What's happening is, the corrosion on the Cooper pieces is not making a good connection sometimes and the starter jack shaft is not extending at all, It's just spinning.
Having the same exact issue on my 2000 fat boy just started out of nowhere... Wineing sound more often then the bike actually firing up... Thanks for the video bud I'm going to give this a try
My 06 sportster 1200 just started doing this. Whining every once in a while, now it's all the time. Did this fix help you with your bike? Want to avoid buying a new starter if all possible.
@@Chris-0113 mine wound up being the bendix screw came loose ... Ripped off the primary and seen the screw came loose and bent... Screw, outer primary gasket and oil $40 fix Thank God
I have a 97 dyna lowrider, pretty much the same bike, same color also, lol i was wandering where you get those foot boards from and would they fit my bike? Do you have a part# on them, and where did you get them, i have forward controls, wonder if that would be a problem.
This is exactly what my 98 softail classic is doing. Now that I see this I guess I didn’t need a new starter but I got one and I’ll probably do this to have one on the shelf. Being a mech mod vape user, those marks are probably from arcing, not the pieces smashing together. I get similar marks on the switches to my mechanical mods switches.
well that's fine..you got more then i do: I lost all power and drained the battery to zero ..looked at what i could and found my positive lead to the starter solenoid when tested shows a closed circuit at the starter case..and thru out the frame..I took the solenoid plunger out and still have direct grounding ..so i'm to think the solenoid post is shorted to the case..or the insulator has broken. that's my next check to pull the post out of the housing...

How did you get the nuts back into the bottom bolt? For the life of me I can't get my hands or fingers in there to get the nut started on my 03 Springer Softail. Any help would be cool.
I'm getting a grinding and clanging when I go to start my 97 flstc, I txd the last shop that worked on this problem after a quick back and forth now I'm hearing crickets?!
Solenoid is working or wouldnt click, the gear has a "clutch" like assembly inside of it, it should only spin one direction with zero back spin ability. Theyre like 50 bucks
Your starter clutch assemble is bad. The spinning sound is a clear indication. If your solenoid was going bad you would hear a clicking sound. But the starter relay could the the problem too. Don't be a parts changer without a clear diagnosis.
I’m hoping this is same issue in having with my sportster it just clicks then all power has gone and I have to wait hours until I get some power on the dash lights. I’ve got power everywhere as checked with multimeter so last resort is solenoid. Thanks for the vid
It is a SOLINOID, not a selliinoid. Say it - SOL - IN - OID, you are killing the English language. Your bike will always play up while you are killing the english language, after all, the English language is all Harley Davidson has now that is remotely Americian.
Thats the sprag gear strippihg out. Starter clutch some folks call it. Silinoid is working fine.
Free spin of starter is gonna be starter clutch, jack shaft, or stripped teeth on the clutch basket gear

Getting ready to do this to my 98 Fatboy FLSTF. Changing out the ground wire from the beaker to a heavier gage also helps.

@@rumjack313 Right on. Thanks for the reply. I'll be tearing into mine in a couple hours. Hopefully it's an inexpensive fix.

Have the same issue, did you ever track down the fix?
I wish HD would go back to kickstarters plus electric start… never be stranded
im about to try to replace starter on my 2011 heritage. I gotta remove my oil tank and what not. Ive never done it before sonim a bit nervous lol
A thin film of dielectric grease precludes wear and corrosion of the contact parts.
That is a bad idea - dialectic grease is an insulator - it will inhibit electrical contact

Did the wine sound come back? Or did this fix it ? 👍😎
Fixed it!!!
