SkillUp said in his review that he suspected this game may have been developed as a live service game but the studio balked when they saw the backlash with Marvel's Avengers. I tend to agree as there are a lot of elements in the UI, progression, cosmetics, currencies, etc that don't make much sense in a purely story-driven game, but are right at home in a live service game.
One review said this games like avengers but worse. That's pretty damning. Also why are there chests littered around the city? It's like they said "let's do all the gaas stuff with a batman skin, but worse"
I genuinely think the game is fun to play it can get repetitive but as a Batfamily game, it’s so much fun to run around and hangout with a friend stomping villains
I'm having a blast with it initially. Its hard to find a fair reviewer these days like Jake. We need to get back to making up our own mind about what we like

I really love how even when he feels that a game isn't for him, Jake always is willing to talk about and showcase positive aspects of the game rather than focus almost solely on the negatives.
As it should be, that’s the reason I don’t watch most reviews because id they don’t like it then it’s automatically a bad game. I mainly watch them for gameplay and to see if bugs are game breaking.
I bought the game as a birthday present for myself and I gotta say it is pretty decent so far.I mean yeah the game is repetitive some times but I really like the aesthetic of Gotham city and that we have 4 playable characters to choose from.
As soon as I saw that the enemies had levels in the previews I knew the combat was going to be a grindy disaster. Movement looks really rough. Think I'm going to pass on this one. Thank you for your analysis.
That was a rough day man. They had the double announcement and just like you I saw those numbers and all the excitement went out the window. The silence from WB after Marvel's ate dirt confirmed it all.
I loved about Arkham Knight that thete was no level and that guns were actually deadly like Redhhoods guns basically shoot bubbles that do zero damage and no counter attacks are another problem
Ill pass until it lowers to price. Im so mad that they made a 30fps cap for new gen consoles. That alone does not make it worth full price for this kind of game. It literally shows the lack of care they gave to the development into this game. It looks like a bunch of buisness men got together, and put a bunch of bat fam characters together, and knew that it would sell itself with lack of care into actual development
Definitely waiting for this one to be in the discount games barrel. Had a feeling this was going to happen from the first gameplay and I’m not even mad. Someone else in the comments said games are too expensive to be mediocre and this feels too mediocre to be worth the full price.

Glad to know what I'm in for. Most review are complaints about framerate problems. Dont mind the grind since I'm prone for doing every side mission or pop-up event before main story.
Game prices are the same, particularly with inflation taken into account, in some cases even cheaper when it is. Not to mention game development is 100x more complex than it was 20 years ago, oh and it is literally impossible to guarantee something will be good despite intentions or work put into it, that's just basic reality otherwise everything would be fantastic. Get a clue.

Definitely definitely willing to give the devs a chance to fix up the game some with updates over time. But right now? absolutely not spending $70 on this live-service looking crap, I'll wait until it's half off.
I'm going to wait till the GotY edition crops up on a WB sale in the game store that includes pre order bonuses. They did the same thing for the arkham games, (got Archambault knight GotY for $5, inuding Harley Quinn pre order mission). Not because I'm conservative in my spending, but the game just doesn't seem worth it in price atm. Especially at the locked 30 fps. I never had an issue with 30fps, but after being spoiled with current Gen updates with performance modes, yeah I get the PC guys' argument on frame rates, ots a big deal.
SkillUp, ACG, and Gameranx are my go-tos for video game "reviews" and I think it creates a perfect balance. Jake is always more positive about things, which I think is really helpful when comparing it to people that can be more critical. Keep doing you, Jake!
man, I really wanted (needed) this game to be good. We don't get co-op games like this very often and this had a lot of potential to be super entertaining. I feel like messes like these where technically unpolished games are released are starting to become quite common.
To be fair to it, I think the co-op mode should add some value to GK if that’s the main way you intend to play it. It may not make the game less grindy but playing with friends might make the grind a sort of turn your brain off kind of fun. I’m already locked in with my preorder so I’m in this for better and for worse but it seems like a wait for a sale type of game

Just recently moved across the country away from friends and family, so everything feels very different. Thankfully one of the things that really make me feel at home is getting off work and watching a gameranx video, thanks guys.
Honestly from what I’ve seen, the game isn’t bad, my major problem is the general speed of the game. Like you said, everything feels so slow I actively sped up a watch through to 1.5 on TH-cam and it felt better. The traversal especially using their vehicles just doesn’t feel rewarding.
I went ahead and bought the game without looking at really any reviews and after about 4 hours I’m having a good time. It’s kinda weird having no Batman but out of every one, Barbara Gordon batgirl is my other favorite bat person so I’m sticking with her for this play through. I just decided it’s been a long time since I’ve had a Batman game and I’m not getting any younger. So far it’s a pretty good time. I’m really here for the story and don’t have a laundry list of needs and wants. The video gameyness is an adjustment compared to Arkham but so far I’m pretty satisfied with my purchase
People hate on it without even trying it, and reviewers are prolly giving it bad reviews because wb Montreal didn't pay em lmao. I'm stuck trying to unlock the knighthoods for all the characters n just having fun beating up the random criminals with red hood shooting em in the face
@@bigboee415 maybe I’m in an echo chamber for the last few days but on the positive reviews I’ve watched basically every comment is also positive and almost no one saying they hate it like you’d believe from seeing the reviews. I quite frankly don’t get it and not only do I like it but I want more of it. I got called a smooth brain for buying it and liking it and dead silence after I asked what his opinion is after he played it. I’ve seen this cycle many times over the years. I’m just patiently waiting the “why you’re wrong about Gotham knights” videos that I know will be coming.
One of the best "reviews" in my opinion. I was expecting a average-ish game. I just wanted to play as the Bat-Family with friends. We are goofy enough to make anything super fun.

