I love how the game ends with you silently sitting on the throne. All the other endings showed the reward for your quest being good, but this one shows you that THIS is what you've wanted. You've come all this way, betrayed your family, and fought through hardships all for this.
Then, to be defeated as if you're nothing. The easiest boss.

Wanna know how this could be sadder? Notice how, in the end, he's wrapped up in his cape like how sad/upset people (or reclusive shut-ins, which also makes sense considering he's sitting alone in a room, and it's not like they're mutually exclusive anyway) would usually be seen wrapped up in a blanket or something similar. Also note that his cape was made by his mother, and that he seemed particularly distraught when she gave up on him.

@@gustavowadaslopes2479 But his followers were doing just that. They constantly praised him and were ready to follow him anywhere.
In his Showdown ending, we also see that he's bored and lonely as the ruler of Pridemoor - constantly throwing galas that nobody attends. As king, he desperately wants people to like and validate him, but after betraying everyone nobody wants to go anywhere near him.

  • @jtd786
    @jtd786 4 ปีที่แล้ว +238

I think the reason King Knight became the easiest boss (and was slacking off on the rennovations to Pridemoor Keep) is because he fell into depression.
He traded everything he wanted (friends, allies, and companions who love, respect, and follow him) for what he thought he wanted (the empty, meaningless title of King).
You can see from the other campaigns and Showdown that everybody despises him after his betrayal. The other members of the Order can't stand him, nobody attends his galas, his Goldarmor minions dream of overthrowing him, and even his own mother turned her back on him.
It didn't really hit him what he lost until his mother left him, and everything he gained was superficial. Just like Shovel Knight said, he's not even a real king. He doesn't have any real power, influence, or even friends.
So all he can do now is sit there, alone in his gilded cage, trying to convince himself that he's happy with the way things turned out, stubbornly clinging to his pride because it's all he has left. And then Shovel Knight shows up and takes it all away before his boss theme has a chance to loop.
tldr: King Knight is a terrible person who got what he deserved, can he have a redemption arc in shovel knight dig please

King Pridemoor's line "you wouldn't leave us to hang here, _would you?"_ is later echoed by King Knight himself after Shovel Knight defeats the Order of No Quarter in Shovel of Hope. Given that, according to Plague of Shadows, Shovel Knight does leave them to hang, that's a nice bit of poetic justice there.

I swear, the whiplash from lighthearted adventure in the beginning to full-on Shakespeare tragedy is what really gets me in this ending. It also solidified the growing fondness I had for King Knight's development. He really does feel like a character out of a Shakespeare play; a prideful man who threw all he had away to chase what he thought was rightfully his, isolating himself from those he once called companions, and realizing too late what he got was not all it seemed to be, especially when he lost it all and ends up back at rock bottom when Shovel Knight takes him down.

A truly sad tale. A self-centered narccistist betrays the trust of numerous people who genuinely loved and adored him, including his own loving mom, in the pursuit of a title he never truly understood, just so he can lie with his rats, never understanding what he lost until it was too late, ruining lives in his mistake, and have it all come crashing down from a shovel, til he's scrubbing the floors for somebody who actually was a king.

Very true, its a great story and addition to the lore. However, what I liked as well as King Knight not being your typical selfless protagonist were the hints of complexity to his character. He came from a poor background, hence his thirst for power, and clearly still has a few other things (though not as greatly) that he values, mainly his Mom. The Enchantress honestly was right in what she said about his "friends" who were honestly just in it to use him, and he does consider saving them until Pridemoor mentions his Mom (which is just hilarious). He even shows a hint of remorse and self-reflection towards the end when he cries out to his Mom after she leaves, and refusing Pridemoor his room. Sure he's a narcissistic asshole, but I like to think there's slightly more to the character than that.

The sad irony of King Knight's story is that throughout his quest, he amassed everything he needed to be a true king; supportive friends, enthusiastic mentors, the adolation of his peers - everything that makes you a real king. But when it mattered, he showed just how little he understood that title he coveted, and lost everything and everyone as a result. He ends up a vapid figurehead for all but five minutes, and everyone hates him, including his once-supportive mother. What a beautifully tragic character.

Notice how the Troupple Pond description is "Submerged Into Hiding"? We see the Hooded Figure (later we learn its the Enchantress) talking to a bunch of Acolytes. And later we see an Axolongl making an L or square shape. That is a very clever tie to the description. The Enchantress is looking for the Troupple King (presumably to kill him, since hes technically the only king left) but the Acolytes are lying to her that hes not there.
And the Axolongl is trying to get in a shape which to hide the King. Its things like this that makes this game a masterpiece.

