    Last January I suffered a massive heart attack and nearly died. While I was in CCU, my wife brought me in this book, of my hero. I read it in three days, and by the end of those three days, I was walking the corridors and thinking about how soon it would be till I could take my son skating again. Good times

      You forgot to sign your name Alan E to that outrageous statement. How in hell would Brad Park, another NHL great, even have any knowledge of Orr's contract negotiations? Ask GM Harry Sinden, terms of the sale to Jacobs were to have Orr signed with the Bruins as part of the deal.

      Bobby played well in the 1972 final.....(Espo no goals in the 6 game final) Guess who beat MONTREAL in the 72 quartefinal......................Brad Park and the Rangers...........Funny that Brad came thru for us in 1983 game 7 vs
      BUFFALO,and Bobby took the gas pipe in game 7 of the 1971 Montreal playoff. Brad and Ray Bourque were better players AND RAY HAS THE NUMBERS TO PROVE IT.................

    My mom went to school with Bobby’s dad and sister and we lived very close to the Orr family. Growing up in small town Parry Sound everyone knew each other. One day some asks his mom (rural Parry Sound) what she thinks of her son’s hockey success. With her response you will realize why is such a nice guy. “Both of my sons play hockey (Ron played minor hockey in PS). What son are you referring too? I’m proud of both my boys.”

      I think so too. I've noticed that Beliveau and Orr are the two hockey players that I basically never hear anything bad about. Gretzky is obviously popular but he has a lot of detractors too. Those two don't seem to have any.

    • @mikes3827
      @mikes3827 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +waterlilyqueen That's true about Bobby Orr. I'm from Boston, and I say this not to boast, but Boston has had a LOT of mammoth superstar sports figures: Bill Russell, Larry Bird, John Havlicek, Ted Williams, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Ray Bourque, Phil Esposito, Tom Brady, etc., but all of the guys I mentioned have come under criticism, at one point of another.
      But, I've never, EVER seen or read a single bad word about Orr., which is VERY strange considering how notoriously tough Boston's media & fans can be. To say Orr was (and still is) a God in Boston would be an understatement. But the most amazing thing about Orr is as great a player as he was, he's an even better person.
      Derek Sanderson said that if he and Bobby would be driving around Boston early before a practice or game, and Bobby would ask him to go visit sick kids at Children's Hospital. No press or fanfare, that's just who Bobby was: a class act. I don't like thinking about it, but the day Bobby passes away, there will be a LOT of ppl calling in sick to work, because the city/suburbs will be in mourning. And I'm not kidding. That's how much Orr is beloved in Boston.

      @@jaykendall7557 I have more respect for the Habs in the 70's than in the Original Six era; The Habs got all the Quebec players, the Leafs the Ontario players ( somehow whiffed on Hull and Orr ) The league was structured so that those 2 franchises couldn't help dominating .

    There’s no comparison between Orr and Gretzky in my opinion. Sure Gretzky was a prolific goal scorer. But Orr played the game at both ends, he’s the true GOAT and I can even imagine if he got to play a full career if it wasn’t cut short due to injury. Gordie Howe played until he was 52, Orr retired at 30, imagine if we got to see Orr play another 22 years.

    Such as great man. When my wife and I started dating I booked a bed and breakfast in Parry Sound. When we checked on, it was an older lady ie)80 plus. Nice house but kind of cluttered. Our room was in the basement which was finished.but had tons and tons of file boxes everywhere. I said to her what’s all this stuff? She said her husband who had passed was the County Judge/Magistrate etc. And by law, she had to keep these files for 40 years. With a chuckle she said if I would have known that I would have divorced him before he passed and then laughed it off. I noticed some pics of Bobby Orr hanging and some had been signed. Knowing Bobby was from there she told me that her husband was a lawyer at the time Bobby was getting noticed and when Boston made him his first contract offer, Mr Orr and Bobby found out the lawyer was playing golf at the local golf course. They ran all over the course to find him so he could read the contract and get some advice on what to do etc. Small world...

    The elbow Bobby took from Gordie was because earlier in that game, Bobby's first pro game, Bobby crosschecked Gordie in the head, according to Gordie and film footage. Gordie said, "After he did it the Bruins rallied around him and Bobby told them to relax that he deserved it."

      Still stings, 50 years later, but an enormous, unfamiliar goalie played a large part. Another factor, IMO, was the Habs acquiring Frank Mahovlich, the second best LW at the time, from Detroit.Like 2010 and 11, the B's used the disappointment to their advantage one year later.

