Andy has a really amazing analysis of the music business. Love Andys talking, and I love Phils unboxing videos, specially CD box sets. I really like the both of you, great channels!
So great that my two favorite British music podcasters -are having a hard discussion about the realities of the new music business, excellent! Andy has some very valuable insights that I hope all the people will heed if they are musicians, and ‘, Phil I hope you hip Andy to the magnificence of AndyTillisons Tangent recording ‘ to follow Polaris’ . Oh, by the way, if either one of you do come up with a way to send a sausage and egg roll sandwichthrough the iPad. You will be multibillionaires.!!!lol.
Phil, Excellent interview ! I recently read that the AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a worry for performers and musicians. Thank you both for the video !!
Watched this earlier today over on Patreon Phil. Really interesting discussion. Many of the things Andy talks about are the concepts laid out in Kevin Kelly’s famous “1000 True Fans” essay back in 2008. Basically you don’t need lots of fans you just need a small core of dedicated ones. As musicians, or indeed as content creators, we can still make a living if we engage with the business and the audience in a modern way, but I do think that outside of the pop world we won’t ever see the same amounts of money that we did in the past. Another great video as usual. 🙂
Is it better than ever for musicians?. Haven't you got to put extra effort into promoting yourself rather than concentrating on writing/performing. Just a thought. What do I know? Edwards is highly intelligent and experienced in the industry.
I think The Enid was the first group to crowdfund an LP, with their Something Wicked This Way Comes album, many years before Marillion. Great content though.
I've had a 40+ year career in semi pro and pro music ( primarily as a drummer ) . Most of the people that I have encountered who have been involved in the "the industry" ( from the 70's and 80's ) are traumatised by it ( not unlike war veterans ) ... All of the bands / projects that I have had involvement with that actually earned money or achieved recognition were not involved with "the industry" at all ... However , if a signed artist or band manages to shake off their tainted industry ties early enough and then maintain their own brand / business from there on in , operating on their own terms whenever possible , that is the best chance of turning the whole venture into a commercially viable/ lucrative operation for themselves ... Most industry victims are seduced when they are far too young and eager for fame , at a time when they are too lazy and assume that everything will and should be done for them . It's a steep and tough learning curve ( or a shit business , to correctly quote Les McQueen from The League of Gentlemen ) .
Andy is right about most of this stuff, but he also has to realize that he’s a known musician, so it’s much easier to catch fire when you do a TH-cam channel, if you are a nobody musician it’s much harder.
I think there was a time (1970) when the music hit the charts without you looking like a Film Star? Slade were a set of blokes, as were Jethro Tull, Family etc also I recall Curved Air were handed a 100,000 pound advance by Warner Brothers, massive money! so there was Big Money available. But, I'm guessing that Steve Hackett for instance makes more now than he did with Genesis? Ticket prices lower than the normal...still 50 quid but I've paid more, merch reasonable prices too..just saying?
Who would give an unknown band a £100,000 advance now? The record company has to get a return back and then some, Hackett is a legacy artist so he has an existing and traditional audience but where's that return coming from on a new band or artist.

Sausage Roll Double Album ?
On pastry coloured vinyl
Hell-bent on 3d printing a Greggs' sausage roll.
I'll save the music industry later.
