    1:05 that is "keladi" = yam 🍠
    The chalet you stayed is traditional "rumah melaka" design. The signature characteristic is the colorful stairs

      Oh, I’m glad it is a traditional design! I was making an assumption and thought I could be wrong 😂 but we saw lots of beautiful homes in that style in the area, so it did seem traditional 😁
      We have never cooked yam before, so we didn’t know what it looked like naturally 😂
      Thank you 😊

      Malays have a popular saying:
      _bagai mencurah air ke daun keladi_
      _bagai_ = like, as if
      _mencurah_ = pouring
      _air_ = water
      _ke_ = to, onto
      _daun_ = leaf
      _keladi_ = yam
      So the literal translation is: like pouring water onto yam's leaf

    That brown fruit looking thing at the beginning of the vid is a taro root. It's classified as a vegetable. Have to be careful with raw taro because it can cause itchiness. Can be used like a potato. Locals call it 'ubi keladi'.
    Think you missed out on a chance to try a coconut fruit while you had a free for all at the guesthouse. In an older coconut that's about to sprout some leaves, there would be a yellow crunchy fruit growing inside the coconut called sprouted coconut which tastes delicious and tastes nothing like a coconut. You cant buy it in a store. Hope you guys get to try one someday.
    Those things sliding around are mudskippers, an amphibious fish actually.
    Looking forward to your next stop.

    • @adventureswithtoyahandmurray
      @adventureswithtoyahandmurray  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the information!! We have had taro lots of times, but we have never cooked it, so we had no idea what they looked like 🤣
      I wish we knew about the coconut fruit before, but now that we know, we will try to remember if we have another opportunity like that again in the future.
      Mudskippers are so cool 😍

    • @jonmath4182
      @jonmath4182 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crunchy "fruit" inside the coconut is called _tombong kelapa_ in malay, _kelapa_ is coconut and _tombong_ is that somewhat round shaped, creamy yellow colored, crunchy thing which is unique to coconuts, and it is actually an embryo of the coconut. After splitting open the coconut shell, you can simply pluck it off the inside of the coconut with your hand or with a clean knife and eat it just like that. Apart from being crunchy, it also has a texture similar to an apple or cotton candy - very very light. The taste is slightly creamy and may be slightly sweet as well, and very popular among small kids

    Aah Kuala Linggi - Kuala Sungai Baru - sg udang Route...... Places of interest around there before you went onto the bridge over the Linggi river, you can take a boat and visit the brass crocodile sanctuary, then after the bridge you can go to the NUSA Dusun area (there is the pineapple Plantation and you can stay at the fionanas resort) you can also drive to the turtle sanctuary at pengkalan balan, and may be you can participate in the release of the baby turtles).