This game would be cooler if you could bring one of the characters to help you, and you can switch between them. Like imagine nightwing and red hood, you could be nightwing fighting someone, and then you switch to red hood to teleport and give support. This could also help with the grind and give xp to both characters.
What I hated the most is the difficulty setting. I always play game on the hardest setting and with this game, it wasn’t hard, it was just longer. Mobs felt like sponge with HP cranked up like crazy. Near the end of the game it’s super annoying with a certain type of mob too. Medium difficulty could take me 3minutes for a fight While the same fight at high difficulty could take 10-12minutes. It’s ridiculous
Theres a lot of games like that, thats why i often play on easy even, just because i dont feel like button mashing for hours on end. Especially if i just wanna relax or enjoy the story more.
@@gvngbvngiggy exactly, skill based games where both you and the enemy have the same or close to amount of hits to K.O are fine. but when it comes to level games like this i just can't be bothered. if i want to grind away at something i'll get a construction job.
And rightly so, the performance problems are not excusable. All other gameplay and design criticisms aside, this game is extremely poorly optimized and runs like junk on every platform.
It seems kinda odd they went with a slower combat pace than the Arkham titles. I feel like the fluidity of movement was a key selling point of the previous entries, only to be stripped away in favor of slower pacing that seems to do more harm than good. Thanks for the review!
Honestly I don't mind the slower combat, to me it feels like it adds a tad bit of realism to the game. I agree it was fun in the Arkham games fighting enemies all around the room and hitting them from distance but honestly I think the combat in GK would be more life like. Idk just my opinion because in real life a person would be fighting at similar speeds as the characters in GK.

I really want to like the game myself, still plan to try it but it sounds and looks like any frustrations or disappointment is honestly warranted. Fair enough but I wouldn’t want to spend an evening digging through a pile of shit just to find some enjoyment from a game, especially considering games are expensive. If everyone else is extremely negative then it’s for a reason

@@BlazingViolet92 I've really enjoyed the game so far the "loot grind" is not there which is good and I've found the combat really fun. My biggest complaint with the game is how tanky some enemies are which whilst annoying in some areas isn't a deal breaker in my opinion

After a day I basically maxed out my character, all legendary gear expect throwable and a few missing legendary mods. I had a lot of fun getting there though . Wish there was more

The combat is kinda like each character is a different genre of music and their movesets are the different instruments, their gameplay feels better (not as good as arkham series) when you find the rhythm as you finesse from enemy to enemy.
After playing for a few hours it’s crazy how spot on Jake is with this review. Good bones here but they could of done so much more. I think dropping the weird crafting feature and having an adversary system similar to shadow of Mordor to get loot would of been so much better. Also, why do I start the game with 7 Medkits?? There was never an area I felt challenged so you don’t really ever feel like you’re improving.
I think you get seven to incentivise players to stay out longer between trips to the Belfrey, especially before the big enemies start spawning in more frequently and providing a more reliable supply of health packs.
What difficulty were u playing on cause for me 7 wasn’t enough lol. I had to switch the difficulty from hard to medium to beat that triple phase boss fight in the Harley Quinn arc cause they were just ranking hits and I would be getting basically one hit. I like the challenge but after 5 attempts I was pretty frustrated cause I had to use med kits in the boss fights prior so I was left with 1. Btw medium difficulty is a crazy difference from hard. Idk if I’m just bad at the game due to the first day playing but man I felt like I was a god on medium.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have really raised the bar for superhero games for me, personally. I still do want to check this game out so I’ll lower my expectations and wait until a Boxing Day price drop lol thanks for the review!

There's plenty of things the spiderman game does better purely because of the nature of spiderman, such as web swinging being a much more interesting traversal method that Batman's catapult and glide, but there's plenty Arkham Knight does better as well, namely the combat and stealth.

it's a small thing but in the Arkham's when you build the combo meter then can perform a 1 hit take down is really rewarding. It forces the player to be in the fight and dodge/pary all the time

I wasnt sure about this game but having to work towards the ability to glide in a batman game is like having to farm side missions to get web slinging in a spiderman game. Absolutely love your commentary on this. I won't be able to play it until tomorrow evening, but I'm thankful that you and the GR team give this (and so many other games!) a fair shake and are honest about your experience without being openly hostile about it. It's very refreshing and very appreciated! I'm one of the folks looking forward to this despite some of the criticism. There are some things I know I won't like, and some I'm really intrigued by. Your comments on the city and the world within the game, the time and energy and uniqueness of it - these things are a big factor in why I play games so I'm eager just to experience that alone. And it seems like, with a lot of games that have come out recently, it just seems to be a bit of a mechanical mess. Not quite sure what it wants to accomplish. I hope that WB leadership gives the team the opportunity to refine this into a much greater experience in the long term.
i definitely feel like they will refine the combat eventually, that's the only thing that I think is kind of lacking but other than that i like the game it looks fun asf
FYI the movement abilities are very much something you can grind out. You can complete the tasks necessary back to back. It didn't take long in my opinion. The only subjectively lengthy part is the 10 Premeditated crimes you have to do. You can only do set amount per night but you can just go to the Belfry and go to the next day. It's not hard or time gated. As for the combat, I think it's the perfect speed. Yeah you aren't breaking the sound barrier like you did with the Arkham games but even with Red Hood you can fight fast. His pistols have more speed than his melee attacks and you can even fire off rapid well timed shots. The game definitely gives you the tools to play and feel powerful.
You know, I actually liked Arkham Origins and the New Years story DLC. I mention that because this was apparently developed by the same team. So I'll probably like this one too, though I might get it later depending on if any story DLC is announced.

