Coincidentally, a whisky friend and I tried this last night at a local bar. Our collective impression was that it was 'just okay': the overripe stone fruit notes were a bit too syrupy sweet and they didn't mesh well with the Campbeltown funk. It just didn't fall into either of our wheelhouse as far as style preference goes. Glad that it hit home for you. Thanks for the review.
So you are saying their is a cure for the Fomo!?! I guess that would be the one upside of it not really being your preferred style. Everyone can chase after it and maybe you can scoop up some of what they miss as a result. I definitely get the stone fruit notes thinking back to it. I personally thought it wasn't nearly as "syrupy sweet" as the SB10 PX whihc I found to be too much, but that doesn't negate at all how sweet you found it. Still, awesome that you and your friend managed to try it. Thanks for watching as always. Cheers eh! 🥃
John I hope you find this SB 10 Palo in you glass someday soon. I would have loved to find my way to a bottle but it wasn't in the cards. Still feel lucky to have tried it at all. Cheers my friend🥃
Really pleased you reviewed this one Matt. This has been on my wish list since it was released, but surprise surprise, I've never been able to get my hands on a bottle!
On my wish list too my friend. Very hard to find a bottle of it at all, much less a reasonable price. Hope you happen to find it waiting for you on a liquor store shelf near you. Cheers buddy 🥃
Haha, they're trying everything these days. I'm all for experimentation but the best Springbank I ever had was pushing 3 decades in ex-bourbon so sometimes experimentation isn't all it's cracked up to be. Still, this was enjoyable. Cheers buddy 🥃
It pretty much fixed the problems I had with the PX release - The Palo Cortado doesn’t overwhelm the peat and the funk. It’s a great expression of the Springbank 10 😃
Yeah, 100% this. The Palo Cortado is just much more Springbank-y than the PX. It is exactly as it was advertised; Springbank with Palo Cortado flair. Glad you're enjoying your bottle man. Cheers 🥃
Nice review! It’s great to get your take on it. I have yet to try a Palo Cortado finished/matured whisky. I have been tempted by the Glenmorangie but never went for it. Cheers, Matt!
Thanks Sheldon! I have had about 3-4 pours out of the Glenmo Palo bottle and am liking it more and more. The 1st pour I was a little skeptical but it is getting better with each pour. I grabbed it at $73 and am happy at that price. Wouldn't pick it up at full price, let alone the U.K.price. Cheers buddy 🥃
Sounds like you're shooting 100% with Palo Cortado! The Dunvilles sounds interesting! Outside of IB's that Glenmo Palo 12 is the reference point in my mind these days for Palo Cortado. The more I dig into it the more I am enjoying it. Cheer Jack 🥃
Thanks Rick! Yeah, the palate keeping up or exceeding the nose is always a big plus. Can't help but feel a let down when it goes the other way. Hope you get to try this one too. Cheers 🥃
“Fruit leather” he said. Love it. I enjoyed a bar pour in Glasgow, but doubt I’ll ever find that bottle in the “wild”. Glen Scotia “The Mermaid” has an eight month Palo Cortado finish. Very sweet on arrival, but not cloying or lasting sweetness. I wish it was Peated, but I’m enjoying it regardless. Cheers.
I'm glad you were able to experience this gem in Glasgow. It was an experience you you were able to bring home with you even if a bottle of it is not. It is particularly sad the pricing of these bottles in your market(California right? Or am I wrong?). I've heard anecdotally of the SB Palo Cortado being sold for $500 USD in San Fran. Hoping to come across a sample of that Glen Scotia Mermaid as it does sound rather interesting. Glad you're enjoying it Tim! Cheers buddy! 🥃
I think that's an underrated opinion. I remember last year in my 10 PX tasting the Springbank 10 place 2nd or 3rd out of the 8. The 10 is almost always among the best you can get.12CS is almost always my favourite when I have been so lucky to grab it and this particular batch of 10 wasn't to my preference but honestly, the first time I've ever came across a 10 that I was even a little bit let down by. Victim of it's own success perhaps. Cheers Pete and thank goodnes we have SB 10 🥃
Nice one Matt! I've made my peace with not being able to try these releases a couple of years back. If I find it at a bar, great but I won't chase bottles or samples and pay ridiculous prices. I was able to try the PX and the Longrow Red Tawny port last year even after 2 months of their release at a bar, but the same bar was sold out of this just 1 week after it's release so that kinda tells you where things are. Thankfully we have online friends like you to tell us about these whiskies :) Cheers dude 🥃
Man, I totally get where you are at with chasing these down. It is a very unfulfilling task that I've pretty much given up on as well. I get a chance to enter a ballot when I buy into these tastings so I entered that, but I've stopped trying to catch these releases. And honestly, at the prices I didn't even enter for the Longrow and Hazelburn 21 year, the price was just too much. Great appearance by the way on the Whiskytube roundtable, it was a really enjoyable listen and I definitely felt like I could relate. It looked like you had an awesome time at Deanston man. Keep up the great work. Cheers Sertug 🥃
Man, I hope you get your hands on a bottle soon. It really is a chore and something I have pretty much given up on getting in any way other than a ballot. Just don't have the time to hunt it anymore. But I always feel lucky when it graces my glass. Cheers buddy 🥃
Thanks for watching! I hope it is too, but sadly I don't think it is. Last person I know who saw it on a shelf saw it for $500 USD. Ouch... Cheers eh 🥃
Matt, for me the Springbank 10 PC is better than the PX, as it has notes of Orange, which drives me crazy. Fettercairn 16yo from 2021 is Oloroso and Palo Cortado and is 🧨🧨🧨😉🥃🥃
Sounds like we're on the same page with the PC over the PX. I recently really loved the Fettercairn 18 and have been eyeing up a more recent Fettercairn 16. If I find an old 2021 16 year I'll try to jump on it. Thanks for the Palo Cortado tip! Cheers 🥃
I was damn lucky to get 15ml of this one. Probably won't see it in my glass again. definitely was lucky. Hope a dram of it finds its way into your glass one day too. Cheers 🥃

