The theory isn't that he volunteered, it's that he's drafted, which is HIGHLY likely. He'll be prime service age (21), he likely won't be involved in the kind of factory work that would get him exempted, and, additionally, when WWI happened, there was a MASSIVE societal push for men to join the fight, even in 1917, after it had been shown how awful it was. Regardless of his pre existing trauma, he is an angry, isolated young man without a formal education and without a support network, he's practically a stereotypical candidate to be a soldier. Jack Marston very easily could fit into a Jimmy Darmody or Spencer Dutton type niche. Though a more redeeming character archetype might be something like a Young Indiana Jones, fight in the war but then go off to college.
I think part of the reason jack is so “unbothered” about getting kidnapped by Brontë reflects the detached attachment style brought up by inconsistent parenting. He’s thrown from one member of the gang to another, without ever developing a strong bond with one or two parental figures. Great video keep it up :)
Great note. Plus, the gang feels like it's always growing so it's not as though he's always around a consistent group of trusted adults. It's changing, and many cannot be trusted.

I think you can see Jacks lack of purpose in his interactions with the world around him in RDR. High honour Jack is a depressed and with no purpose, low honour Jack behaves similar to Micah, which he only had negative interactions wirh him.

jack wasn’t a good shot when we saw him last, meaning after his father’s death, he spent those three years dedicated to training to kill edgar ross and repeat the cycle. jack marston is one of the most tragic characters i’ve seen. i loved the video sm, your deep dives are amazing!
I believe he genuinely wanted to protect his mother, the last thing he had in the world that mattered to him at that point. After her death, Jack does not have anything to lose, he is a man that does not hold anything dear, maybe not even himself. And so he decides to kill the guy who took everything from him, despite that being the thing that the people he held dear, fought to make him not do(I am trying to say that Jack did the opposite from what Arthur,John,Abigail wanted him to, but with nothing else to do and a resent for Ross, he does it anyway)

Personally I don’t see anything inherently wrong with a small child being curious about bones even human ones. I think it’s more morbid knowing the origins of the skulls and how they’re the victims of the murderous rapist cannibalistic inbred gang who used to live there. I personally always thought Abigail just straight up killed herself. Her husband was killed, her child became everything she, John, Arthur and most of the people in the gang did everything that they tried to not be, she probably had very little friends, and remember that John wasn't the only one killed at the raid of beecher hope, so was uncle, who I always saw as a sort of paternal figure to John and Abigail, which I'm sure took a huge toll on her alongside John's death. I think she just straight up gave up on life.

Him asking about Uncle Dutch makes me sorta sad. He essentially lost all of his extended family and loved ones. Even though he’s seems to have forgotten bits and pieces of his upbringing. He still remembers the kindness of people like Arthur and Dutch. A truly amazing game series.

I could! In short, though, Arthur's described as a bad drunk by a few, and they seem to raise brows to his drinking habits at times. John makes an express mention of stopping drinking, as he spends a lot of the first chapters of rdr2 drunk at camp.

John mentions in the first game that he had a daughter that died so I’m guessing this happened between 1907-1910 and at the end of rdr2 once the world opens back up and becomes less structured I always interpreted that as John going back to his rambling ways and playing family man and farmer when it suits him and could also explain why Abigail feared he’d fall back in with his old gang members when we first met her in rdr1 but going back to the main point I think John wasn’t home when his daughter died and jack could also hold resentment towards John for that.
Honestly I’m thinking the daughter thing happened before Jack was born. Perhaps this is what triggers John’s year long absence from the gang that Arthur holds a grudge against? John did never explain why, and this seems intentional since we see Arthur sorta confront him about it(or do we? idk). It would also help explain why exactly John is so hesitant about accepting Jack as his son; he doesn’t want to experience the pain of losing another child.