The story is utter garbage. it's the game ... where when Batman is halucinating... his halucinations tell him "you're no hero". I legit lost it put the controller down and laughed in my palms. How can someone miss the point of Batman so... so much. 3. The bugs. ALl the.. buggs. 4. Nobody told Troy Baker that doing an impression of Mark Hammil's joker... will always be that: an impression. So instead of doing his own thing and actualy having it's own identity, it's discount Hamil. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. 5. You tell your Joker voice actor do to an impression of Hammil, but you make Batman sound like an angry edgelord from the 2000s Origins was a mess. It's still to this day, a god damn mess.
Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad were absolutely planned to be multiplayer live service games, a la Marvel's Avengers. Then Marvel's Avengers came out and killed that idea. That's why Suicide Squad got delayed into oblivion and this game came out as a half-baked mess.
I appreciate the honest review. I'll still probably be picking this up because a lot of the more grindy elements is something I enjoy in RPGs. I know others might not be interested in this game but I think I'm going to really enjoy it. I hope they fix some of the performance issues as though.

Got it on sale. I've played six night patrols, rotating through the characters. I've had several complete crashes and two virtual freeze ups in battles, the latter particularly when several enemies are targeting me with Molotov cocktails. Despite the technical issues, overall I'm enjoying it, I don't mind the slow pace of stalking enemies and picking them off one by one where possible, stealth is my favorite game mechanic. GThey may have reduce the requirements to open up knighthood, for me it's been a training mission in the Belfry, plus 4 pre-meditate crimes and 4 or 5 of the big shield guys. Turned on Ray Tracing and didn't notice any difference. I've failed disarming the kidnapped victim bombs twice out of two attempts so far, despite it being marked and a very easy mission.

across all the reviews and previews I have watched, I'm gathering that it's solid if not unspectacular. Not everything is going to be a groundbreaking masterpiece and I think gamers forget that a lot.
Well, i think it's great! Sure there are issues, but the characters,story,and the combat [eventually] are so cool! I like that they made a new Batman style game,even if it is in a different universe! Now they can focus on improvements!
Thanks for another great review! I had a feeling that this game would be somewhat bareboned when I saw the gameplay reveal. I didn't feel like it really tried to impress me in any way. I'm gonna sit back and wait, maybe one day it will be an even better game, at a discount.
I think it’s great. Put about 20 hours into it since Friday and I’ve done a ton of side missions and only 3-4 of the main missions. Not sure why it’s getting so much hate. It’s similar to arkham except there’s no counter button by pressing Y/Triangle. You can do counter strikes by dodging at the last second and attacking, you’ll know you’ve done it when they pop up in the air, you can also press attack again right when connecting with the enemy to pull off better, stronger attacks that are highlighted in yellow. It has a pretty good combat system and each of the characters can learn a variety of new moves. I’m a big Red Hood fan but I’m loving playing Robin and Nightwing. Haven’t used Batgirl yet to see what she can do. The outfits look great and you can tweak them to make them look to your taste by changing the mask, emblem, gloves and boots. The open world is similar to PS Spider-man. There’s random crimes all over the city with base style missions sprinkled in. Some can be tense like the bomb hostages. If you’re spotted trying to free the hostages and defuse the bombs, the enemies are going to blow the hostages up. The Gotham City PD storms buildings after these types of missions, so you want to leave fast or you’ll have an aggressive swat team on you fast. It’s a really good game that doesn’t deserve the 5/10s it’s getting. I’d give it an 8/10. I wouldn’t still be playing the game if I thought it was trash, I’d just accept the loss and move on to something else.
This. I'm a cynical gaming vet, and this shit is a fun, well-rounded super hero game. I don't even like hero stuff all that much, and here I am enjoying Gotham Knights enough to dump a weekend into it with my brother. People decide to mob-mentality cancel games before they even have a chance.

@@cogd1599 well I’m max level and at the endgame. It doesn’t even take that long to get to the point where you can reliably make that judgement. Also coop doesn’t fix the games problems, it just makes it more tolerable because you have a friend. Every mediocre game is more enjoyable with coop because you’re playing with friends
I’ve been looking forward to hearing your opinions on this game. I was, like you, excited for this game when I heard it announced. And every piece of news since has made the smile fade a little more. I loved the Arkham series and was definitely predisposed to liking a new batman game. But it does seem like it missed the mark
I was initially excited especially when I heard Court of Owls being the main villains, but then the more I thought about it the more my hype died. I could see this getting very repetitive quickly and feeling empty, especially since it doesn’t use the Arkham combat mechanics or story telling. If they could go back to Arkham City and then build an open world with Co-Op off that, I think we’d have a stellar game.
I've been hyped for this game since its announcement for one reason alone: finally playing as an accurate portrayal of these characters, particularly Tim Drake. And well-told story, whether predictable or not. Everything else is just gravy. And their Gotham seems the most authentic yet. I roll my eyes at the glowy treasure chests, the whole loot implementation (and thus inevitably bogging down good elements with repetitiveness) has been looking meh to me, and the demo videos put an already semi-expected damper on stealth hopes. But the combat has been looking fine enough to me, I don't care for any of the Heroic Traversals and plan on avoiding them for as long/much as I can, meaning I'm totally fine with just driving and grappling everywhere (as they do in the source material), and as I'm maining Robin versus the Court of Owls and then some, I think I'll get enough stealth out of this game. (Red Hood vs. Harley, Batgirl vs. Freeze, and Nightwing vs. Clayface.)
I wish it had a "Nemesis System" like Shadow of Mordor cause it was kinda similar and I think it would be more fun with different communication with the enemy

I want to make a few points 1. This game looks decent, but it's missing that finesse that Rocksteady presented in the Arkham Series 2. Jake Baldino could be a better Dick Grayson, I'm just saying 3. I'm surprised that KK and Alexios are in Gotham Knights 4. This pisses me off the most, where is the JOKER? More importantly where's Mark Hamill?! I mean yes he could be dead but come on! I still want to see the Joker! Batman may be dead but it doesn't mean that we still don't see him in the game!

