    There are a few sequencing glitches in my editing because I had to put this footage together after having been collected over several months. I even had a remake in the middle of the project due to the bride's significant weight loss. If you have any questions about the sequencing or details, let me know! :) I'll be happy to decifer.

    I made lace sleeves for a wedding gown. They were smart and had already purchased appliques and the tulle knit material for the sleeves from the company. They turned out great and I'm 100% assured that it was largely due to the best materials. Wish I knew how to post the pic. 🥰

    Brenda I have watched dozens of your videos. They are so informing and entertaining too! (Swoops :) This video completely blew me away. I have done a lot of adding sleeves to sleeveless and strapless gowns, but I never thought of using a fitted t-shirt of the bride's to make the pattern for all the parts that you have to fill in! That is BRILLIANT. I am going to give it a go this coming week as a bride wants a major reconstruct to the dress she got off the rack - that needs the whole catootie! Had also never thought of using a clear strap across the back to prevent the shoulders from drooping.
    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

    This is really great! Another good option for a foldable, pressable pattern material is sew in interfacing. It's cheap and holds up really well, and isn't as likely to stretch out of shape on the bias.

    • @margareth1504
      @margareth1504 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh Yea! I also use interfacing (not the iron on type) for pattern making - been using it for many years. Used to buy a roll of it which lasted me years at a time - for home sewing. Its tough enough, soft enough and great surface to write on for pattern pieces, detail sizing etc, easy to fold and store pattern pieces, can iron it flat again if needed. Plus that interfacing stays in place fairly well and doesnt slip while cutting out.

    Thank you so so much for this! And for adding that you had to put in the clear strap at the back! I had a bride come in with almost the exact same dress idea and refused to put in the strap OR an invisible panel at the front. It kept falling off her shoulders and no matter how hard I pleaded she refused. It was so so awful. I just about cried when you said you had to put in the clear strap, because it ment I was right! I felt so down about the failure of the fit on that dress.

    Brenda, is it possible on one of your videos to show what your stitching looks like underneath
    when attaching lace applique? My stitching is always very loose underneath and I end up
    doing more hand sewing than necessary ( or feasible). Thank you!

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I'll try to put it in my stories on here. So be on the lookout. The stitching will be looser than normal, but shouldn't birdnest. Check your little tensioner on the tip top of your machine. & your bobbin tension. Those effect it. The tensioner knob that normally regulates the top thread is disengaged when you lift the knee lift.

      The more researching I do, the more videos I watch, I do find that sewists always trace a copy of the pattern size they they are using to make the garment. Then they make a draft/fabric garment out of muslin to try to for on the individual. Then they make the actual garment out of the actual fabric. It seems like a lot of work, but I think it would more helpful to do a garment this way. As you said, you usually just do alterations, so n obviously you would not be doing all of these extra steps. I love that you showed how you draft the sleeves, and how you used the tight-fitting shirt underneath and attached it to the gown. Also, watching you draft, create, and sew the illusion sleeves is Amazing!! Thanks so much!♡♡

    Hello, I hope you can help me with this. A (friend) bride has a lace dress and wants to make first looks photos outside in the grass and everything. This could seriously damage/stain the bottom of a dress so she wants me to affix the fabric and lace to the bottom of a slightly larger petticoat. This way, if the damage to the big petticoat's hemline is too great, she would just go to the slimmer silhouette for the rest of the day.
    The large petticoat is raising the hemline by about 4 inches. So how would you go about it? Is it a good idea at all?
    Thanks!

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats an extremely time consuming and unusual way of avoiding grass stains. Most just have someone help lift the dress as they walk & then place it down for pictures, avoiding mud and debris. Her dress will look completely different with a petticoat under it. It doesn't make sense at all.

    Thanks for posting this, just what I needed! One thing though that I must’ve missed out on is the sort of extension from the bodice armhole to the sleeves.. why was there a need for that? Is it for structure? Or can I just make a full on bodice of the sheer nude fabric extending to the shoulder tip and then just attach the sleeves? (Eliminating the need for the extension).. just asking if it’s for structure or is t for extending the armhole at shoulder? Thanks! 😃

    Hello, thank you for the tips. I wonder, if I'll use stretch material for the sleeves, front and back and attach the applique, wont the material ripple on weird places if I will move my arms since some parts do stretch and some don't (where the flowers are)? Wont it rip? I would like to make my own wedding dress and I do have some weight on, so my arms do request some stretch material and I love the illusion effect, however I keep wondering about this. All videos looks like I just sew it on the sleeve and it will be just fine, but I cannot figure out the whole stretch-no stretch thing. I would like to go with white tulle though instead of nude, if possible.

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Ideally you want the amount of stretch to be as close as possible. So if you used a very stretchy knit & a non-stretchy lace, there could be some incompatibility. Most of these sleeves are made of tulle that doesn't have a lot of stretch.
      One option- you could look into using an all-over lace knit fabric. The lace pattern is knit into the fabric and all of it stretches together. That may warrant you changing the lace on the bodice, though- so that it matches.

