It's the _"capital"_ of the Alawites/Nusayrites.. That's why during the war, Latakia remained basically untouched and a safe haven for Alawites. If Assad had lost the war, the Islamist fundamentalists/jihadists would've probably carried out the greatest genocide of the 21st century! Just like ISIS treated _"normal"_ Shias _(Alawites are considered too) or the Yezidis. Under their doctrine, anyone but Sunni muslims, Christians and Jews even have the right to live. The rest has the option to convert or death. Just as we saw during the brutal days of ISIS rule in Syria and Iraq. I've watched the clips made by ISIS. They were produced in a very professional way. In high definition, with multiple cameras and staged like Hollywood films. The clips were really haunting, because of the explicitness. Decapitation with _(not that sharp)_ knives, blowing chained up people up, with small bombs around their head, putting their prisoners in a car and shooting at it with an RPG, or burning alive this Jordanian Air Force captain. These practices were even criticized by hardcore wahabi Saudi preachers. Who basically are in line with the theology of ISIS. But they said that in Islam, decapitation has to be enforced with the strike of a sharp sword. In contrast to ISIS butter knives. And that only God is allowed to burn people. So yeah, even for the craziest Saudi Wahabi preaches, the people of ISIS were a bit to crazy! I'm glad that the government of Syria prevailed in this war. Even though Assad is not a Western style democratic leader, he was the protector of ALL religions minorities. But of course also for the Sunni majority, who not all are religious fanatics and supporters of their organizations/armies.
I am also glad that you are able appreciate its own beauty far from any geopolitical nonsense… Jabal Aqraa in the distance ( ? Mount Cassius) was highly revered holy place for the ancient locals, you should go visit it again in winter when it is snow capped!
