Considered to be one of the most historic churches in the county, St John’s Church in Knockainey, County Limerick, is surrounded by an atmospheric graveyard containing some very old graves and interesting mausolea.
St John’s Church is located in the centre of Knockainey, a small rural village midway between the towns of Bruff and Hospital, and approximately 25km from Limerick City.
"Old graveyards with a scatter of lichen-encrusted gravestones and trees standing to attention rank amongst the most evocative features of the Irish landscape." (taken from Patrick J. O'Connor; Some Studies of the Irish Scene, Irish Landscape Series no. 2). This line could have been written with St John’s Church, Knockainey, in mind. The church is also covered in lichen and with its boundary wall and sexton’s house nearby, creates an attractive and harmonious group.
There were churches on this site since medieval times but the most recent was erected in 1861 by the Church of Ireland. The tower and spire are free standing and belong to an earlier church, built pre 1762. The graveyard contains many interesting graves and mausolea, several resting side by side are grass covered and barrel vaulted, with the door at the end, and the undulating effect on the graveyard is stunning. The oldest grave dates back to 1736.
On entering the church today, it is just as if a service is about to begin. The sacred ambience remains, as stained glass windows, wall memorials, pews, pulpit, communion rails and holy table are all in place. The memorials provide important historical information on local families. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and Knockainey Historical and Conservation Society organises a successful series of concerts and events throughout the year in the church.

Your videos have helped to cure me of my fear of graveyards. I used to have nightmares about them, but your calm and admiring approach to them has enabled me to perceive the beauty and peace that resides in such places. However, your exposure of open coffins is still a little scary to me! Better than watching a horror film! As the Coca Cola advertisement used to say, "It's the real thing"!

John I would never have done what I'm doing years ago, some people don't like it but I'm fascinated by it all, oh I was scared walking inside the mausoleums pity I couldn't record bit I had to respect his wishes, now that was creepy but I still did it

Walking through this graveyard carries you back to the 18th century, it looks right out of the History books. It could easily be used as a set for a remake of Bram Stoker's Dracula! Or any other classical horror story. To have items dating back to the 17th century and so close to the 16th it is less than a lifetime away from it! Stunning and the inscriptions written in Latin too! Seriously incredible!! You have, in that single graveyard, history spanning five centuries!!! Absolutely Incredible!! Thank you so much for sharing it with me! I simply cannot get enough of history, so thank you again!!

I love your channel. I kept hearing Ron (FOF) talk about you and Irish eyes, so I looked for your channel and now I’m binge watching. I have visited Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, often times with my son who shared my love for the country, the culture, the people, the ruins, and yes, even the graveyards. Watching your channel brings back all those times he and I spent together, especially in Ireland, which he loved the most. He always claimed to be 100% Irish ( he wasn’t, of his grandparents only my dad was Irish, but he didn’t care, he was Irish). His name was Colin, and he died 4 years ago, and his mama is forever broken. I miss my “Irish” boy so very much. But your channel brings me back to the joy I had traveling with him.

What an amazing historical Churchyard Sue.It was really worth the visit..The fist Mausoleum seems odd that there is no sign of the coffins, yet the bones seem to be in multiples in those little raised areas.I have never seen one like that before .It was great that the man came out.You would never have seen the inside of those two mausoleums ,or even found the grave of the extremely old gentleman. The 1600+ tome was a beautiful piece of art ,a shame it’s outside now .But the carving on it is exquisite…So much to see in this one.Thank you for showing us ..Love n Light 🥰

This might be my new favorite… the first crypt fascinated me…it didn’t appear to have any coffins inside, just stone & mortar openings. The man who was cursed & then left to lie in state for 5 days…can you imagine the stench? My grandfather lied in state in his home for 3 or 4 days in the early 1950’s. He had 8 children-I cannot imagine what my father & his siblings saw…

That was absolutely brilliant Sue !! I love the way you grit your teeth and “go for it!” Like a little terrier, your determined to get to see inside a mausoleum or read writing high up on walls, anywhere, and you do it… well done you! That said, that first mausoleum gave us ALL a bit of a shock too I think….about six sculls altogether, and I can’t work out how that came to be, as each body needed time to become a skeleton, BEFORE the bones could be placed with others….so where did that happen? At first I thought it was a mother and child burial on the left, but as you got to grips with your camera gImble it became more like the setting for a Bram Stoker film! Incredible. Your so lucky in Ireland to have so many old but still intact engraved, beautifully engraved stones! But one that still has me chuckling is the graved of the gentleman who “dyed” aged 219!!! Whatever was his secret to longevity!? Do you think it was a pint of Guinness a day Irish Eyes? 🍀…..lol.
Thankyou so much Sue…Historic indeed, not forgetting the 300yr old plus Altar and stunning glass windows! Very glad those gentleman came to show you more too. Great job! 🙋‍♀️😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🦋🌻 xxx

Wasn't it the most historic place, such beauty in there, amongst the dead, wasn't expecting to find those remains very strange alright only thing I was told by a subscriber here was they may not have had coffins but maybe shrouds, I pinned the comment above ❤

Thank you for the video I found it so interesting and yes the church is beautiful. I am in GB so I love to see Irish cemeteries my great grandparents came over from Cork years ago now but sadly I can't trace them in Ireland. Thanks again Sue 💜

This might sound awful but if it was up to me,both the bloody judge and that other guy in the plain coffin would’ve been buried in a desolate place with only each other for company.pair had no respect for others.God Bless you both.

I suppose they own that mausoleum and that's where the family put them, he had a very bad death according to folklore so I believe he got his ❤

Thankyou Sue that was absolutely fascinating. One could spend a couple of days there and still not take the whole lot in. Inthe crypt where you found the bones, was there ever any cover over them or were they entombed in the open.It was great to see inside that church a lot of history there. That bright red door certainly looks a bit out of place with that centuries old church. Loved it
