  • The British QF 6-pounder AT Gun was introduced in 1942, joining the lighter 2pdr, the new gun was more capable of dealing with the increasing thickness of Axis armour. The 6pdr first saw action in North Africa and was used throughout the war in Europe and Asia. It also armed a series of British armoured cars, tanks, ships and even aircraft!
    In this video Matt looks at the history, development and use of Britain's second dedicated anti-tank gun.

    There is a theory that any US 57 mm guns which knocked out German tanks in the Battle of the Bulge had managed to get hold of British APDS ammunition. Seems quite reasonable given the performance of other types of ammunition, and the lateness of the battle.

      I recently listened to a book about this operation and some units of US 57 mm guns hid up side streets and destroyed all German armour coming along the main road.

    While the British army didn’t have the kind of armour thickness of the Tigers and Panthers, they were able to offset that by producing excellent anti tank guns allowing them to compete with the German tanks.

      not so much the guns, yes the 17 pdr is clearly more powerfull than its predicessors. But the more powerful guns was the route the germans took with their 128 mm, but for the most part stuck to conventional AP all be it large british improvments largely came from improvements in ammunition, they were the first to really develop sub calabre ammunition, that would eventually lead to APFSDS

    The very reliable "Ivan" Hogg states that there was a high explosive shell for the 2-pdr, "shell 2T, H.E." but it was seldom issued due to its modest charge. Enjoyed your video very much.

    The 6pdr. was also used in a twin mount on some coastal artilley locations. According to the late Ian V. Hogg, a good crew could achieve a rate of fire of over 100 rounds a minute - ! 😮

    Great video. I do have a question, when they bored out the 6pdr to make the 75mm they apparently shortened the barrel. Was this the reason the 75mm had less penetration, and if so why shorten it?
    Thanks.

    • @DavidOfWhitehills
      @DavidOfWhitehills หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thinner barrel walls would not survive a high velocity charge, so the propellant was greatly reduced. So the longer barrel was unnecessary.
      75mm for a bigger HE burst, armour piercing not so important.
      These are just guesses.
