    Hey Eric - thank you so much for posting this. I've got a 1992 Acura Integra and the brake lights were on today when I got home. I saw the same broken blue piece on the floor mat, and your video was the first google hit for "acura integra brake light stays on". One bolt and nut later, and my brake light works just fine. You totally saved me a trip - thank you very much!

    Started watching this just to figure out where the brake light switch was, and a broken plastic bit was exactly what the problem was for mine too! I used the same type of repair. Thanks!

    1993 Integra:
    Want to say Thanks Eric, I didn't have to replace the switch but the rubber bushing that the switch makes contact with as you mentioned. Don't know what happened to that rubber piece but I replaced it with a plastic fastener and works just as well.

    The plug that goes in that space is Honda part # 46505-SA5-000
    Any Honda/Acura dealer will have it in stock for about $3-5. Pretty much all Honda cars from the late 80s to late 90s used that for the brake and clutch pedal.
    No tools are required to install it....push on the pedal with one hand and push the rubber plug into the hole when you have clearance. That's it.
    I had the same problem and almost bought the OEM switch for $60. The OEM switch almost NEVER goes bad.

    Thank you so much, Eric. I had the identical issue with my 1998 Acura Integra. The plastic piece that allows the brake light switch to bottom out had disintegrated to pieces and I found the pieces on the driver's side floor. Just as you described, a hole remained and I fixed the issue with a simple nut and bolt and I didn't even have to get a new brake light switch. You're the best, Eric.

    I used a teflon chair slider to cover the hole on my 1997 Acura RL. The slider has a sticky bottom that adhered very well.

    Replaced the rubber piece that makes contact with the switch about a month ago in my 91 accord wagon due to lights always on. Haven't had cruise control since, after checking wiring and connectors I gave up and assumed it was the module, today I thought to try pulling up on the brake pedal while activating cruise, and it worked so I readjusted the switch and all is well with my cb9. just wanted to make sure I adjusted it properly, thank you Eric for the video.

  • @chevyhs
    @chevyhs 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember I hadn't used my cruise control for the longest time and when I went to use it, it didn't work. My IQ went up when I saw the rubber button was missing causing the cruise control clutch switch was missing. Installed a tiny nut and bolt and everything worked again. Thank you so much for everything you do Eric

    Had this same exact problem today on my sons 96 Tercel. Without this info, I couldn't get the switch to make contact with the "missing" cushion. (Didn't know it was missing until viewing this) Got a new cushion at the Toyota dealership, and back in business. Could of McGiver'ed it like you did, but knew the OEM part would work the first time. Your video's have been extremely helpful several times. Thank You Eric!

    2000 teg, same problem. Fixed with quarter sized felt furniture slide (sticky backed). Very impressed you were able to get access to unplug and unscrew switch. I could barely see the gap area. Removed seat maybe?

    Eric, thank you for posting this video. I was in a bind this week and had no spare money for a mechanic. I fixed my brake light issue for less than a dollar spent at Lowes! Great informative video.

    Thanks Eric. I recently purchased a ' 96 TL and after I came home from work today I went back to the garage to find the fan running and the brake lights on. The fan being on is not an issue apparently since it was over 90 today. So I thought the brake light issue was related to the fan. Wrong. I even found the broken plastic stopper piece in your video. I was thinking the previous owner pulled one over on me but, I don't think so after finding the broken pieces on the floor board. I was able to slide a vinyl nut and bolt from the opposite direction in your video. Glad I didn't have to resort to removing the switch (yet). Thanks again and take care.

    Thanks Eric! A quick stop to O'Reilly and < $9 later, I'm back in business. Same blue part others reported were on my floor mat. I initially wondered what it was, didn't think anything of it, realized over the weekend the car battery was totally dead, and hooking up a charger wasn't doing any good. Then I realized the brake lights were on. A serious hunt for the fuse (assumed it was the interior fuse box (93 Integra GS-R) but turned out to be the fuse box under the hood (makes sense, since the brake lights bypass the ignition switch). Pulled the 20A fuse to confirm it was the culprit. Went online to see if any videos existed and voila, you're popped up first. A few minutes of video, a trip to the parts store, a little help from the wife (somebody had to push the brake pedal for me to put a new stopper in place), and I'm wholly back in business.
    Kudos!!! :) :) :)

    @Jx1x3 Honda's don't have issues with the crank angle sensors or TDC sensors in my experience, I only see that with aftermarket distributors. Distributor 'o' rings are an issue but easily fixed. Honda's are not without fault but overall I think they are reliable cars and easy to work on. Thanks for your input.