Do you really think so? Mad Max was so unique between Max and the car (I forget the name in ashamed) the game felt like two ridiculously expansive games in one.
Everything is subjective, regardless of what the majority says (most just parrot popular reviewers without playing the game anyway). unless a game is totally unplayable due to game breaking bugs then it’s never really bad.
Man I had bought this game with my friend who is obsessed with Batman and my favorite hero is Nightwing. To know these characters were getting the spotlight was awesome. We wanted to co-op with Redhood and Nightwing. A year later and we never finished it. We stopped because the game was terrible. The fighting is so slow and didnt flow well at all. Each move didnt compliment or flow into the next. A punch followed by a abrupt back flip kick, then a spin and punch. The combat was so random. The button layout for combat was just un-appealing to me. You can't counter, just dodge, and the dodging was so repetitive. Nightwing and Redhood were way too buff for my taste. I just could not get passed their Physique, they looked like gorillas. Graysons face looked like prince charming in Shrek, where as Todd looked like Ray liotta. The city was empty, dull and un-exciting. The traveling was just boring. The bikes appearing from being cloaked when you call them is just lazy. My friend tried to get back into it to maybe finish the game but just couldn't. The sad part is, thats it.. the game was made. No one is gonna touch this idea now. It had potential so much potential. It was an exciting game trailer everyone saw and was excited for and now its a disappointing memory that everyone will forget.

Reason why it's not 60 fps because the development team listened to us saying we wanted co op since Batman Arkham Knight didn't have that ability. I got the game a couple nights ago and I love it so far! There's a ton to do, grinning side missions while I repetitive I really enjoy! I really respect your review like all your reviews. I definitely understand the dislikes you have which some of the minor ones are ones I'm fine with in games I only hope this game gets updates. Because on console it's only 30fps and there's online issues and stuttering. I believe if they're not keen on charging or over charging this game has a lot of potential. We could basically just keep getting Arkham City/Knight Quality cut scenes, bosses and battles. I believe it mainly needs to be enjoyed as online rpg
I've been hearing about the problems with this game but as soon as he compared it to Avengers that sealed it for me. I absolutely loved all of the Arkham games and wanted so badly to love this game too but it sounds like a big let down at the end of the day. Thank you for your honest review Jake. You saved me some money and disappointment. On the plus side, it will probably be in the PS Plus library a lot sooner the expected. I certainly will play it then.
Despite the negative reviews, I’m definitely going to play the game. There are not many times I agree with reviewers about games. I just wanted to play as Red Hood and by damn I’m gonna do it.
That's fair enough as it's always worth bearing in mind that reviews are nothing more than personal opinion (when they're honest). You may enjoy it or get enough value out of it for the cost.
I feel like Gotham Knights is a pretty good video game that will provide you quite solid entertainment, but the main problem is, it just could have been way better. It will give you some fun, maybe even a lot of it, if you don't put your hopes up too high. It just has many details, that could have been done better, what makes a huge difference in the bigger picture. That's why comparison to The Avengers was so accurate.
Got this game with my younger brother (we’re playing Batgirl & Robin) and i got to say im really enjoying it so far, the repetitive grinding world events havnt bothered me as much as I thought they would as i feel this game needs to be played with a friend and it’s ultimately just good crack so no matter how many reviews you watch shitting on this i feel everyone should give it a go if your into super hero games 😊
I'm not even into superhero games, but this one actually kinda grabs my attention, i don't know why. Kinda bit disappointing after hearing all the backlash that it's been getting. It looks like it had a lot of potential, but the execution maybe just isn't there. May pick it up sometime in the future on a big sale.

Those first few hours are rough but once you reach level 30/40 and complete the campaign you get to experiment with different elemental effects, mods, and Gear at Epic Rarity or higher my only pet peeve is that the common crimnals are bit too good to hold their own against crime fighters trained by batman leaving you with this underwheliming feeling at the start of the game but its worth it escpecially running around Gotham with a +1

Had a lot of fun with this game. It isn't groundbreaking by any means but it is fun and consistently fun at that. Of course I have always enjoyed farming so it fits me well. But once the player begins to see how (surprisingly) intelligent the gear/element system is then they may see the game differently during end game "Very Hard" encounters.
Cool story.....Arkham was also a SP game and Gotham Knights is an open world co-op game with a lot more going on, combined with the untethered co-op giving 2 players the freedom to be any distance from each other on the map......

Got it early because retail pros and my goodness the game is fun. I’m playing Robin but it’s so much fun dude I see no performance issues either, I think the update recently they dropped for ps5 helped with the frame dips because I’m not going through it. The only pet peeve is the slow motorcycle other then that this game is a gem
The levelling up and gear unlocking system reminds me of Outriders. I think AK went through a number of huge changes throughout development, like it was supposed to be online-multiplayer for four players (would make the grind, unlockables and progression pace make a lot more sense). I have played Batman games for the past 30 odd years and this isn't the Arkham series but I enjoy it for what it is and hope they add to it. It's kinda like Cyberpunk 2077 incomplete on release but not complete crap.
Can always count on GameRanx to give the most honest reviews of all these games. Jake is a person who likes to like things and find the good in them and I admire that. Even when these games aren’t good he has a positive thing to say.