My dad managed it, but he also got pneumonia pretty much each winter until he left the Yukon when he was five, and it was probably much tougher to treat pneumonia back in the early 1900s.
I never stopped to think about just how traumatizing having all of those people coming and going from your 'family' constantly growing up would be for Jack. And I agree about the memory lapses relating to his trauma. My whole life is a blur. I vaguely remember the bullet points.... Well, some of them. Its terrible. I have cptsd. The worse the time, the foggier the recollection. Its mostly just a blurry photo album of random images, not really a full memory of people and events. I'm always amazed by people who tell countless detailed stories from their past. I can barely give you a summary.
its a small not really canon interaction, but at the beginning of Undead Nightmare Jack actually seems pretty well adjusted and easy going around his mom and dad, cracking good natured sarcasm, and being excited to share his hobby of reading with John, so much so John seems to have a pause that shows how happy he is to see Jack being happy. That does however give me the impression that might actually be a timeline event, as at that moment jack was talking about the undead curse in the book he read so that moment of pause from John could represent him daydreaming into the events of Undead Nightmare. So before then, that could've been a misc day in the life before the day Ross raided the place and killed John.
there’s a theory undead nightmare is a portrayal of john’s inner anxiety and guilt . he might see that briefly ideal version of his family as something he takes away and ruins.

I feel there is a darkly tragic way in how Jack comes to adopt much of the ideology of Dutch. It’s a very generational trauma style of seeing the world that is passed from Dutch to John and then down to jack and I think it’s a good way to summarize the traumatic underpinnings of why these characters act the way they do. Dutch and his ideology are unique not in content but in how they personalize responsibility in an unhealthy way I feel. You touched on it in the John video but I feel it might be worth expanding on that these characters hold a sick worldview which ultimately pushes them into dramatic and incredibly dangerous confrontation with anyone who wronged them even slightly. The narcissistic excuses of Dutch flowing down the generational line to justify trauma both experienced and inflicted

As someone with major trauma and depression seeing jack act certain ways i can see that in myself i mean i barely remember anything from when i was younger because my trauma blocks its out. But they can come back with that ptsd like what happened to him when john shot those 3 guys and how jack was acting because of it.
I get emotional flashbacks, as in id get triggered and then just lose control... Doesn't happen often (thank God) but its followed by perpetual emptiness in daily life afterwards , and the memory paet does suck, just on autopilot most of the time, are you ok right now?

If I could have it my way, it'd be more focused on the prohibition era of america, as i think it very reasonably fits a western theme. I also think that either 1. The government has no record of Jack and can't draft him or 2. I simply feel he was raised a draft dodger lol

I honestly don't know if Jack should be a protagonist again. I feel like maybe we could have a prohibition era RDR3 with machine guns, fast cars and booze and all that, but with a new set of protagonists, with Jack maybe being a background character or something like that
Very interesting idea. I’d personally prefer RDR3 to be a prequel even further back than 1899, maybe like the 1870s right after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. In that period, I’d love to see a setting in the far west, maybe having San Francisco acting as the Saint Denis of the game. There’s definitely a lot to dig into in this period regarding labor struggles, colonization, robber-barons, and of course all that great old Wild West atmosphere. I’m not sure there are too many characters that fit totally neatly into this, but we know that Hosea is from out west, so he could potentially be an important side character. We could also potentially interact with a younger Rains Fall at a time when the Wapiti had more freedom than in the 1890s, or a teenage Arthur fleeing his abusive background. Idk but whatever time and place they choose for the next title, I’m sure it’ll work fantastically. I’m just not personally sure that I’d love a Red Dead game with cars and machine guns, ya know?
This video actually encouraged me to seek therapy again. I relate to Jack too much for it to be healthy. The whole game almost feels like an alegory for my childhood.
My complete headcanon continuation of Jack's life is that he got drafted and served into WW1. While overseas he may and married an Italian woman. They moved to UK where he became very famous as an author writing books based on fictionalized versions of accounts from Arthur's and John's journals as well as his own. He suspected in the murder of Edgar Ross, but since his death happened outside of the US and there were no direct witnesses, nobody could ever pin it on him.
Mine kinda similar, except he dodged the draft, because he refuses to fight for the government who killed his dad, and many other members of his "family", and abducted him and his mother. Eventually, he somehow found his way to Russia in 1917, joined in the revolution, then became an author. Maybe even spent some time in Spain during the civil war there aiding or atleast documenting the efforts of the C.N.T/F.A.I., before returning to wherever he took up residence.
I like to imagine in a sort of what if scenario for a future game following Jack but not necessarily of the Red Dead series, a government guy tracks him down and offers him an ultimatum: either pay for his crimes through execution, or put his sleuthing and gunfighting skills to use in the war as some sort of special operative and be pardoned if by some chance he makes it out alive.
Its so crazy how many different people and stories there are in rdr that you most of the time dont realize exsist in the backround but they put so much work into it and its so cool too realize later how complex the gang is, Great video btw, and your other two!

