How did you measure? The deep cut at around 80-90 Hz could be a result of the measuring room, since booth speakers show it nearly identical. And a cut of almost 10db is quite a lot for a monitor speaker.

I have the focal alpha 80s and have tested the Yamaha HS8 and would like to give some help for the people trying to decide. The HS8s are really great in the mid and high range but in my opinion lack in low end/Bass. not to say that they don't have bass but just don't have the boom. they do great clear sound and are great monitors.
the focal alpha 80 are great as well! they don't have quite as crisp highs but they still have great clarity in the midst and highs. but the low end in these monitors is spectacular. with the front facing bass ports the background doesn't affect the bass as much with muddiness. in my opinion the alphas are probably some of the best monitors in the price range. I would personally choose the alphas. the bass in the alphas is just supreme. hope this helps!

I had the HS8s and I loved everything about them but they were slightly harsh when mixing for long hours. now I own Alpha 80s and ADAM Audio(as my main monitors), Alphas are definitely not harsh and more balanced but as a hip hop producer I miss the low end and punch I was getting from HS8s to be honest(every time). If you own HS8s then don't buy anything else unless you itching yourself with extra cash, just take more breaks for the ears thou. Peace!

I'd try toeing them out 10 degrees or so. Should knock down some of the treble gain a bit. Alternately, use DSP correction to bring down any peaks in the treble that you find particularly fatiguing. The HS8 are quite neutral and linear and rely a lot on room gain to have particularly powerful bass impact, but they're also nowhere near perfect, so DSP correction can make a significant improvement.

    • @mndlessdrwer
      @mndlessdrwer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@steve5662 Most of the speakers from Adam have a bit of added bass gain, sometimes at the cost of midrange detail retrieval. The HS5 don't have much bottom end because Yamaha refuses to compromise their midrange performance to eke out more bass extension. Once their driver reaches its natural bass extension they just let it roll off and instead expect you to buy a subwoofer to compensate. It gets expensive or DIY if you want a studio monitor with neutral tuning that can play down to 20Hz without needing a subwoofer. The HS8 doesn't even dig that low with its 8" woofer.

To my ears (and I'm listening this on Grado Sr325e headphones) Focal has a sound that is closer to the original file, but Yamaha has a more articulate and in-your-face sound. I think there's a risk that your mixes can sound quite dull on other sound systems, if you rely entirely on the Yamaha sound. 🤔

I had the HS7 and then switched to the alpha 50. Wow, the Yamaha got crushed in almost everything except raw power, which I don't care about because I have a small sudio/office room. The Alpha 50's have better clarity, 3D depth and spacial awareness of the location of each sound. And the smoothness. Wow. I will never buy Yamaha again and have become a total Focal fanboy.

I once read a review stating that the Focal Alpha 80 is coloured sounding, in the video i can hear the mids and especially the high mids being a bit muffled while the Yamaha HS8 sounds more clean. I’ve had the chance of trying the Alpha 80 monitors out and from my experience i’m not that impressed i think the upper register is not present and clean enough, when i play piano for example it doesn’t sound clear like there is a blanket in front of the Speakers. Yes they are easy on the ears which is nice in a way but bright sounding instruments like Flutes lack presence which means that the high mids are a bit recessed . The Yamaha HS8 seems better overall but the treble is a little too energetic from what i can hear

    Very strange!!!
I heard the comparisons on here and thought the Yamaha's sounded better.
But then I got to hear them in DV247.
The Focal Alphas had a more flat frequency response, better bass extension and a kicking stereo image.
The Yamaha's were more mono and pushed the mid frequencies a bit.

HS8 sounds here a bit like Mackie monitors have sounded before on this channel compared to other monitors, a bit forwardy. And what I've read about Mackie's is that they are good to mix on low volume. Also, correct me if im wrong, but i think this quality makes them easier to work in an untreated room. I also think that HS8 might be nicer to listen to casually, even though many have said it could be more fatiguing. Edit: this "forwardy" sound actually makes them sound more closer to the original tracks than focal.

Don’t forget that the Focal is front-ported, so with this technique of capturing, it’s pretty biased. I’ve used the Alpha 50 before and sold it to get the HS8 because of the hype of it being “flat”. But the HS8 sounds distorted on high levels which can be really annoying. While the Alpha 50 is actually a higher quality monitor, it was crazy how detailed and natural it was. Needless to say, I completely regret my desicion. The Alpha 80 is next on my list :)

Usually manufacturers design larger monitors to be listened farther away. Yeah i heard some people online with every brand talk about how the 5 and 6 inch monitors have "better" mid range. Its only better if the listener is too close to 8 inch monitors which would cause the time alignment between drivers to be off.