Nah, i’m getting it. After seing countless of gameplay vids, i’m sold, idc what anybody or these so called “review” sites say. This is basically Arkham Knight(without me..i mean Batman), with rpg elements. And yes im aware of the 30fps, but i played so many 30fps games on the ps4. When you make a next gen only game people expect next gen performance and visuals and this game does not offer those features. While I do agree that some of the negativity surrounding this game feels forced at times, I do believe that most of the criticism surrounding the game is valid.
That’s what I like about “Before you Buy”. Man was honest about what he didn’t like, but had so many positives to share. I’m glad I watched this. I was just gifted a PS Store card and Gotham Knights is on Holiday Discount, but I don’t think I’ll be going for this. I just started Sonic Frontiers today, which is also open-world and grind-y. I’m having a fun time with it, but I don’t need two of those kinds of games at once right now.

Superhero games have been a bummer for me lately as an Xbox player between Avengers and it seems like possibly this...But like I said, still excited to jump in. Only flaw I have seen people complain about is it not even holding a stable 30FPS, but yes the game is definitely savable with a Day 1 patch. I just hope they listen to the community and do the right thing.
To be super fair, with all our criticisms of live service games, this game is great, all things but like 8 costumes are unlockable with medium work, the story is well done, the lack of riddler trophies was a relief, and the bat cycle was better utilized than the batmobile. Given rocksteady’s downfall with ssktjl this game was awesome, maybe im biased because i just replayed all the arkham games (origins-knight) then ssktjl, and then gotham knights, but GK felt like the proper sequel to the arkhamverse.
Despite the bad reviews I’m holding out so hard for this game. I want it to be good so incredibly bad. I already bought the game- preordered the deluxe edition. My standards are not super high honestly for this type of game so I’m gonna be heartbroken if I don’t like this game.
I personally love the game. And everything about it. I do see a TON more potential with this one, and a few things the devs can improve on, like the combat mechanics, as you said in your review. Also, I feel like the Batcycle is too slow.. I always feel like I'm going at a snail's pace rather than as fast as a high tech, futuristic motorcycle should go. Thats another thing. Other than gliding, grappling and the Batcycle there's really only 4 ways of transport through Gotham City. The 4th one being fast traveling. Which can be extremely helpful, but its also only in specific locations. There's a lot the devs can improve on, but all in all, its a pretty solid game.
me personally i love checklist style side activities where i can just go to a location and do the thing... i always lose interest in side stuff where you have to explore and discover stuff

I tend to agree as there are a lot of elements in the UI, progression, cosmetics, currencies, etc that don't make much sense in a purely story-driven game, but are right at home in a live service game.

Game prices are the same, particularly with inflation taken into account, in some cases even cheaper when it is. Not to mention game development is 100x more complex than it was 20 years ago, oh and it is literally impossible to guarantee something will be good despite intentions or work put into it, that's just basic reality otherwise everything would be fantastic. Get a clue.

I'm going to wait till the GotY edition crops up on a WB sale in the game store that includes pre order bonuses. They did the same thing for the arkham games, (got Archambault knight GotY for $5, inuding Harley Quinn pre order mission). Not because I'm conservative in my spending, but the game just doesn't seem worth it in price atm. Especially at the locked 30 fps. I never had an issue with 30fps, but after being spoiled with current Gen updates with performance modes, yeah I get the PC guys' argument on frame rates, ots a big deal.

man, I really wanted (needed) this game to be good. We don't get co-op games like this very often and this had a lot of potential to be super entertaining. I feel like messes like these where technically unpolished games are released are starting to become quite common.

To be fair to it, I think the co-op mode should add some value to GK if that’s the main way you intend to play it. It may not make the game less grindy but playing with friends might make the grind a sort of turn your brain off kind of fun.

Honestly from what I’ve seen, the game isn’t bad, my major problem is the general speed of the game. Like you said, everything feels so slow I actively sped up a watch through to 1.5 on TH-cam and it felt better. The traversal especially using their vehicles just doesn’t feel rewarding.

I went ahead and bought the game without looking at really any reviews and after about 4 hours I’m having a good time. It’s kinda weird having no Batman but out of every one, Barbara Gordon batgirl is my other favorite bat person so I’m sticking with her for this play through. I just decided it’s been a long time since I’ve had a Batman game and I’m not getting any younger. So far it’s a pretty good time. I’m really here for the story and don’t have a laundry list of needs and wants. The video gameyness is an adjustment compared to Arkham but so far I’m pretty satisfied with my purchase

This game would be cooler if you could bring one of the characters to help you, and you can switch between them. Like imagine nightwing and red hood, you could be nightwing fighting someone, and then you switch to red hood to teleport and give support. This could also help with the grind and give xp to both characters.

What I hated the most is the difficulty setting. I always play game on the hardest setting and with this game, it wasn’t hard, it was just longer. Mobs felt like sponge with HP cranked up like crazy. Near the end of the game it’s super annoying with a certain type of mob too.
Medium difficulty could take me 3minutes for a fight
While the same fight at high difficulty could take 10-12minutes. It’s ridiculous
Theres a lot of games like that, thats why i often play on easy even, just because i dont feel like button mashing for hours on end. Especially if i just wanna relax or enjoy the story more.

It seems kinda odd they went with a slower combat pace than the Arkham titles. I feel like the fluidity of movement was a key selling point of the previous entries, only to be stripped away in favor of slower pacing that seems to do more harm than good.