But, This ending here shows just how "irredeemable" King Knight is as a character. Backstabs everyone (even his own mom!) in the end and gets hoisted by his own petard once he gets exactly what he wants.
At least with Plague Knight he was just a "Big name, small ego" kinda guy who just wanted to be loved. Ends up getting with the girl he likes, gets the villagers approval do to him using the "Ultimate Potion" to destroy the Enchantress's tower. Hell, He even seems to make friends with a couple of the knights showing he can be social.

Incoming King Knight defence rant that I made earlier:
True, but what I liked as well as King Knight not being your typical selfless protagonist were the hints of complexity to his character. He came from a poor background, hence his thirst for power, and clearly still has a few other things (though not as greatly) that he values, mainly his Mom. The Enchantress honestly was right in what she said about his "friends" who were honestly just in it to use him, and he does consider saving them (showing how the journey has developed his moral compass) until Pridemoor mentions his Mom (which is just hilarious). He even shows a hint of remorse and self-reflection towards the end when he cries out to his Mom after she leaves, and refusing Pridemoor his room. Sure he's a narcissistic asshole, but I like to think there's slightly more to the character than that.

Plague of Shadows is an alternate take on the main adventure from Plague Knight's perspective. Since Plague Knight is a bit of an unscrupulous character, his version isn't to be believed instantly. There are lots of other little things that don't line up between the two campaigns as well, such as the boss rush, Shovel Knight sucker punching Plague Knight, etc. Plague Knight feels too self important to let himself look like a chump, so he's lying about it all.

    • @heyitsyaboi8419
      @heyitsyaboi8419 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

J R I don’t think Plague Knight is 100% lying, because 90% of what happens in Plague of Shadows makes canonical sense. Now, where things start to get problematic is the battle with Shovel Knight in the Explodatorium and the boss rush at the Tower of Fate. In these cases, I think Plague Knight is most definitely lying to increase his self-image, so as to not look like a chump, as you already said.
Plague Knight traveling through the various levels can be explained by assuming that Plague Knight travels through them a bit before Shovel Knight does, because in the Explodatorium and the Tower of Fate, Shovel Knight arrives at the boss battles a bit after Plague Knight does.

    • @ThatsJustLikeYourOpinionMan

@@heyitsyaboi8419 I agree with all of that. Also, Plague Knight finds the relics on each level first, and exchanges them with Chester for Shovel Knight to get later. IMO one of the most tragic things about this ending and King Knight's fall that I don't hear a lot of people talk about is that it's really easy to interpret his betrayal as stemming from the fact that, of all people, it was the _King of Pridemoor_ who tried to appeal to him at the pivotal moment. The guy who had been schmoozing up his mom for the entire story, completely ignorant to King Knight's incredibly obvious and, in my opinion, _valid_ discomfort. The fact that, for all his grand, egotistical posturing, it's very believable that what ultimately sealed the deal for King Knight to betray everybody in the end was his _one truly valid and genuine grievance and emotional vulnerability_ being prodded at the _worst possible moment_ by the _worst possible person._
If it had been ANYONE else. If the King of Pridemoor had even just _not brought King Knight's mom into it_ and brought all that simmering resentment that was already threatening to boil over to the forefront, maybe things would have gone differently.

I feel like this is probably the hardest final boss of the four too.
Unlike the Remnant of Fate, for example, you can’t really combo the Grand Triumvirate (which is the name for the KoC final boss according to Challenge Mode) very well, especially not in Phase 1.
This fight also makes use of bottomless pits VERY extensively. The Corrupted Essence didn’t use them at all, while the Remnant of Fate and Nightmare Reize used them but they were far from the largest threat. In contrast, this boss is constantly destroying the ground you stand on with almost every attack and generally making your life difficult.
To say nothing of Phase 2, where falling off the hands means instant death if you can’t land your jumps. I made the incredibly unwise choice of ditching the Rodent Regalia, which saved me numerous times throughout the campaign, for the cosmetic armor for the finale.
It was a horrid mistake and I fell into the void numerous times on Phase 2 as a result. The Grand Triumvirate alone took me half an hour, the longest of all the individual final bosses. That’s not even counting my several deaths to the Enchantress, who is almost consistently one of the hardest bosses regardless of what campaign you’re fighting her in.