I honestly don't think I'm the person to make an impartial, empathetic video on Micah. For me, he makes himself a pretty aa pure evil grr type when he attempts to assault Sadie and then throws out a slur like a minute later within the first mission. I get he has depth, and I'm not opposed to talking about him but I feel I'd have to be very careful in how. But I don't think people can expect an unbaised analysis of Micah that won't assert he's the devil.

Come to think of it, Micah is a good villain because his psychological portrait and motivation make sense. He’s an opportunistic survivor and he’s after himself always, and he also knows how to manipulate people for his own gains.
It certainly could but the fact that he lacks much depth, I hesitate to make that assertion as it's not like Dutch where I can point to a decline. For Micah, we don't get much nuance, it's mostly a caricature of what people assume of a lot of cluster B disorders, and I don't want to add to the stigma surrounding already super stigmatized disorders. You feel?

Wonderfully done video! You’ve done a really excellent analysis of the effects of trauma through the lense of CPTSD on the characters of RDR series. I would love to see an RDR3 in a few years that follows Jack and hopefully, his journey to break the chains of generational trauma. Maybe we can all learn a little something from a story like that…
This was well done and a strong start to a channel. I hope you continue to do more deep dives on other RDR characters, particularly Sadie since she seems to be one of the most misunderstood of the bunch(cries of "mary sue" from segments of the fanbase). Anyway, this dive was particularly interesting to me because at times it felt like you were analyzing *me*, though I've been diagnosed with just "regular" PTSD. It's still possible to remember when I was a nice, kind-hearted kid like Jack who turned into a bitter, destructive asshole. It was heartbreaking for me as well. I think this game hits differently for people who...let's just say lived "similar" lives as the characters and are now trying to turn themselves around into good people. It literally had me in my room trying not to loudly bawl because it's like I get to vicariously experience my own redemption. I'm in therapy and I've been working at this for around a decade now, but even though I'm trying to find new meds that work for me AND I'm currently in a deep valley of depression I feel like I've glimpsed the light of a better life before the very notion is so enticing it's worth facing myself and all that pain. As I said, I'm currently in a very bad place due to my illnessess, so sorry if bits of this are a tad incoherent. It's been a little difficult expressing my thoughts lately.
Thank you for this. Jacks not my favorite character.....but part of that is because i feel uncomfortable with how i can relate to him. Did i live in a gang, get kidnapped and witness murder and commit murder? No. But I do actually have cptsd, and dont remember much of my childhood, cause i was constantly uprooted, wasnt allowed to have emotions and had little to no friends, and when I was old enough to start asking questions, I was gaslit alot, which only led to anger, resentment, confusion, eradic behavior as a teen. I think its more than plausable to assume jack has it based on the information and events we see in the game. Thank god i live in current day so mental health help is more readily available. Plot twist: i have friends now and Im even married so I like to think there is some hope for jack marston too. Side note: since were talking jack stuff, i just want to state my opinion on a popular theory of him fighting in WWI. I hate the idea for several reasons, as I think it wouldnt make sense for his character, the pinkertons, and the narrative and western theme in the games series. I think that if ppl really want him to fight in a war (but like, pls dont that to him.) Why not make it make more sense? Like, idk, stick to the north america contenent and see jack flee to mexico and maybe he gets caught up in the mexican revolution(1910-1920, so its still within the time frame of the events of the game)? If ya'll want to see jack get more traumatised so much, can we at least still have it be a western? I dont think anyone would be upset about going back to mexico. Hell, maybe he runs into sadie at some point in south america? He could end the game getting off south america, going to tahiti and living a peaceful life growing mangos 😂 Just my two cents.
This was a really well made insightful video I’ve never heard anyone go into depth before about how the events of both games weigh on jacks psyche. I truly hope one day we’ll learn about jacks fate after rd1 and I hope he found himself someone that loves and accepts him