Honestly I don't mind the slower combat, to me it feels like it adds a tad bit of realism to the game. I agree it was fun in the Arkham games fighting enemies all around the room and hitting them from distance but honestly I think the combat in GK would be more life like. Idk just my opinion because in real life a person would be fighting at similar speeds as the characters in GK.

Really appreciated how genuine and honest you are in this video. I will say that I’ve pretty much agreed with all your opinions so far, but I’m feeling the exact opposite. I was eagerly anticipating the game and so far, it’s been exceeding my expectations. I’m having a blast. (Maybe it’s different because I’ve been playing it only in co-op.)

The combat is kinda like each character is a different genre of music and their movesets are the different instruments, their gameplay feels better (not as good as arkham series) when you find the rhythm as you finesse from enemy to enemy.
After playing for a few hours it’s crazy how spot on Jake is with this review. Good bones here but they could of done so much more. I think dropping the weird crafting feature and having an adversary system similar to shadow of Mordor to get loot would of been so much better. Also, why do I start the game with 7 Medkits?? There was never an area I felt challenged so you don’t really ever feel like you’re improving.
I think you get seven to incentivise players to stay out longer between trips to the Belfrey, especially before the big enemies start spawning in more frequently and providing a more reliable supply of health packs.
What difficulty were u playing on cause for me 7 wasn’t enough lol. I had to switch the difficulty from hard to medium to beat that triple phase boss fight in the Harley Quinn arc cause they were just ranking hits and I would be getting basically one hit. I like the challenge but after 5 attempts I was pretty frustrated cause I had to use med kits in the boss fights prior so I was left with 1. Btw medium difficulty is a crazy difference from hard. Idk if I’m just bad at the game due to the first day playing but man I felt like I was a god on medium.
The shadow of mordor system was copyrighted so nobody but ea can use it

There's plenty of things the spiderman game does better purely because of the nature of spiderman, such as web swinging being a much more interesting traversal method that Batman's catapult and glide, but there's plenty Arkham Knight does better as well, namely the combat and stealth.

it's a small thing but in the Arkham's when you build the combo meter then can perform a 1 hit take down is really rewarding. It forces the player to be in the fight and dodge/pary all the time

I'm one of the folks looking forward to this despite some of the criticism. There are some things I know I won't like, and some I'm really intrigued by. Your comments on the city and the world within the game, the time and energy and uniqueness of it - these things are a big factor in why I play games so I'm eager just to experience that alone.
And it seems like, with a lot of games that have come out recently, it just seems to be a bit of a mechanical mess. Not quite sure what it wants to accomplish. I hope that WB leadership gives the team the opportunity to refine this into a much greater experience in the long term.

As you, I find this game appealing in some ways,
which are usually the ones why others think otherly.
FYI the movement abilities are very much something you can grind out. You can complete the tasks necessary back to back. It didn't take long in my opinion. The only subjectively lengthy part is the 10 Premeditated crimes you have to do. You can only do set amount per night but you can just go to the Belfry and go to the next day. It's not hard or time gated. As for the combat, I think it's the perfect speed. Yeah you aren't breaking the sound barrier like you did with the Arkham games but even with Red Hood you can fight fast. His pistols have more speed than his melee attacks and you can even fire off rapid well timed shots. The game definitely gives you the tools to play and feel powerful.
You know, I actually liked Arkham Origins and the New Years story DLC. I mention that because this was apparently developed by the same team. So I'll probably like this one too, though I might get it later depending on if any story DLC is announced.

4. Nobody told Troy Baker that doing an impression of Mark Hammil's joker... will always be that: an impression. So instead of doing his own thing and actualy having it's own identity, it's discount Hamil. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
5. You tell your Joker voice actor do to an impression of Hammil, but you make Batman sound like an angry edgelord from the 2000s
Origins was a mess. It's still to this day, a god damn mess.
Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad were absolutely planned to be multiplayer live service games, a la Marvel's Avengers. Then Marvel's Avengers came out and killed that idea. That's why Suicide Squad got delayed into oblivion and this game came out as a half-baked mess.
I appreciate the honest review. I'll still probably be picking this up because a lot of the more grindy elements is something I enjoy in RPGs. I know others might not be interested in this game but I think I'm going to really enjoy it. I hope they fix some of the performance issues as though.

Got it on sale. I've played six night patrols, rotating through the characters. I've had several complete crashes and two virtual freeze ups in battles, the latter particularly when several enemies are targeting me with Molotov cocktails.
Despite the technical issues, overall I'm enjoying it, I don't mind the slow pace of stalking enemies and picking them off one by one where possible, stealth is my favorite game mechanic. GThey may have reduce the requirements to open up knighthood, for me it's been a training mission in the Belfry, plus 4 pre-meditate crimes and 4 or 5 of the big shield guys.
Turned on Ray Tracing and didn't notice any difference.
I've failed disarming the kidnapped victim bombs twice out of two attempts so far, despite it being marked and a very easy mission.
Thanks for this video, youre the only guys I trust when it comes to video games. I already pre purchased the game because all I want is a decent nightwing game.

