22 498 Steps Later | The Jonkershoek Hike | Stellenbosch | Cape Town | South Africa

When we woke up on this day we thought it would be a stroll in the park at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve which is 1 of 10 nature reserves in Cape Town. It covers the area of approximately 11 hectares. The reserve lies north of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains and the area includes the Jonkershoek Mountains housing the origin of the Eerste River & Berg River.
Upon arriving we were informed we need to walk an additional 5km due to maintenance on the drive in road (to and from) our desired destination. This was something we definitely did not plan for which is why the hike took us most of the day starting at 11h00 and finishing 18h30.
Hiking in the blistering heat of 31 degrees tested our patience, endurance and drive. The experience was unconformable, with the sun beating down on us relentlessly as you’ll see in this vlog. Half way through walking to the hiking trail starting point we felt a sense of fatigue and hopelessness applying layers of sun screen in the hope of not getting sun burnt.
There is a saying: It is the journey, not the destination. In this case the waterfall destination definitely made up for the challenging journey of 15.94km’s.
