Sunday Longplay Challenge - Top Gear (SNES) - Red Car, Manual, No Nitros, Championship

- This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm doing another self-imposed challenge to celebrate two milestones: the 10-year anniversary of my most popular series on TH-cam, and 1 million views on the first episode of said series! Welcome to a special challenge for Top Gear on SNES! The rules for this challenge are:
1. Use the slow-accelerating, gas-guzzling red car.
2. Use manual transmission. (I used automatic in my last playthrough 10 years ago)
3. Play on Championship difficulty.
4. No Nitro Boosts.
5. Finish 1st place overall in each country. (1st place on every race is impossible because some tracks are just too flat to get any good speed boosts without using a nitro. Rome in particular was a struggle to even finish in the top 5 to qualify for the next race!)
This challenge was actually a lot harder than I would have previously given it credit for. Like I said, some tracks are impossible to get 1st place on without using nitros, and I actually failed to qualify in Rome a couple times. On the other side, it also exemplifies why the Black Forest is my favorite track in the game. 300+ km/h with no nitro required? Yes please!
I wasn't expecting my Top Gear videos to blow up the way they did, but thank you all, especially the South American audience, for making it happen! This is for you! I'm glad this game gets the recognition it deserves down there to make up for its relative obscurity here in the United States.

Very nice video, MetalSmasherGamer! This is exactly what I was looking for, here on TH-cam, for such a long time: Red Car ("Cannibal") + Championship Difficulty + Manual Transmission + No Nitros. You are the very first one that I watched performing this legit challenge, in it's entirety, here. I consider not using nitros, in the championship difficulty, the real challenge in this game.
Had this game when I had my SNES, a long time ago, but decided to play it again, now only via emulator (Snes9x), since I don't have my SNES anymore… Love it very much: from the memorable soundtrack to the simple playability. Such an addictive game!
I managed to accomplish this challenge myself as well (I haven't recorded it due to my hardware limitations). However, I must say that I did have a tough time with Rome (Italy) and Nice (France).
Rome is such a flat circuit. It must be one of the easiest tracks of the game, regarding its design, since it's very wide and without sharp corners. However, it's the trickiest amongst the circuits, to me: its flatness is a great problem, since it prevents us from reaching a good top speed against the AI, not to mention that its length, combined with 6 laps, do consume a substantial amount of gas. Besides, the AI is very overpowered in that circuit (contrary to what happens in the Black Forest circuit, for instance). Nice is one tough circuit, with many obstacles scattered throughout the track, some narrow passages and has a tricky pit stop entrance (not as tricky as the one at Black Forest, though). It's less flatter than the Rome circuit, but it still imposes some difficulty to overcome the AI to get a qualification position (
Rome was the only track where I failed to qualify, and I think I failed a few times before I finally just barely bade it. Definitely the hardest track for this challenge just because of how flat it is therefore not allowing opportunity for some downhill speed boosts without nitros. Combine that with the other racers having infinite fuel and having no need to use the pits, and I legit thought I was done there. Nice didn't give me that much trouble, honestly.
I'd say my top 5 favorite tracks are:
1) Black Forest - Even without using a nitro you can break 325 km/h! The speed potential is real!
2) Chichen Itza - Same as Black Forest. Maybe not quite as fast as Black Forest, but still great fun nonetheless!
3) London - Usually my favorite track in a racing game is one of the longer tracks, and as the longest race in the game, this one ranks up there though it's not my absolute favorite.
4) Bordeaux - I agree with you completely. It's a challenging track, but I love a good challenge. It tests you to your limits, and the downhill boost at the end of one lap transitioning to the next also makes it great fun!
5) Helsinki - You're right, it is a beautiful track, and again, great fun to be had from the downhill speed boosts!
And yes, I agree Cologne is the hardest track in the game. You get a downhill boost near the beginning, but you can't even use it because you have to slow down to get around the series of extremely tight corners that follow! And though Stonehenge is a pretty easy track, it can go right down to the wire gas-wise with the red car.