I really enjoyed the PX sample I was given and would gladly pay upwards of $200… looking forward to this Palo as well…. Hopefully 🤞
Cheers 🥃

Great review. If you ever get the chance, do the Fundador sherry tour in Jerez...you'll get to see the yeast layer in action.
Oh that sounds super cool! Next time I walk the Camino de Santiago I'll be sure take some time in Jerez afterwards. Cheers eh 🥃

Port-sk(e)y ! . . . strange combo. Good vid.

Excellent information, also, a great whisky. Thanks for the walk through and the conversation. Cheers!
Thanks for stopping in Jon! It was a pleasure to be able to simply try this one. Hope you are well friend. Cheer 🥃

Only had the Glenmorangie 12 Palo Cortado and the Dunvilles Palo Cortado Irish. Loved them both!

Thanks for the great review, Matt! I like that you thought the palate exceeded the nose, which is a good sign. 🥃
Thanks Rick! Yeah, the palate keeping up or exceeding the nose is always a big plus. Can't help but feel a let down when it goes the other way. Hope you get to try this one too. Cheers 🥃

I prefer the standard releases to these and the rum wood. I don't dislike them but the 10 , 12CS or 15 are more to my taste.

Missed the chance to set Springbank at the last lottery in QC. Really want to try out a full bottle vs a sample. The hunt is on!

Nice, thank you, just hope that this will be available and for affordable price :) cheers

I saw this bad boy in the whisky shop in San Fran and got very excited...until I saw the $$$ price 😭😭
So it does exist, but sadly in the whisky museum's of San Fran. What a tease. How much were they asking James? Cheers buddy 🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast $500 USD 🤯
@jameswrightesq Get outta here haha😭 That's ridiculous 😂
The real question here is : how to get one bottle/ one sample / on drop...of the nectar 😅
(be quick or be... No springbank!)
I was damn lucky to get 15ml of this one. Probably won't see it in my glass again. definitely was lucky. Hope a dram of it finds its way into your glass one day too. Cheers 🥃