I never really saw king knight as truly evil, just a kid at heart who grew up never royal, or even with much money, and his one dream was to be a king. Which makes this ending so much sadder seeing him get manipulated to betray everyone who believed in him. I just hope he can be redeemed one day. After he is done cleaning the whole castle

    • @morganjary

Yes thats what he is most mad about. He had his mom and wanted to show her how great he could be for her, and yet here comes this man, his mom rapidly falling in love with hom and he cant do anything. He is not her only boy anymore, he has to share. So when the King tells him «what would your mother think?», King Knight snaps realizing that his fears are basically a reality.

From Plague of Shadows, we learn that Plague Knight is an insecure guy in love.
From Specter of Torment, we learn that Specter Knight was a human turned into a grim reaper, forced to join the Order of No Quarter.
From Shovel of Hope, we learn that Shovel Knight was a guy living in solitude having to go on a quest to save his love/partner.
And from King of Cards, we learn that King Knight is an idiot through and through.

KK: *speech trying to be cool about being a king*
Other king: I give thanks to your mother to raise this beutiful chi-
KK: I'am trying to help you and you keep flirting with my mother! I almost want to leave you hanging out!
    Mother: ...
    KK: *almost*

Jeez. Just finished it myself and my god I need to talk about it.
Deep down I expected this to happen. I really did. But part of me wanted to believe it could be different or maybe we didn't see the full story.
But now? All those friends he made. All those smiling faces cheering him on. Heck, a father figure in King Pridemor meaning one day he might've INHERITED the throne... he just tossed them away.
With the other villain characters you can see good in their actions. Plague Knight gave up his potion to destroy the tower and be with Mona. Saving the kingdom in the process. And while Specter Knight kept fighting for The Enchantres, he sacrificed himself and his humanity to save and protect Raize.
But King Knight? He HAD everything he could want and just... tossed it. And that final scene. When his mother can't bare to call him son anymore. That's the last we see of her in ANY campaign. It's genuinely heartbreaking.
Greed is an ugly thing. But for him to not show an inch of remorse? Not even just a little bit? Damm...

If you think about it, every member of the Order of No Quarter represents one of the seven deadly sins very well, and although King Knight lives in a castle called "Pridemoor", this ending and his progression throughout the franchise make it clear that his real sin is SLOTH.
Let's look at his progression in chronological order. In King of Cards, the canonically first game on the timeline, he is the playable character. Easily the most powerful he has ever been in the series and easily trounces his way through everyone he meets and even bests Specter Knight who was shown to be QUITE strong in Specter of Torment.
Speaking of, in Specter of Torment he is no longer playable, and he seems quite a bit less powerful, much closer to how he was in the original Shovel of Hope, where he becomes a boss so pathetic that he is literally one of the first you encounter.
Over time, after exerting himself in King of Cards, he let himself become more lax, preferring more and more to leave the dirty work up to minions and subjects. If he had retained his power and drive from KoC, Shovel Knight likely would have been no match for him, or at least would have found himself in a much more difficult situation than he ended up doing in Shovel of Hope. Sloth was ultimately his undoing.

  • @LordEnemil

I honestly can't blame King Knight for turning on them, after all, Pridemoor and the rest of the crew didn't do anything to help King Knight defeat the enchantress, cowering under her throne like cowards and perhaps giving a hollow encouragement instead of trying to engage in actual battle and attack the evil sorceress alongside their former ally when it was the time to defeat the enchantress, leaving King Knight as Cannon fodder, with the worst offender being Pridemoor, as not only he proved his cowardice before by hiding during the "king birder" battle despite claiming himself to be a brave strong leader, but constantly disregarded King Knight's feelings of being disgusted with him dating his mom.
The only one of King Knight's I can feel any sympathy at the end is the mom, after all, I can understand her dissapointment for her son's poor life choices of him joining the order of an iredeemable monster.

He payed for his dreams with hardwork, so he want to everyone do the same, and you too. I like him, and his loyal rats.

Note how only Pridemoor Keep, the Clockwork Tower and the Lost City (and maybe the Stranded Ship?) are lit up in the background. Whether this means Specter Knight already beat Tinker Knight and Mole Knight before King Knight (which does happen before the Pridemoor Keep part of this epilogue, given it's not gold-plated yet in Specter of Torment), or that King of Cards' credits sequence doesn't all happen immediately after the ending, I'm not sure.