  • @ericthecarguy

    @1994lebaron Without looking at it myself I can't say what the issue is but since both brake lights are out you might start by checking the brake light switch as that is one place where both circuits connect. Good luck.

    @USPhotoRecon Those fans are controlled by what is called the 'fan timer unit' located under the right side of the dash. If the fan runs for more than 30min after you shut it off it is very possible the problem is with the fan timer. Good luck.

  • @miinyoo
    @miinyoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For anyone dealing with this problem in this way. Put some kind of soft buffer around the bolt otherwise you'll wear out the switch button's surface. Something that will last until you can get a replacement plastic bit that does last over 250k miles. Mine disintegrated at 254k which is pretty cool. Lasted longer than most people. Oh. And if you have to replace the part and your clutch has one like mine does, might as well replace both. Once one fails, the other is right behind it.
    Short term good fix. 3 pennies wrapped in electrical tape works perfectly as a temporary solution. Electrical tape it to the pedal and you can at least rely on it until you get the part you need. Highly recommend a new part if you want to repair and forget about it (them) for another 20 years.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @livelife2015 You might want to watch the video again as you may not be looking in the right place, the switch and it's connector should be located above the brake pedal itself as in this video.

    I've had this problem on a Honda and a Mitsubishi too. Plastic bumper breaks and falls on the floor. $3 part at the dealer. You don't have too remove the switch. The new plastic part just pops in. Should last 10+ years or so.
    Thanks Eric.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! '90 Integra battery dead 2 nights in a row, I mean so dead that it wouldn't take a trickle charge, but the car would still jump just fine. Removed my ham radio power feed from the main fuse block thinking it perhaps shorted somewhere (of course my voltmeter died at the same time, making this much harder to diagnose). It's sunny as hell this week in Southern CA, so I didn't even notice that the brake lights were on full, if not ever so slightly because the battery was almost completely dead. Anyway, just before searching for this video, I found some odd little plastic parts on the driver's side floor. Bingo! Now I'm going to go look for a nice little bolt and nut. Thanks Eric!

    @Jx1x3 Unfortunately it seems that many of them get replaced with aftermarket units because the engine won't start, instead of figuring out if it's a coil or igniter issue they just replace the distributor, not long after that they often set a check engine light for a crank or cam sensor code.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @chrisbrunok High beams are on a separate circuit and filament in the bulb, if you replaced the bulb already you may have a grounding issue. You'll need a wiring diagram and some circuit testing equipment to track that down.

    @cupnoodles2 Brake light switches are a common issue on Hondas, you might consider just unplugging yours to see if you have power and ground to it, if you do then replace the switch and adjust it correctly and see if you still have an issue.

  • @jakeaintscary

    You can also start the engine and the vacuum produced will allow you to push the brake pedal down with one hand and provide at least 1" gap than shown! This will allow you to insert the rubber bumper stop. I used a long thin needle nose plier with a 3" nose to help me position the rubber bumper stop.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @armani9300 Tail lights are a different issue and you would need to consult the wiring diagram for the vehicle you're working on in order to find the source of that problem.

    Thanks for making this video. It helped me to understand this same problem for my 1998 Integra, when that car's brake pedal's 'stop pad' (that tiny piece of brittle plastic) finally broke into pieces this week due to age, and as a result the car's brake pedal could no longer depress the brake light switch to turn off the brake lights. I guess this happens to all Integras eventually if you keep them long enough. I have now ordered a genuine Honda/Acura part # 46505-SA5-000 (replacement brake pedal stop pad) from eBay. In the meantime I have temporarily taped a few coins in place of the plastic stop pad, until the replacement part arrives. Cheers.

    Great video - had the same problem with my 1997 Acura CL. All the plastic pieces were on the floor. Off to Walmart to try to find a bolt the exact size of the plastic piece - that I can bolt on. Why in the heck did Acura not use a metal piece rather than a plastic piece.

    I rented a 2010 Chevy Spark in Europe a couple weeks ago. The car was so cheap that it didn't even have a clutch switch. I'm so used to turning the key and pressing the clutch slightly afterward in my car to start it (probably a bad habit, I know) that I almost went straight into a wall in the Spark. The starter even had enough torque to overcome the parking brake! Lesson learned.

  • @ericthecarguy

    @roseannmiller New brakes will 'smell' for a while till they brake in. All brakes make heat it's kind of what they do. As for the install however it's important to use the correct lubricants in the correct place for the calipers to work properly, you might want to refer to the videos I did on brake pad replacement for more info on that. Good luck.