    From Philadelphia, but can say the Flyers would have lost to the Bruins in 1974 if not for the 1972 creation of the W.H.A. It was a tough six game series and the Bruins did not have McKenzie, Stanfield, Sanderson and Cheevers. The Flyers got a mulligan with the W.H.A. creations as they got Parent back who they traded to Toronto in 1971. Bernie went to the W.H.A. in 72 and left the Philly Blazers and got traded back to the Flyers. Without Bernie, The Flyers would have GOTTEN BLOWN OUT OF THE SERIES.

Must just be a very happy kind of guy. Part of the concussion problem is the battering ram quality of shoulder pads. Go back to the old Cooper's and let's see what happens.

    I hear these arguments all the time. Different positions - Different ERA's - Different rules to the game. Try to compare legends is pretty much impossible. Unless they played at the same time.

    • @queenofyeay
      @queenofyeay 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Stewart P Except that Bobby Orr was the type of ground breaking player that could play in any era. The one area that has changed pretty drastically since Orr's time is goaltending it is a far more skilled position than it was then. So Bobby might not score at a 1.4 point per game clip (4th in NHL history) as he did in his era and it seems the overall quality of players is better than the players then so perhaps he wouldn't have averaged nearly a PLUS 1 (#1 +/- all time) for each game he played in the NHL (nearly three time better than Gretzky) BUT there is no doubt in my mind that Bobby Orr in his prime would still be a superstar if he were playing in 2015-16. Absolutely no question, there are things Orr did on a regular basis then that players since have copied and are doing today, yet there are things he did then that no one has been able to repeat.

      Eagleson will never live that down...something he will carry to his grave. It's wrong to take advantage/steal from anyone but to do it to someone as nice and kind and polite as Bobby Orr somehow makes it even worse.

    if this is the interview where George shows a clip of Bobby throwing an elbow and waits for Mr. Orr to comment (can't re-watch to find out since it was so difficult to watch the first time and so embarrassing). Of all the clips that you can show of the greatest player ever he chooses that one! Go back to music and leave the interviews to Ron M

    I don't understand why it's so often said that Bobby Orr changed hockey. No defenseman ever had played like Bobby Orr but no one has played afterwards like Bobby Orr. Thus, no change has occurred.

    • @almo8989
      @almo8989 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was never another Bobby Orr after his career, but he did change the way defenseman played. We wouldn't have defenseman like Paul Coffey if it weren't for Bobby Orr. Before Orr, defenseman pretty much had to play defense no matter what. You look at the league now, you have defenseman that can carry the puck up ice and still come back to defend.

    • @mahtivaari72
      @mahtivaari72 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's true that Bobby Orr has been an inspiration to many players. But there is only one man in NHL history who has been at the same time the best defensive and offensive player in the league. It's Bobby Orr.

    • @mikes3827
      @mikes3827 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mahtivaari72 Because no defenseman had ever dominated like Orr, to the point using a lethal defenseman as not only the quarterback-type of player, but with his unmatched speed, opposing teams had to re-think how they would defend an attack where a defenseman was the main concern. That's why to this day, Orr has the biggest +/- differential in a single season (+124, in 1971,), while even during Gretzky's dominance with the Oilers, the best +/- he could ever muster up was +98.
      In other words, instead of the opposing team putting its main focus on stopping the forwards, Orr showed how a highly-skilled defenseman could dominate the game like never before. Then after Orr you had other HOF Dmen like Larry Robinson, Denis Potvin, Paul Coffey, etc., as other teams realized a defenseman could also be a lethal offensive threat, as well. That's how it changed.

    • @DonQwantsyou
      @DonQwantsyou 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mahtivaari72 Just because no defenseman has been as good as Orr doesn't mean he didn't effect a fundamental change in hockey. The change started with his contemporaries like Park and Robinson who played a similar attacking quarterback style, and continued with Potvin, Coffey, Bourque. However none of these players were able to combine speed, grace, vision, and opportunism as well as Orr.

    Bobby Orr was once asked "So Bobby, how does it feel to be the best hockey player of all time?"
    Bobby looked at the reporter and said "I wouldn't know, ask Wayne Gretzky."
    Bobby was a humble man, but also he knew he wasn't the best as some suggest.

    This story first was floated by Orr during Eagleson's trial, to prove Eagleson was a crook.
    THERE WAS NO SUCH OFFER.................
    Bobby did things to shorten his career. In June 1972 he was operated on and the surgeons told him STAY OFF THE DAMNED SKATES FOR 4 MONTHS, Let it heal up.
    Six weeks later Bobby was in Montreal trying to see if he could play in the 1972 Superseries. His knee blew up like a balloon, and he had to quit.