Havent watched the video yet but i know its going to be good. These are always so informative and get me interested in doing research on psychology again. Rdr2 is my favorite game of all time and the mental states of humans, even in fiction, fascinate me. If this is something you are passionate about (which im assuming you are considering the work you put into these videos) then Id love to see more!
i really don’t want to see jack as a protagonist in another game, because i know that’ll be he’s going to either die or suffer further. he’s just going to endure a whole other portion of his life that is plagued by violence. however, if they ever did do anything for jack, i’d hope it would be something about him settling down and finding purpose in life outside of his fathers legacy. getting married, having children, restoring the ranch, maybe becoming a writer???? anything other than my boy hurting any further. i’d also love to see you touch on jack’s low honor and high honor interactions. i think the way he talks to women in particular is very sad when he’s low honor. it’s also sad to see how violent and reactive he is to just about everything when he’s at a low honor. i wonder what would happen to him canonically if he continued on with the low honor.
even when shooting law enforcements he sometimes says stuff like "im a marston" or "my dad taught me this" or "im gonna make you proud pa", hes most definitely depressed about it all even admitting it by getting mad at a stranger for protesting about closing bars saying he needs bars so he can drown his problems in alcohol

I love your video essays about RDR. Poor Jack, one trauma after another from birth to late teens. Also, there's that moment RDR1 where he and John talk about how Uncle told him about STD's. So he's a teen whose only sex ed info comes from an old drunkard, outlaw and self-described maniac. Great parenting again, John! (I like Uncle, but educator, that he certainly isn't.)
Holy shit okay as someone who has often wondered if I have cptsd, this video is spot on and scarcely reminiscent of my own life. I was never homeless, but I remember my mom telling me how I was such a happy kid and wondering what happened, secluding myself becoming low verbal at times. I remember internalizing fucking everything anyone said about me at a young age, I also started severe self depreciation at 9 maybe 10, so all of that pretty much lines up. My dad was also a lot like Jack because he was often times in and out of my life and he caused more stress and anxiety when he was in the home versus when he was away. I also remember being neglected by both of my parents and having to sit through huge fights between the two of them. One of the things that resonated with me the most is when Jack does not cry with his father died. When my grandmother died I did not cry at all. I remember feeling like an alien compared to everyone around me and worrying that I was a psychopath. During my childhood I was almost always disassociated because of trauma and gender dysphoria. If I were to guess I have probably lived like 50% of my life in depersonalized. I still have basically no identity. I don't even really even see myself as a person. This video probably just convinced me I do have cptsd smh.
Unfortunately, I believe Jack will fall the same fate as the tale of the franchise is that "revenge is a fools game. John broke his promise to Arthur and reaped what he sewed. That killing of Micah gave the government a trail to find him. John sacrifices himself for his family to live free, just as Arthur did, and Jack continued the cycle.. Revenge is met with severe consequence in that franchise n yeah. I wish for a conclusion to his story anyway, as I'd find it to be interesting. But I know we won't as RDR isn't supposed to veer away from the frontier. It's supposed to be a commentary on the industrialization of what was the Wild West. The goodbye to the old world and ways of knowing things. Alas, side tangent, I know. Great video and I think you're touching on a topic I feel like most just glance over. So kudos to shining light on it.
I believe jack became a writer. Because everything in rdr2 story is made out of chapters. Like a book. Also, there are people saying something like "ur gonna end up in a picture of a wild west novel" I just feel like everything points to him becoming a writer at one point

I think you can see Jacks lack of purpose in his interactions with the world around him in RDR. High honour Jack is a depressed and with no purpose, low honour Jack behaves similar to Micah, which he only had negative interactions wirh him.
The way low honor jack speaks to some people actually makes Micah look like a gentleman 😭

Thank you for making this video, the tragedy of Jack Marston's fate has always been something that isn't talked about enough in the RDR community. He suffered so much for sins that weren't his own.
jack wasn’t a good shot when we saw him last, meaning after his father’s death, he spent those three years dedicated to training to kill edgar ross and repeat the cycle. jack marston is one of the most tragic characters i’ve seen. i loved the video sm, your deep dives are amazing!
I believe he genuinely wanted to protect his mother, the last thing he had in the world that mattered to him at that point. After her death, Jack does not have anything to lose, he is a man that does not hold anything dear, maybe not even himself. And so he decides to kill the guy who took everything from him, despite that being the thing that the people he held dear, fought to make him not do(I am trying to say that Jack did the opposite from what Arthur,John,Abigail wanted him to, but with nothing else to do and a resent for Ross, he does it anyway)
He was already a bit of a gunfighter in 1911, fighting off rustlers and the bureau/army

I personally always thought Abigail just straight up killed herself. Her husband was killed, her child became everything she, John, Arthur and most of the people in the gang did everything that they tried to not be, she probably had very little friends, and remember that John wasn't the only one killed at the raid of beecher hope, so was uncle, who I always saw as a sort of paternal figure to John and Abigail, which I'm sure took a huge toll on her alongside John's death. I think she just straight up gave up on life.