      @@BridalSewing Thank you for confirming my thoughts. I think I will have to go with less stretch fabric then, I was thinking of butterfly sleeves. I am not fan of the steetch laces on the market, one of the reason I want to make my own dress is I have very specific idea of the lace and I just didnt fing anything like it (in my price range :) ).
      I've seen your other videos and seems I'll be visiting your channel many times next several months :) It would be great to have someone with your skills nearby to consult on more subjects, but I wouldn't be making it by myself then I supose :)

      It is different everywhere bc living expenses are diff. This vid goes into how to set your prices:

      Personally, I start sleeves around 200-250$ some this elaborate could easily hit $400 or more. Beadwork would, of course, add more

    Good Day, Can I ask a question? what kind of tulle are being used in see through body and sleeves for gown ?

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very tricky question right now with supply chains being interrupted. If I have my wishes for this project, it would be, "super fine tulle" from the UK. If you want a more classic look with durability, go with, "French Tulle."

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You really just need to scour the interwebs. There's no simple way. If you can't find something similar, than you'll need to find the seamstress that you want to use, and then have her source the lace that matches best.

  • @deliaweber9220

    Firstly! Yay! Thank you so much for your new video!!!!!! In following the sequence of alterations, I saw that you first fully finished the tulle sleeve (with french seams) after you fitted the bride. When you then started the lace applique part, the sleeves where completely unsewn (seams taken apart). I don't remember mention of that.
    Does this mean you completely finish the sleeve (french seams and all...) to get the right fit and then take all the seams apart apart in order to pin the lace? Tulle is tricky and delicate and un-sewing seams may leave snags/holes. So just very curious how you manage this part.
    P.S. I don't know if it's just me (it always is....) but I prefer the other view from your camera (the one from the right side, if that makes sense). I am able to see more details when you sew. Just throwing it out there. I'm usually the minority...

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll try to go line by line here. If there are inconsistencies, please note that this project started last spring and stretched over several months, with many other brides coming through at the same time. Also- editing can be really tricky. Sometimes the videos are out of order and I have to spy at the details to merge them correctly. Also, for brevity's sake, I have to edit out chunks of the job. I never do that just to make a job look easier or make me look perfect, etc. lol
      I must say, this was my longest, most challenging video that I have produced. Even Hollywood with all their pros has bloopers where the actor has sunglasses on and off his face during a scene. I feel their pain now! Haha. Also- note how many outfit changes I had! You can tell this was a long running project because of that as well.
      So, as far as I remember, I actually had to remake the extensions and the sleeves in it's entirety at one point because the bride lost a drastic amount of weight. So I have footage of both and tried to pair them up seamlessly, (pardon the pun! lol)
      Ideally, I would sew the tulle (one seam), fit it, french seam only the extensions, etc. fit again with a little wiggle room in the sleeve. Pin lace, try on, applique lace, sew up sleeve then french the seams. I hope that makes sense. But I def do sew the sleeves up for fitting and then open them to applique them. I just wouldn't french the seams and them take apart two seams. Also, I didn't mention this detail, but to lessen the chance of damage, I would sew the tulle with a long stitch length and a 9bp needle the first go-round. As I develop the fit, I do often have to re-cut damaged tulle sleeves though. No big deal, really.
      As far as camera angles go, I totally agree with you. I prefer the one from the right as well. It's really difficult for me to navigate around though, so for a longer job like this, the above and behind filming was much more tolerable. I'm going to try to come up with a wall mounted rig, (as opposed to a tripod) to get that right sided angle in a more comfortable way. I think the viewing angle is more similar to our own viewing angle when we sew.

    This video is sooo helpful! Thank you!
    2 problems I would like to learn about...
    #1. I get a lot of Muslim brides. They choose strapless gowns and then want a complete top put on. How do I measure for this? I never seem to get it quite right.
    #2. Another adjustment I often do is to put a corset back in a too-tight gown to allow it to fit. I use interfacing and rigilene boning to stabilize the backing. But sometimes the gown’s bodice is mesh (tulle) with lace overlay, so the backing has to be mesh (tulle) as well. So no interfacing, only boning. What is a good way to do this, and how best to make the boning look good?

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have footage of an illusion back gown having boning added, so stay tuned. :) The short way of saying it is to fold skin matching ribbon around the boning. Sew it to the strip. Then sew the boning to the illusion.

      I can't remember. It was ages ago. I would probs request 2 yards, bc you never know how the repeat works on the fabric. Also it may only have a nice edge down one side- they may cut the other side off for trim, etc.

    Morning Brenda wouldn’t it be better to leave to sleeve seam open from the beginning then applicae the lace. Or was it French seamed for the fit first. I have such difficulty reopening those mesh seams with a razor. Ugh. Hope I make sense.

    • @BridalSewing
      @BridalSewing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do make sense! I have a sequencing issue around that part. I typically would fit it with single seams, adjust, maybe french all but the arm seam. Try back on. Then lay out lace, single seam, try on for contouring & placement, then applique, then french the arm seam. I usually wait to french that to the very end so I can adjust the tightness of the sleeve. I'm actually not one bit afraid of damaging the tulle. I want the fit to be perfect, so if I have to cut out 3 sets of sleeves, I don't mind. Tulle is super cheap, & it take 2 mins to cut out a new sleeve. I know, I'm weird!! Lol!!

      I do! But it takes a while for it to make it to a video. I have a huge backlog of footage. Don't be scared. Flutter sleeves are easy-peasy. :D Google how to make a sleeve pattern into a flutter sleeve. It just requires some slits in the pattern so that it is expandable. You fan the pattern out & then fill the gaps. You'll understand when you see the pictures online. Good luck! 🍀
