    Haegeum is a traditional instrument but it also means freedom or lifting of a ban. Funny how you said he's doing things in this video you don't normally see in k-pop videos because in his documentary, Road to D-Day, which also dropped today btw, he said that people blow the smallest thing out of proportion when it comes to idols. He's smoking in this video, but there will still be people who would criticise him for it, despite the fact he's 31. So, haegeum is about lifting the ban from things they've been told they can't or shouldn't do.

      @@TheChampOfMedium also, re the end: if you remember daechwita's ending, blond mad king Agust D was shot by the black-haired Agust D, who in haegeum became the cop - the same authority figure he killed in daechwita. then HE was shot by the third Agust D (notice how this third Agust D does not have a scar) because it's a cycle and he's trying to break out of it. hence, the scene where he took the cigarette and set the money on fire.

  • @sh5209
    @sh5209 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    8:20 - yes! that's what I felt, too. that he's critiquing the society but also acknowledging he, too, is a part of it because he was forced into it. and who better to critique something than someone who was forced to participate in it? You cannot expect people with generation wealth or blood money to say this because they don't what it's like, but for someone who earned their way to the top, they know what it's like because they have experienced it. so, it's about having a choice, self-critique, and a critique of the society we're a cog of, the society we live in.

  • @aday-su5om

    I feel like there’s a hint of the cyclical nature of history & society in how Agust D kills these alternate versions of himself. Partly the battle with trying to become your better self (fighting your own greed and conformity etc), but also the revolutionary who killed the mad king then became the repressive authority himself, and was in turn taken out by the next revolutionary who wanted to shape society his own way.

    • @ForeverAmber_1
      @ForeverAmber_1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! That smile right before he got shot was less of an "oh fu*k" and more of an amused "here we go again." And the cycle of trying to tame yourself continues, ya know? It's a never- ending battle.

    A Thailand ARMY (shout out to Sky_hxneul) was kind enough to educate us and explain that this was filmed in Thailand and that place is called the "Thief Market" Rattanakosin Island's ( Old name of Thailand from 1782-1892) and it was the first international shoping center in the period after the abolition of slavery.. This is how he explained it : so this market came to exist because the people in the palace freed from slavery when they moved out of the palace, they received some goods from the master and also stole some They then brought those goods to sell them in this area. Now we know that Haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means the liberation of the prohibition..

    So something twitter armys were theorizing is how there is always a rebel to kill the guy that is in power, and when we talk about the 2 Agust D in the video is like in Daechwita the rebel killed the king, that in some level represents yoongi thinking he's on the top of the world, and his greed. Then in Haegeum, the rebel from Daechwita now is a cop, that apparently is corrupt, so there is the need of another rebel to bring him down. For me is like the rebel is yoongi when he perceives that his greed or ego are taking control of him, so the rebel has to kill that yoongi for him to return to his roots or something like that. But then it happens again, is like a ciyvle in which yoongi has to constantly be aware of when his ego is getting to big. I don't know if what I said made sense at all lol

    You should rewatch the Daechwita video! I didn’t watch this with lyrics originally but it is very much the same story as Daechwita visually. It’s the modern retelling! Instead of the king and the rebel it’s the cop and the criminal. You picked up on the style of the songs mirroring each other, but the videos do too with the same beats. The opening shot with the market, the king/cop being physically higher than the rebel/criminal a lot of the time. When he slows down the rap and drops the music he’s a captive, and then he’s taken to the king/cop who it seems will execute him but instead he kills the king/cop. Even the shot hanging out the police car at the end mirrors in the middle of Daechwita when he’s doing donuts in the car.
    I think it’s a really important comparison because it emphasises that rebel and criminal are two sides of the same coin. Like the rebel in Daechwita is kinda unambiguously the good guy, and then the parallel is drawn to the criminal in Haegum who is much more grey. He’s still the main character, still wins in the end, and we’re rooting for him over the cop. But also he killed a guy with chopsticks and robbed that store(?). He is not a good guy.
    And I think that links back to the message of the song that you have to re-evaluate your view of *everyone* even the people you disagree with. Even the people you think are criminal/evil.
    And now the speculation zone: I think this is especially pointed at Korean society where a lot of things that are seen as fine/normal in the west are criminalised and still socially shunned in Korean society. Being gay, having tattoos, just generally loving outside the “expected” life path. BTS especially in the early days wrote a lot about not having to live how society/authority says you should. Plus the Haegum being another traditional instrument ties this song to Korean culture.
    Suga has hinted A LOT in his lyrics and interviews that he’s bi/pan, so I suspect the Korean societal prejudice against queer people is something he’s thinking about here. Not the only thing, but one of them.

    This song and the mv had me in a chokehold. Not only did Yoongi's acting get MUCH better (and he was already literally a pro), but the entire cinematography backs it up. The song is a banger, no doubt. HAEGEUM is a traditional instrument, but it also means release from prohibition. The mv is so fascinating. In Daechwita, he killed the blond Agust D because he was too corrupt with anger and resentment. Agust D couldn't take it anymore. But in Haegeum the Agust D scar ended up as corrupted as the blonde Agust D. It's interesting that the new Agust D basically started the mv by killing a person and ending with the memory of it. Agust D is a trilogy because Yoongi was finally able to unite with Suga and Agust D. They are no longer apart because he learned to embrace all of his feelings. In this MV, the new Agust D. is a vigilante and violent villain because that's what Agust D is. But instead of just killing the scarred Agust D, who in this narrative, is a corrupt secret agent, (as happened to the blonde Agust D), he ALSO burned the money scar that Agust D had. My interpretation is that this whole mv revolves around FREE SPEECH, which may not be correct. 🤣. Finally, cheers to SUGA for yet another unique work of art.👏❤

      @fi0rella In the U.S., the color blue is typically associated with the Democratic party, and red is representative of the Republican party. If you mix the two colors, you get purple, and I think it would be a good representation of some kind of political middle ground here. 🙂

    Anyways, the way I saw this MV was as a continuation of the Daetchwita mv. We had Modern Agust D kill King Agust D but Modern Agust D also turned bad (as seen in this mv) so a new Agust D (with no scar) kills him. But, Modern Agust D smiles at the end bc he can see No Scar Agust D continuing this cycle...

    Yep, he’s fed up with KPop Idol culture as well, the artificiality, rules and constraints. Also, the rivalry and pettiness. He is emancipating himself from all that, as an artist. Time to get real. The gang violence was shocking, but the lyrics make it clear: we need to be more discerning and stop the tyranny of conformity and greed. The tragic end of MoonBin at this time underscores the cost of idol culture.