I could! In short, though, Arthur's described as a bad drunk by a few, and they seem to raise brows to his drinking habits at times. John makes an express mention of stopping drinking, as he spends a lot of the first chapters of rdr2 drunk at camp.

i honestly would KILL for a spinoff game for every single character in this series, especially RDR2. The writers did such a great job of making every other character feel like the main character in their own story.

John mentions in the first game that he had a daughter that died so I’m guessing this happened between 1907-1910 and at the end of rdr2 once the world opens back up and becomes less structured I always interpreted that as John going back to his rambling ways and playing family man and farmer when it suits him and could also explain why Abigail feared he’d fall back in with his old gang members when we first met her in rdr1 but going back to the main point I think John wasn’t home when his daughter died and jack could also hold resentment towards John for that.
Honestly I’m thinking the daughter thing happened before Jack was born. Perhaps this is what triggers John’s year long absence from the gang that Arthur holds a grudge against? John did never explain why, and this seems intentional since we see Arthur sorta confront him about it(or do we? idk). It would also help explain why exactly John is so hesitant about accepting Jack as his son; he doesn’t want to experience the pain of losing another child.

My dad managed it, but he also got pneumonia pretty much each winter until he left the Yukon when he was five, and it was probably much tougher to treat pneumonia back in the early 1900s.

I never stopped to think about just how traumatizing having all of those people coming and going from your 'family' constantly growing up would be for Jack. And I agree about the memory lapses relating to his trauma. My whole life is a blur. I vaguely remember the bullet points.... Well, some of them. Its terrible. I have cptsd. The worse the time, the foggier the recollection. Its mostly just a blurry photo album of random images, not really a full memory of people and events. I'm always amazed by people who tell countless detailed stories from their past. I can barely give you a summary.

its a small not really canon interaction, but at the beginning of Undead Nightmare Jack actually seems pretty well adjusted and easy going around his mom and dad, cracking good natured sarcasm, and being excited to share his hobby of reading with John, so much so John seems to have a pause that shows how happy he is to see Jack being happy.
That does however give me the impression that might actually be a timeline event, as at that moment jack was talking about the undead curse in the book he read so that moment of pause from John could represent him daydreaming into the events of Undead Nightmare. So before then, that could've been a misc day in the life before the day Ross raided the place and killed John.

there’s a theory undead nightmare is a portrayal of john’s inner anxiety and guilt . he might see that briefly ideal version of his family as something he takes away and ruins.

I feel there is a darkly tragic way in how Jack comes to adopt much of the ideology of Dutch. It’s a very generational trauma style of seeing the world that is passed from Dutch to John and then down to jack and I think it’s a good way to summarize the traumatic underpinnings of why these characters act the way they do.
Dutch and his ideology are unique not in content but in how they personalize responsibility in an unhealthy way I feel. You touched on it in the John video but I feel it might be worth expanding on that these characters hold a sick worldview which ultimately pushes them into dramatic and incredibly dangerous confrontation with anyone who wronged them even slightly. The narcissistic excuses of Dutch flowing down the generational line to justify trauma both experienced and inflicted

As someone with major trauma and depression seeing jack act certain ways i can see that in myself i mean i barely remember anything from when i was younger because my trauma blocks its out. But they can come back with that ptsd like what happened to him when john shot those 3 guys and how jack was acting because of it.
I get emotional flashbacks, as in id get triggered and then just lose control... Doesn't happen often (thank God) but its followed by perpetual emptiness in daily life afterwards , and the memory paet does suck, just on autopilot most of the time, are you ok right now?