I think it’s great. Put about 20 hours into it since Friday and I’ve done a ton of side missions and only 3-4 of the main missions. Not sure why it’s getting so much hate. It’s similar to arkham except there’s no counter button by pressing Y/Triangle. You can do counter strikes by dodging at the last second and attacking, you’ll know you’ve done it when they pop up in the air, you can also press attack again right when connecting with the enemy to pull off better, stronger attacks that are highlighted in yellow. It has a pretty good combat system and each of the characters can learn a variety of new moves.
I’m a big Red Hood fan but I’m loving playing Robin and Nightwing. Haven’t used Batgirl yet to see what she can do.
The outfits look great and you can tweak them to make them look to your taste by changing the mask, emblem, gloves and boots.
The open world is similar to PS Spider-man. There’s random crimes all over the city with base style missions sprinkled in. Some can be tense like the bomb hostages. If you’re spotted trying to free the hostages and defuse the bombs, the enemies are going to blow the hostages up. The Gotham City PD storms buildings after these types of missions, so you want to leave fast or you’ll have an aggressive swat team on you fast.
It’s a really good game that doesn’t deserve the 5/10s it’s getting. I’d give it an 8/10. I wouldn’t still be playing the game if I thought it was trash, I’d just accept the loss and move on to something else.
This. I'm a cynical gaming vet, and this shit is a fun, well-rounded super hero game. I don't even like hero stuff all that much, and here I am enjoying Gotham Knights enough to dump a weekend into it with my brother. People decide to mob-mentality cancel games before they even have a chance.

Also coop doesn’t fix the games problems, it just makes it more tolerable because you have a friend. Every mediocre game is more enjoyable with coop because you’re playing with friends

I loved the Arkham series and was definitely predisposed to liking a new batman game. But it does seem like it missed the mark

From the looks of this review, it looks like GK is just Batman Arkham but done worse in nearly every respect.
I was initially excited especially when I heard Court of Owls being the main villains, but then the more I thought about it the more my hype died. I could see this getting very repetitive quickly and feeling empty, especially since it doesn’t use the Arkham combat mechanics or story telling. If they could go back to Arkham City and then build an open world with Co-Op off that, I think we’d have a stellar game.
I've been hyped for this game since its announcement for one reason alone: finally playing as an accurate portrayal of these characters, particularly Tim Drake. And well-told story, whether predictable or not. Everything else is just gravy. And their Gotham seems the most authentic yet. I roll my eyes at the glowy treasure chests, the whole loot implementation (and thus inevitably bogging down good elements with repetitiveness) has been looking meh to me, and the demo videos put an already semi-expected damper on stealth hopes. But the combat has been looking fine enough to me, I don't care for any of the Heroic Traversals and plan on avoiding them for as long/much as I can, meaning I'm totally fine with just driving and grappling everywhere (as they do in the source material), and as I'm maining Robin versus the Court of Owls and then some, I think I'll get enough stealth out of this game. (Red Hood vs. Harley, Batgirl vs. Freeze, and Nightwing vs. Clayface.)
You don't even have to use the Heroic Traversals but I do enjoy having them around ngl. Love the game, easily a 9/10 personally for me

1. This game looks decent, but it's missing that finesse that Rocksteady presented in the Arkham Series

I actually am enjoying it it obviously has its flaws but reminds me alot of mad Max the way the combat feels heavy and impactful and it's fun to run about the city solving crimes

Man I had bought this game with my friend who is obsessed with Batman and my favorite hero is Nightwing. To know these characters were getting the spotlight was awesome. We wanted to co-op with Redhood and Nightwing. A year later and we never finished it. We stopped because the game was terrible. The fighting is so slow and didnt flow well at all. Each move didnt compliment or flow into the next. A punch followed by a abrupt back flip kick, then a spin and punch. The combat was so random. The button layout for combat was just un-appealing to me. You can't counter, just dodge, and the dodging was so repetitive. Nightwing and Redhood were way too buff for my taste. I just could not get passed their Physique, they looked like gorillas. Graysons face looked like prince charming in Shrek, where as Todd looked like Ray liotta. The city was empty, dull and un-exciting. The traveling was just boring. The bikes appearing from being cloaked when you call them is just lazy. My friend tried to get back into it to maybe finish the game but just couldn't. The sad part is, thats it.. the game was made. No one is gonna touch this idea now. It had potential so much potential. It was an exciting game trailer everyone saw and was excited for and now its a disappointing memory that everyone will forget.

Reason why it's not 60 fps because the development team listened to us saying we wanted co op since Batman Arkham Knight didn't have that ability. Therefore, they made it happen but it came with a sacrifice which was the 30 fps situation. People these days like to complayne not complain. The complayne person is a gamer who seriously complain about the game the entire time before they buy it or before it releases and still buy it! Our generation want they cake and eat it too lol but life doesn't work that way.

I got the game a couple nights ago and I love it so far! There's a ton to do, grinning side missions while I repetitive I really enjoy! I really respect your review like all your reviews. I definitely understand the dislikes you have which some of the minor ones are ones I'm fine with in games I only hope this game gets updates. Because on console it's only 30fps and there's online issues and stuttering. I believe if they're not keen on charging or over charging this game has a lot of potential. We could basically just keep getting Arkham City/Knight Quality cut scenes, bosses and battles. I believe it mainly needs to be enjoyed as online rpg
I've been hearing about the problems with this game but as soon as he compared it to Avengers that sealed it for me. I absolutely loved all of the Arkham games and wanted so badly to love this game too but it sounds like a big let down at the end of the day. Thank you for your honest review Jake. You saved me some money and disappointment. On the plus side, it will probably be in the PS Plus library a lot sooner the expected. I certainly will play it then.