I'm amazed on how you managed to drive smoothly without hitting opponents cars or even road sharp curves. Great gameplay indeed.
Here in Brazil, everyone played all three Top Gear games, because game's simply too good. And I still play them by an emulator I've on Android.
That's great! They're great games for sure, but sadly they didn't get the same recognition in the United States. I'm glad to see other parts of the world recognize this game's beauty.
@@MetalSmasherGaming I think that's by the fact game was done by same creators from Lotus and maybe have something to do about car TV show you've in US has same name than the game.

Great racing! Your depth perception to avoid hits is better than mine ever was. They really should have programmed the Razor to be able to accelerate in 4th gear like the Cannibal does [though not as much] to make it a viable car choice, since otherwise it just has nothing going for it. My favorite was always the Weasel since you could still corner on the tight tracks, it had good Nitro boost, and the fuel consumption and top speed was good enough to be able to still win any track. As your play showed the Cannibal is awesome but it does struggle in some countries.
This is really a super play.
I myself was able to finish 1st in the points ranking in all 8 stages without using nitro, with level=championship, blue car (automatic).
However, it wasn't a complete victory so far, but a rather narrow victory.
By the way, my favorite course is "Tokyo".

Can you do challenges like this for the other two Top Gear games? Great job with this one.
I could try another no-nitro challenge, but I don't think I could take it a step further with no car upgrades in those games. *That* would probably be impossible.
I always pick the white car and the automatic option. I know on some of the other difficulties no matter the car, if you don't pick manual you don't have a chance. Even with the boosts. I think the pit areas should replenish boosts especially on the longer tracks.
That was the option I always chose as a kid too. Manual is definitely tougher because you always have to keep an eye on your speed and shift accordingly, and using a lower gear is more taxing on your gas gauge, which could spell trouble on tracks like Cologne, Monaco, or other longer races with no pit stops.
I leave here how I liked it for its gameplay, I always wanted to make a campaign using the red car, without the use of nitro, as you did, you can see that in some tracks the lack of nitro hindered the conquest of the first place, but for the challenge was wonderful, one question did you use the normal nintendo controller or a more advanced one? Looking at your gameplay I remembered when I played in arcades near home, after running in japan my fingers were creating calluses! it hurt so much that I asked the arcade's owner to put black duct tape around the thumbs! Thank you very much! your video I watch from beginning to end, even because you can consider a heretic who skips the home screen! A hug from Brazil! He cares for himself!

One question though, I noticed the CPU didn't use its Nitro. If the player doesn't use it, the CPU doesn't too?
In my playthrough 10 years ago where I did use nitros, the CPU didn't use any there either. So I think the CPU just doesn't use its nitros period.
@@MetalSmasherGaming The CPU opponent has a strange combo vehicle setup no matter what car you actually see. It uses about as much fuel as the Cannibal, but has a slightly higher top speed than the Razor, but accleration that is a little slower than the Weasel. I've also noticed that, perhaps due to the programming, when the CPU is stopped in the pits you will gain speed faster, most noticeably when going down hills. And as you said the CPU never uses Nitros.

I try also the Red car without Nitro in first 3 countries, but I got annoyed when tracks in Germany are long and narrow, so ritchie cheats and sucks. Hahahaha.
Can you do it with the white one? Because I never made the New York track.

Do you know what would be an even greater challenge? Doing the same with the *purple car*, also known as the shittiest one.
And without cutting between the tracks...
I do want to eventually play this game again with the other cars.
I used to grind this kind of challenge years ago with all 4 cars, but mostly on England at the top difficulty. I found that if you are driving the Sidewinder, if you get bad RNG it is impossible to win without Nitro on Stonehedge, because Ritchie or Paul may have a set time finish that is faster than the Sidewinder can possibly catch, even with back bumps from the CPU opponent all along the way, since the 18 other racers instantly get off the line at their top speed at the start. The other 2 sprint races in England you have a chance because of the hills where you can pick up speed, but you still end up have to block the CPU opponent at times to stay ahead. London you win because of only needing one stop in the pits and the hills allow you to catch Ritchie or Paul before the end.