I really hope we’ll get to see RDR3 with Jack as protagonist, probably set in the late 20s in rural Midwest, with Jack serving as a war vet marshall trying to catch up with new arising threat of organised criminals with fast cars and machineguns, all while looking for his true self and his purpose in life.
If I could have it my way, it'd be more focused on the prohibition era of america, as i think it very reasonably fits a western theme. I also think that either 1. The government has no record of Jack and can't draft him or 2. I simply feel he was raised a draft dodger lol

I honestly don't know if Jack should be a protagonist again. I feel like maybe we could have a prohibition era RDR3 with machine guns, fast cars and booze and all that, but with a new set of protagonists, with Jack maybe being a background character or something like that
Very interesting idea. I’d personally prefer RDR3 to be a prequel even further back than 1899, maybe like the 1870s right after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. In that period, I’d love to see a setting in the far west, maybe having San Francisco acting as the Saint Denis of the game. There’s definitely a lot to dig into in this period regarding labor struggles, colonization, robber-barons, and of course all that great old Wild West atmosphere. I’m not sure there are too many characters that fit totally neatly into this, but we know that Hosea is from out west, so he could potentially be an important side character. We could also potentially interact with a younger Rains Fall at a time when the Wapiti had more freedom than in the 1890s, or a teenage Arthur fleeing his abusive background. Idk but whatever time and place they choose for the next title, I’m sure it’ll work fantastically. I’m just not personally sure that I’d love a Red Dead game with cars and machine guns, ya know?

This video actually encouraged me to seek therapy again. I relate to Jack too much for it to be healthy. The whole game almost feels like an alegory for my childhood.
My complete headcanon continuation of Jack's life is that he got drafted and served into WW1. While overseas he may and married an Italian woman. They moved to UK where he became very famous as an author writing books based on fictionalized versions of accounts from Arthur's and John's journals as well as his own. He suspected in the murder of Edgar Ross, but since his death happened outside of the US and there were no direct witnesses, nobody could ever pin it on him.
Yeah I'll incorporate that into my worldview. Great headcanon
Mine kinda similar, except he dodged the draft, because he refuses to fight for the government who killed his dad, and many other members of his "family", and abducted him and his mother. Eventually, he somehow found his way to Russia in 1917, joined in the revolution, then became an author. Maybe even spent some time in Spain during the civil war there aiding or atleast documenting the efforts of the C.N.T/F.A.I., before returning to wherever he took up residence.
I like to imagine in a sort of what if scenario for a future game following Jack but not necessarily of the Red Dead series, a government guy tracks him down and offers him an ultimatum: either pay for his crimes through execution, or put his sleuthing and gunfighting skills to use in the war as some sort of special operative and be pardoned if by some chance he makes it out alive.
Him asking around for Ross would be enough for the bureau to probably track him down to Mexico. Best bet in my opinion, flee to Australia.

I honestly don't think I'm the person to make an impartial, empathetic video on Micah. For me, he makes himself a pretty aa pure evil grr type when he attempts to assault Sadie and then throws out a slur like a minute later within the first mission. I get he has depth, and I'm not opposed to talking about him but I feel I'd have to be very careful in how. But I don't think people can expect an unbaised analysis of Micah that won't assert he's the devil.

Come to think of it, Micah is a good villain because his psychological portrait and motivation make sense. He’s an opportunistic survivor and he’s after himself always, and he also knows how to manipulate people for his own gains.

It certainly could but the fact that he lacks much depth, I hesitate to make that assertion as it's not like Dutch where I can point to a decline. For Micah, we don't get much nuance, it's mostly a caricature of what people assume of a lot of cluster B disorders, and I don't want to add to the stigma surrounding already super stigmatized disorders. This was well done and a strong start to a channel. I hope you continue to do more deep dives on other RDR characters, particularly Sadie since she seems to be one of the most misunderstood of the bunch(cries of "mary sue" from segments of the fanbase).
Anyway, this dive was particularly interesting to me because at times it felt like you were analyzing *me*, though I've been diagnosed with just "regular" PTSD. It's still possible to remember when I was a nice, kind-hearted kid like Jack who turned into a bitter, destructive asshole. It was heartbreaking for me as well. I think this game hits differently for people who...let's just say lived "similar" lives as the characters and are now trying to turn themselves around into good people. It literally had me in my room trying not to loudly bawl because it's like I get to vicariously experience my own redemption. I'm in therapy and I've been working at this for around a decade now, but even though I'm trying to find new meds that work for me AND I'm currently in a deep valley of depression I feel like I've glimpsed the light of a better life before the very notion is so enticing it's worth facing myself and all that pain. As I said, I'm currently in a very bad place due to my illnessess, so sorry if bits of this are a tad incoherent. It's been a little difficult expressing my thoughts lately.