    Listening on monitors. My impressions:
Focal 80 - Better spatial placement of instruments, deeper 3d soundstage, more engaging mids, darker highs, more prominent in lows, somewhat loose/flabby/tubby bass and low mids.
Yamaha HS8 - Poor flat soundstage, Everything upfront, reverb tail is more in your face apparent, more present highs, tighter bass, more neutral sound overall.
Overall I think I will prefer the HS8 in this case as a studio monitor(but I would stay away from both tbh :D)

Dark Suns this video does the Focals no justice. They are incredibly tight and very detailed, blowing away most other reference monitors at the $1k a pair price point. They also have a very bright high end, which is why this video really doesn’t show how they really are. I own a pair, used to mix with them, and they are at times too bright. Due to the custom Focal beryllium tweeter.

I own Yamaha HS50 and Focal Shape50 the expensive brothers of the Focal Alpha. The Yamaha sound its quite mid frequency pronounced. The impression when you listen both side by side is that Yamaha have more clarity and Focal sound more natural and slightly pronounced in the mid bass frequencies.
But that's only the listening experience when you compare them. The thing changes when you start to working with them. In my case mostly production and mixing. When I am mixing with HS50 I'm always coming to the point where I just start guessing what happening in the sound because not enough separation, transparency and articulation in the sound. Whit the Shape50 no guessing anymore. The speakers are very fast which contributes very nice articulation of the sound even in the lower frequency. They have very nice stereo separation. The tonal balance is really nice even in my small room with no treatment(i made measurements). When I bought the Focal Shape 50 I spend three days to listening them. The fourth day I switched back to the HS 50. Oh boy, that was like listening music thru smartphones 😂 I still love my HS50, I had them more than ten years, but after Shape 50 I can't imagine myself going back to the Yamahas

+1 i had the hs50 for about 4 years. I think the sound is quite intriguing, you think the voices sound great because the mids are way too overpowered. It sounds great for a few minutes but your ears get fatigued way too fast, the Yamahas don't have a neutral sound at all. I got the Mackie mr524 on Friday, this is the best 5 inch studio monitor that i heard in the last years, such a great sound.

I was looking into these, the Alpha already cost close to 2x of HS. I didn't look into 5s but Shape 65 cost more than 3x the price of HS7. If you are comparing shape50, compare them to something like KH120A, which is still 100-200 cheaper per pair and are better speakers.
If you are in EU you may consider focal, but if you are in NA, don't. They charge a huge premium to NA customers. For example after currency conversion, KH120A cost about the same in US and UK, for Focal, shape 50 cost less than 500 USD before VAT in UK. Yes, if you live in US, you are paying shape money for Alpha.

Sorry, there are way to many electronic instruments and productions. But it´s in their nature to produce a sound in the way the producer or musician wants it to be. Look at the use of compressors for example. If you want to demontrate the nature of a monitor speaker then give him some acoustic instruments, for example grand piano or a solo viola etc. But with this audiofiles it´s nearly impossible to get an impression of how neutral these speakers are.

I've got the HS8's and their clarity is fantastic you can tell they're proper studio monitors they're well balanced throughout the ranges you get the feeling what you put in you get out no colouring, the only "issue" (it's not really an issue I'm just highlighting it) is if you want that deep coloured low end bass you get with Techno etc they lack a bit of that but you would get that from a coloured system anyway these are meant to be precise and they do exactly that I doubt anyone would be disappointed if they bought them and they're far clearer than any KRK's I've heard they sound muddy in comparison to the HS8's, if you really craved that coloured bass you could buy the sub for them and I'm talking in a relaxing and listening to music sense they're fantastic when mixing
Also I actually think they might be too powerful for the room I have them in, if I remember rightly I barely have mine turned up to a quarter on the rear dials and they're very loud, like really really loud and that's with all my levels on my Kontrol S8 barely getting past the second square and the gains at about 10 o'clock
Honestly though the point I highlighted is really a non issue these are superb speakers

I miss the low mid focus in Alphas, seems bit too much, while HS 8 seems well balanced and tight across this part of spectrum. Also HS 8 provide at least here slightly better spatial reference. They also seem to sound more upfront in the mids, while retain the clear open highs in the end, where as Aphas seem bit laid back across the hi-mids, but that could be caused by bit pushed and muddy lower mid end, but at the very low end Alpha's seem to perform really great. Its funny that over the less busy tracks with live instruments I would choose Alphas, where within electronica I prefer Yammies - unlike a friend sitting next to me, having wildly different preferences.

I heard all the hs series so many times and I still cant get into them. The tweeter never sounds like it blends well with the mid and theres a boost in the upper mid range possibly at the crossover frequency. They all sound like theyre just missing that lower midrange that would give the sound a bit of warmth. For a speaker with an aluminum tweeter I prefer the sound of the mackie XR.

They both do the thing that I really appreciate in a good 2-way speaker design: they don't try to squeeze more bass extension out of their drivers at the cost of midrange detail retrieval. They just used a bigger woofer with enough agility and a high enough breakup point and just relied on sheer surface area to produce bass, then they tuned out the gain in the mids so everything is balanced. It's the same approach that Bose takes, but done using actually good drivers so you don't end up with flabby bass and weird treble.