I feel like Gotham Knights is a pretty good video game that will provide you quite solid entertainment, but the main problem is, it just could have been way better. It will give you some fun, maybe even a lot of it, if you don't put your hopes up too high. It just has many details, that could have been done better, what makes a huge difference in the bigger picture. That's why comparison to The Avengers was so accurate.
Got this game with my younger brother (we’re playing Batgirl & Robin) and i got to say im really enjoying it so far, the repetitive grinding world events havnt bothered me as much as I thought they would as i feel this game needs to be played with a friend and it’s ultimately just good crack so no matter how many reviews you watch shitting on this i feel everyone should give it a go if your into super hero games 😊

Man your so spot on with your review I thought it was boring and I just hate having to grind so much for each character it just felt like unnecessary work but not a bad game just not great
But for 60 bucks no body wants not great AAA game

@@PoutingScout Literally anyone who isn't one of those "special" people who are a cancer to gaming are perfectly fine with games being good but not great....Not every game needs to be amazing, People who think they need to "try or buy" every game that comes out instead of just what interests them are generally trash people who are more of a cancer to gaming than anything else...The kind of trash imbeciles who call a game trash if it gets anything under an 8.5.....
Those first few hours are rough but once you reach level 30/40 and complete the campaign you get to experiment with different elemental effects, mods, and Gear at Epic Rarity or higher my only pet peeve is that the common crimnals are bit too good to hold their own against crime fighters trained by batman leaving you with this underwheliming feeling at the start of the game but its worth it escpecially running around Gotham with a +1

Had a lot of fun with this game. It isn't groundbreaking by any means but it is fun and consistently fun at that. Of course I have always enjoyed farming so it fits me well. But once the player begins to see how (surprisingly) intelligent the gear/element system is then they may see the game differently during end game "Very Hard" encounters.
Anytime i see gameplay of them running or gliding around the city I just think how much better and visually striking Arkham knight looked
Camera angle can do alot. This game was supposed to be a live service mmorpg (read grind)
Cool story.....Arkham was also a SP game and Gotham Knights is an open world co-op game with a lot more going on, combined with the untethered co-op giving 2 players the freedom to be any distance from each other on the map......

Got it early because retail pros and my goodness the game is fun. I’m playing Robin but it’s so much fun dude I see no performance issues either, I think the update recently they dropped for ps5 helped with the frame dips because I’m not going through it. The only pet peeve is the slow motorcycle other then that this game is a gem
The levelling up and gear unlocking system reminds me of Outriders. I think AK went through a number of huge changes throughout development, like it was supposed to be online-multiplayer for four players (would make the grind, unlockables and progression pace make a lot more sense). I have played Batman games for the past 30 odd years and this isn't the Arkham series but I enjoy it for what it is and hope they add to it.
It's kinda like Cyberpunk 2077 incomplete on release but not complete crap.
Can always count on GameRanx to give the most honest reviews of all these games. Jake is a person who likes to like things and find the good in them and I admire that. Even when these games aren’t good he has a positive thing to say.

Nah, i’m getting it. After seing countless of gameplay vids, i’m sold, idc what anybody or these so called “review” sites say. This is basically Arkham Knight(without me..i mean Batman), with rpg elements. And yes im aware of the 30fps, but i played so many 30fps games on the ps4. People just want to nitpick everything sheesh.

When you make a next gen only game people expect next gen performance and visuals and this game does not offer those features. While I do agree that some of the negativity surrounding this game feels forced at times, I do believe that most of the criticism surrounding the game is valid.

I’m glad I watched this. I was just gifted a PS Store card and Gotham Knights is on Holiday Discount, but I don’t think I’ll be going for this.
I just started Sonic Frontiers today, which is also open-world and grind-y. I’m having a fun time with it, but I don’t need two of those kinds of games at once right now.
As always, love your videos. I preordered this from Gamestop and I'm still excited to jump in as Redhood and try it out for myself. Superhero games have been a bummer for me lately as an Xbox player between Avengers and it seems like possibly this...But like I said, still excited to jump in. Maybe I can get a buddy to play with me and make the experience more enjoyable!

Do you think this game will improve over time and be worthwhile or are the flaws too big at this point to fix in updates?
I mean all they can do is performance updates, then down the line offer free add ons with new moves and abilitys.
Only flaw I have seen people complain about is it not even holding a stable 30FPS, but yes the game is definitely savable with a Day 1 patch. I just hope they listen to the community and do the right thing.

It looks like the core combat is slow and repetitive. That's not something they'll fix in a update.
To be super fair, with all our criticisms of live service games, this game is great, all things but like 8 costumes are unlockable with medium work, the story is well done, the lack of riddler trophies was a relief, and the bat cycle was better utilized than the batmobile. Given rocksteady’s downfall with ssktjl this game was awesome, maybe im biased because i just replayed all the arkham games (origins-knight) then ssktjl, and then gotham knights, but GK felt like the proper sequel to the arkhamverse.

Despite the bad reviews I’m holding out so hard for this game. I want it to be good so incredibly bad. I already bought the game- preordered the deluxe edition. My standards are not super high honestly for this type of game so I’m gonna be heartbroken if I don’t like this game.

I personally love the game. And everything about it. I do see a TON more potential with this one, and a few things the devs can improve on, like the combat mechanics, as you said in your review. Also, I feel like the Batcycle is too slow.. I always feel like I'm going at a snail's pace rather than as fast as a high tech, futuristic motorcycle should go. Thats another thing. Other than gliding, grappling and the Batcycle there's really only 4 ways of transport through Gotham City. The 4th one being fast traveling. Which can be extremely helpful, but its also only in specific locations. There's a lot the devs can improve on, but all in all, its a pretty solid game.
me personally i love checklist style side activities where i can just go to a location and do the thing... i always lose interest in side stuff where you have to explore and discover stuff
Yeah that's a problem with you not games. If you want checklists go open an excel sheet, ENGAGING and ORGANIC activities are far superior always.