Thank you for this. Jacks not my favorite character.....but part of that is because i feel uncomfortable with how i can relate to him. Did i live in a gang, get kidnapped and witness murder and commit murder? No. But I do actually have cptsd, and dont remember much of my childhood, cause i was constantly uprooted, wasnt allowed to have emotions and had little to no friends, and when I was old enough to start asking questions, I was gaslit alot, which only led to anger, resentment, confusion, eradic behavior as a teen. I think its more than plausable to assume jack has it based on the information and events we see in the game. Thank god i live in current day so mental health help is more readily available. Plot twist: i have friends now and Im even married so I like to think there is some hope for jack marston too.
Side note: since were talking jack stuff, i just want to state my opinion on a popular theory of him fighting in WWI. I hate the idea for several reasons, as I think it wouldnt make sense for his character, the pinkertons, and the narrative and western theme in the games series. I think that if ppl really want him to fight in a war (but like, pls dont that to him.) Why not make it make more sense? Like, idk, stick to the north america contenent and see jack flee to mexico and maybe he gets caught up in the mexican revolution(1910-1920, so its still within the time frame of the events of the game)? If ya'll want to see jack get more traumatised so much, can we at least still have it be a western? I dont think anyone would be upset about going back to mexico. Hell, maybe he runs into sadie at some point in south america? He could end the game getting off south america, going to tahiti and living a peaceful life growing mangos 😂 Just my two cents.

i really don’t want to see jack as a protagonist in another game, because i know that’ll be he’s going to either die or suffer further. he’s just going to endure a whole other portion of his life that is plagued by violence.
however, if they ever did do anything for jack, i’d hope it would be something about him settling down and finding purpose in life outside of his fathers legacy. getting married, having children, restoring the ranch, maybe becoming a writer???? anything other than my boy hurting any further.
i’d also love to see you touch on jack’s low honor and high honor interactions. i think the way he talks to women in particular is very sad when he’s low honor. it’s also sad to see how violent and reactive he is to just about everything when he’s at a low honor. i wonder what would happen to him canonically if he continued on with the low honor.

I've been a fan of the rdr games since 2010 and I never really found much insight into Jack's personality and life traumas. I really wish we got to see how Jack coped or lived after the events of 1

I love your video essays about RDR. Poor Jack, one trauma after another from birth to late teens. Also, there's that moment RDR1 where he and John talk about how Uncle told him about STD's. So he's a teen whose only sex ed info comes from an old drunkard, outlaw and self-described maniac. Great parenting again, John! (I like Uncle, but educator, that he certainly isn't.)
Holy shit okay as someone who has often wondered if I have cptsd, this video is spot on and scarcely reminiscent of my own life.
I was never homeless, but I remember my mom telling me how I was such a happy kid and wondering what happened, secluding myself becoming low verbal at times. I remember internalizing fucking everything anyone said about me at a young age, I also started severe self depreciation at 9 maybe 10, so all of that pretty much lines up.
My dad was also a lot like Jack because he was often times in and out of my life and he caused more stress and anxiety when he was in the home versus when he was away. I also remember being neglected by both of my parents and having to sit through huge fights between the two of them.
One of the things that resonated with me the most is when Jack does not cry with his father died. When my grandmother died I did not cry at all. I remember feeling like an alien compared to everyone around me and worrying that I was a psychopath.
During my childhood I was almost always disassociated because of trauma and gender dysphoria. If I were to guess I have probably lived like 50% of my life in depersonalized. I still have basically no identity. I don't even really even see myself as a person.
This video probably just convinced me I do have cptsd smh.
Unfortunately, I believe Jack will fall the same fate as the tale of the franchise is that "revenge is a fools game. John broke his promise to Arthur and reaped what he sewed. That killing of Micah gave the government a trail to find him. John sacrifices himself for his family to live free, just as Arthur did, and Jack continued the cycle..
Revenge is met with severe consequence in that franchise n yeah.
I wish for a conclusion to his story anyway, as I'd find it to be interesting. But I know we won't as RDR isn't supposed to veer away from the frontier.
It's supposed to be a commentary on the industrialization of what was the Wild West. The goodbye to the old world and ways of knowing things.
Alas, side tangent, I know. Great video and I think you're touching on a topic I feel like most just glance over. So kudos to shining light on it.
I believe jack became a writer. Because everything in rdr2 story is made out of chapters. Like a book. Also, there are people saying something like "ur gonna end up in a picture of a wild west novel"
I just feel like everything points to him becoming a writer at one point
