This album fascinates the hell out of me because of the entire situation surrounding it. I agree, if they had just worked on the tracks a bit more, cut it down, and paid someone to make a proper cover it would have been a much better album. I'd emailed Ron about the cover before and he said that he drew covers more in line with the old albums but greg wanted something like the cartoons he'd draw for his band "Crash Bang Crunch Pop!". I genuinely love about half the album, and the rest is just alright... apart from "I'm Sick" which I think is the worst thing on the entire album.
It seems we share a lot of the same opinions about the album. Thanks for the info. I would love to see some of the other possible covers that Ron drew. I’m gonna check out Crash Bang Crunch Pop! Did they release any music? I’m gonna go listen to In My Head ....lol. Take care.
Chris Propfe Musically Obsessed I don’t think they ever released any music, but I found a live set of theirs. The flyer in the video is clearly the album cover’s inspiration. th-cam.com/video/BBnWB15Rawk/w-d-xo.html
I just listened to the first few songs before I saw your review thumbnail. I agree about the cover art. It looks like it belongs on an Offspring or Sublime cover, but the music is the truly important thing. While I'm not as familiar with BF as you are, I have listened to their Rollins stuff a good amount in past years. "Every time I open my mouth, I wish that I had kept it shut" is still one of my all-time favorite lyrics. All that said, I'm enjoying what I'm hearing so far. If it was a brand new band I'd never heard of, I'd think, "Wow, this is pretty cool stuff. Reminds me a lot of Black Flag."
I recall reading that band members would stress that each release would alienate their audiences because of how different it would be to their prior album. Fans of Damaged found My War side 2 too hard to consume. releases like The Process Of Weeding Out and Family Man would be too abstract. I often wonder if 'What The...' was just Greg playing his audience with another release to throw everyone off. But yeah, the background to Off My Shoulders in itself does make the album a bit of an enigma as i also dont think they play any songs off this album live either
You are correct!!! Personally, that’s what I loved about BF. They were artistic and unpredictable…but I can see how that could piss the average Punk fan off!
It's a difficult album to warm up to, but I loved "Blood and Ashes" and "Off My Shoulders" ten years ago and still do. ("Lies" is good, too. I think that track comes the closest to replicating Ginn's vintage Black Flag guitar sound.) There's definitely some filler material, and I agree that the album would have benefited from a little more focus.
I agree, What The... is not as bad as people say. Ron Reyes vocals are kind of weird for a Black Flag album. The cover art sucks. How ironic Greg Ginn's brother is doing Off! album covers and he has to settle for this.
It is exactly like you said, they all sound similar, is like Ginn sliding up and down, up and down on the guitar neck the same way, if you try to jump from one song to another nothing changes, the cover is ridicolous... why we got to say the contrary? When a band's time is up, it's over
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed let me add that what i said is about a band, that i still love and listen to, total respect for a genius like Ginn, when i listen to a bomb like full Slip It In wow man, but here i'm sorry but it doesn't work. Cheers ;)
This album would make sense in '81, i listened and liked many records from early 80s that are worse then this one. But after all the great albums they made, this makes no sense in 2013,these guys are in their 60s...and this is the sound of teen angst
Haha, I didn't know Ron Reyes did the cover. With that in mind, it's only like 99.9% as offensive as it used to be. I did listen to it maybe six months ago and was surprised that I actually kinda dug the music. Reyes and Morris are my favorite Black Flag singers, both about on the same level, in my opinion; I do love Dez and Rollins, but I prefer Rollins Band's first album to pretty much anything he did in Black Flag (it's bizarre how underrated or just plain unknown Hot Animal Machine is, considering his level of celebrity).
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed No problemo. I dig your content; subscribed. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rollins era and there's no substitute when you want to hear that, it's just those first two Black Flag releases are like my favorite punk ever (besides Flipper).
Fey, GINN owes his career to music he despises so... bring back the five piece and play the golden oldies. Have a "jazz set" so the singer can take a break and keep it interesting for the musicians. But 9/10 wanna hear DAMAGED maybe a track or two from MY WAR/ SLIP IT IN but mostly that OC hardcore that made them the SOUTHLANDS MOST DANGEROUS BAND.
I've gotta admit I was pretty excited about this album coming out because I'd seen them play three times with Ron Reyes and having heard four or five of these tracks live I had pretty high hopes. However I thought the mix was horrendous it sounded like a bootleg of the album and it really didn't sound finished at all. The silly artwork is a definitely a strike against it. However it's also got some amazing songs on it the chase is one of my favorite songs or there's my heart's pumping down in the dirt qnd there is a lot of great stuff on here. Great review.
the first song on that album cooks! Honestly, the cover doesn't bother me at all. remainds me of the Wasted... Again album art. I sorta suprised people are really that botherd by it
hi chris thank you ,i did not bought this album ,it was horrible ,i was shocked ,the best song is the chase, but i could saw them in austria 2013 with ron reyes ,really good show with maybe austrian 500 people and 1 german,me,now the black flag line up is very bad ,well they could do the songs ,but what have that to do with black flag ,they should stop :)
Chris Propfe Musically Obsessed I’ve just gotten the Jealous again 10” last week. I’m a little scared to try this one. I’ll stream it later and try to give it a fair listen
My only problem with it is the songwriting is mediocre. Similar reason i dontcare for the later henry rollins era. Henrys best songs were written before hejoined the band. Damaged is the bands best music. Everything after doesnt sound quite like black flag. Ron reyes is my personal favorite and one oftheir bestvocalist. My problem with peoples criticisms ofthis album: Album covers dont matter inthis day and age and giving serious criticisms of production quality of a hardcorepunk album is laughable. The songs just arent memorable. But itsounds like black flag and they fit right in to their catalogue imo. Keiths new stuff isnt much better than this but a lot of people are all over hisD for performing regressed watered down music where they pretend they never had time to learn more chords. Thats not too exciting either.and i like that style but i prefer a band with potential to grow.
From Raymond Pettibon artwork to Hawaiian Punch cartoon.
Lol

The problem is that there are too many songs and they sound to similar. You’re right…there are some good tracks regardless.

Good point. I would have loved to see a Pettibon cover on this album. Off! rules by the way!

Yes, prefer a Pettibone art cover

I’ve gotten 3 or 4 flag records, yet to get anything with Henry on it yet

Shawn Siciliano it’s awesome! Take the dive
Chris Propfe Musically Obsessed I gave it a shot. I dunno, maybe if it wasn’t titled a black flag record
My war
Just listened to Off my shoulders. It's not my taste
It’s definitely not classic BF.
Bonnie Vincent 🎉
Not too familiar with much black flag. Just gave this one a listen to. It's not too bad, lots of energy
Listen to the album Loose Nut. You might like it. More Metal sounding on that album.

Not a huge fan of this record.
The chase is the only decent song on this album. Saw them on this tour. Terrible album and artwork.
Saw them live a couple of years ago…pretty much just to see Ginn.
the music is fine but the vocals by Ron reyes are terrible on most tracks
His voice is interesting. Lol
DAMAGE lp a disappointment to me. Unpopular BF release? I might like it. Jealous Again the best by leaps over all for me
Damaged is definitely not my favorite BF album.
Hey Chris - so Chavo's back huh? I'll give it a listen. Thanks for the tip.
Welcome back, Chavo! Lol. Let me know what you think after you listen.
