This was my dad's ringtone. We all hated it, but he refused to change it. You'd have this nice, calm, quiet afternoon, and then all of a sudden "COLD WAAAATERSSSS". Fucking jumped outta my seat more than once. Rest in peace, dad. Thanks for the music, Tom.
This song is definitely one of my top ten from Tom Waits. I remember hearing the part when he says “I look 47 but I’m … 24” for the first time when I was in my mid-20s, and was thinking, after years of really heavy drink and drugs, that I was lucky to still be rather babyfaced. I just turned 47 a few months ago, and I somehow still look like I’m in my 30s, though I’ve been homeless, and spent more than half of my life drinking heavily and shooting drugs. I’ve been clean for about five-six years now, and frequently see people at the methadone clinic who are half my age but look older than me. I guess I’m just really fortunate in that respect- it’s a hard life, and I feel bad for anyone who’s currently making the same mistakes that I did. A lot of his songs resonate with me because the lyrics are so relatable, and obviously the musical talent on display is just awesome. I remember someone asking me what type of music Tom Waits does, and while It can be classified (I think) as bluesy rock, or rocky blues, I try to explain it as maybe “Bum Rock”, or “Vagrant Blues”. Most accurately, I think I would classify it as “must listen”- it’s too eclectic and unique to be pigeonholed. Sorry for the long comment- I just hadn’t heard this album in a while, and it’s hard to not just sit back and contemplate life and death while getting swept up in the melody and lyrics. Thanks so much for posting this, and have a great week!
God bless you this Christmas, and yeah, I'll be hanged if I could describe Mr Waits music, but I dig it and it's a great way to clear a room of people with no appreciation for good bluesy rock....love his lead break in this one...
I sympathize with this comment. Im currently 25 and people still ask my age (most people give me 16 years old) when buying cigarrettes lol. I still drink a lot from time to time, have a few benzodiazepines but nowhere near when i was younger and heavily depressed. Thank god my vices didn´t ruin my face structure, just my liver momentarily and my skin. Hoping to leave everything after i turn 30 if i reach that age. Cheers
One of my all-time favorite Tom Waits songs. His music is amazing. I don't have words to express how much I've enjoyed his music over the years. Thank you for your art, Tom.
Reminded of that old ad "We're not for everybody, but then, we don't try to be..."....I like that when I'm on the jobsite and I'm playing this I'm the only one that gets it....
Red's Recovery Room was a bar on HWY 12 btwn Santa Rosa & Sebastapol in Nor Cal & Waits mentions it as he lived nearby (& when this joint dropped Red's was still in business).
I've listened to Tom for decades now. I only just figured out the line was "Slept all night in a Cedar grove" and not, "slept all night and I seen a ghost". 😂
This song was the story of my life from the age of 16 to 25. The first time I heard it I had bought a house, and was a licensed electrician. I'm not exaggerating when I say I cried like a baby when I heard this for the first time. It's like freaking therapy to me when I hear it.

It’s very wholesome that I have met people who have heard “Some men are searching for the whole grail, but ain’t nothing sweeter than riding the rails!” And think that Tom is talking about trains
I think contextually the train image really works...there's nothing on the lyrics or tone that suggests, to me, using drugs. But maybe the guy got busted and spent the night in jail, maybe?....hmmmmmm now it sorta makes sense. But the sleep like a baby with the snakes and bugs part still makes me think of hobos and not drugs.

Great dad..
Nice to have a cool Dad.
Awesome
Man. Rest in peace to your pops. Dad's can be crazy
Marc Ribot just comes in and plays the greatest blues guitar solo of all time.
@AndreaAustoni if'n ya like, watch Joe Gore here on the you tubes talking about playing on Tom's recordings. It's very entertaining
Tom Waits is that guy that comes along to salvage music and life when you have reached the lowest of lows. Nothing better.
If a hangover at the lowest point of my life had a soundtrack... well this should be it...
He did it on purpose!
Hearing Come On Up To The House during a truffle trip got me out of the worst depression of my life.
I’ve heard it said “Tom waits might be the only artist you could hear at a junk yard in the morning and a burlesque show later that night”

Written from the heart.
MR. WAITS CELEBRATES 71 TODAY. HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
Man this song has literally been stuck in my head for weeks. "Cold Watttterrrr"
Man I know you ain’t jokin. What is it about this one…had it get stuck in my head numerous times over the years.
Underrated gem
This song holds a place in my heart. My dad used to play it for me when I was real young… it has really dark lyrics, but I feel them..

God damn thank you Tom waits I appreciate your music so much ❤
Tom you're a genius! this song is nothing new nor original, but the way you make FEEL AND LIVE things is unique !
indian here ; this song grows on you slowly. anyone in my circle dont appreciate it. such a disconnect. until afterlife i guess.
Most people get stuck on the gravely voice, but there is certainly something abundantly human about this music and the lyrics, I’m glad you found it
its a slow burn

Tom Waits tells the truth, embellished only by rhythmic and lyrical purpose.

Tried this. Definitely a different vibe. I’ll keep the OG.
Railroad Earth does a good version of this song too. It's got a faster tempo.
Thanks Mr Waits. Greetings from west CV, go Lancers.
If there was a bus station at the county dump, the Muzak would be Tom Waits' stuff only.
Great solo by marc Ribot!

Woke up this morning with a kooooala
COLDWATER !
Love this song, but it does sound like he woke this morning with a koala with a cold
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
Well a police at the station
And they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
They don't look friendly
Well they don't
Blind or crippled
Sharp or dull
I'm reading the Bible
By a 40 watt bulb
What price freedom
Dirt is my rug
Well I sleep like a baby
With the snakes and the bugs
Well the stores are open
But I ain't got no money
But I ain't got no money
I ain't got no money
Stores are open but I
Ain't got no money
Ain't got no money
Well I ain't
Found an old dog
And he seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems to like me
Found an old dog and he
Seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems
Seen them fellows
with the card board signs
Scrapin up a little $
To buy a bottle of wine
Pregnant women and
The Vietnam vets I say
Beggin on the freeway
Bout as hard as it gets
Well I
slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still
It was cool and still
Slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still and it
Was cool
Slept all night in the
Cedar grove
I was born to ramble
Born to rove
Some men are searchin for the
Holy Grail
But there ain't nothin sweeter
Than ridin the rails
////
I like 47 but I'm 24
Well they shooed me away
From here the time before
Turned there their backs
And they locked their doors
I'm watching T.V. in the window
of a furniture store
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
