constable Goody made this sitcom .

It’s January 2020, whose still watching? Loved the show, still as funny now as it was years ago.
Oh, I am. It's notable that some comedies from 10 years ago just don't seem funny any more, whereas there are classics nearly a hundred years old that still tickle us. I think really good comedy doesn't age.

Constable Habib was fit
A series I watch over and over.
Ben Elton has written the series brilliantly but there are 2 lines I never stop laughing at.
In no particular order.
First is Kevin and the mars bar. Kevin's reaction is brilliant and excellent acting.
Secondly is Habib in the disco when she says to the bloke she is dancing with " do you mind backing off a little I like my breasts on the outside of my ribcage".
Classic.
Both are absolute gold nuggets of writing and performance.

So much funnier than modern comedies!
The whole episode she was working undercover to arrest 'Johns' and then the other half of the detective force was working on arresting working girls, each unaware of the other unit's activities, so Habib ended up cuffed, and all ended up disastrously.

A great series - they made just enough so that every episode is a classic and they never started running out of ideas.

I took this sitcom for granted when it was first aired. Some of the scenes looking back now and the quality of actors were comedy gold. And im in no mood to fany about,about….erm ..it!
It was like the great music we got back in the 60's and 70's and '80's, you just expected it to never end. Same with British comedy in the 70's, 80's and 90's, Atkinson, Ronnie Barker, Warren Mitchell etc. we did take it for granted.
I must admit, I like a tarty look.
I remember when this show was around but never watched it, even though it starred Rowan Atkinson. It's a very underrated comedy gem.
