When I moved back to LA, I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels. This was something I had occasionally seen in the past, part of lowrider car culture. A reclaiming of a corporate symbol of American success, The Car, from an outsider’s point of view. A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road. Like an option on a voting ballot, "none of the above.”
“Murdered Out," as a look, is now creeping into mainstream culture as a design trend. A coffee brand. A clothing line. A nailpolish color.
Black-on-black matte is the ultimate expression in digging out, getting rid of, purging the soul. Like a black hole, the supreme inward look, a culture collapsing in on itself, the outsider as an unwilling participant as the “It" look.

I met the uber talented Justin Raisen, the producer, offhandedly. He was working on a project with another artist and kept sending me tracks to listen to with the possibility of getting me to sing on one of them. When I learned I could make up my own lyrics, I was in. With the remaining bits of unused vocals, he started what would be "Murdered Out." Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) plays drums, based on the trashy drums that Justin first laid down. I went back and did more vocals and guitar and we mixed it…"Murdered Out" was such a great surprise! Looking forward to our next collaboration.

God bless Kim Gordon for still making music. I saw Body/Head live some years back right after their debut was released, and was fortunate to be front row. At the end of the concert, Kim got down on her knees and ended up coming into the crowd. I can happily die saying that I got to stand next to her while she sang with a microphone cord twisted around her body like a python.
Holy shit this is great.
And surprisingly unique. Kim Gordon's still got it after all these years. I don't think she can lose it at this point honestly. :D

This record slaps every whinging indie boy in the face and reminds us of the exact electricity she brought to Sonic Youth! Its visceral, intellectual and comes on thick in a time where music needs her story.

I have really been loving this song for the past couple of days. That bass line is awesome, and I like that it's still got some grit to it. Funky, but loud all at the same time. I'm glad she's back on the grid.

Pretty sure Michael Gira is the same age and he's making some of the world's best and most brutal rock these days. I was a Kim Gordon fan back in the Sonic Youth days, but haven't liked any of her non-SY work. This sounds pretty good though. Might check it out.
Sam Miller Swans are also killing it, and Michael Gira is deep into his 60s. Funny I'm referencing Swans, because they and Sonic Youth have a deep relationship.

The opening sends shivers down my spine and the entire songs delivery packs an amazing punch! This would have worked perfectly as a split single with Death Grips or someone. Out of every member of Sonic Youth (post breakup) Kim is the only one taking wild, invigorating, new directions in musical expression & stepping out of the usual comfort zone to truly experiment with current new sounds. It’s reinvention at its finest!
Lee’s new records have been snoresville (which is weird because his SY contributions were almost always top notch), and Thurston’s stuff is played out & keeps lamely reaching to the past at stuff that’s already BEEN DONE & his lyrical content has been pure cheese. Steve, bless his soul, will always be my #1 favorite drummer of all time, but his musical interests & aesthetics have always bored the hell out of me, as well as the majority of artists he fostered with ‘Smells Like’.
None of them would ever be brave enough to leap into these newer current types of “Sonic” soundscapes. Kim is leaving them in the dust & I’m 100% here for everything else she sends our way to grace our ears.
