Stick Welding A Simple But Sturdy Workbench
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 มิ.ย. 2019
- A square particle board and two saw horses don't make a great workbench, I know! I really needed to make myself a proper sturdy one, so in this video you can see how I went about it. The design is super simple but the 50mm square tubing I bought with 3mm thick walls makes this construction pretty solid! As you can see from my ugly welds I am no expert about stick welding or any other welding and the super cheap welder I have probably don't help either (fun fact, don't trust the rod rating on a 40€ machine, it can't weld with 2.5 rods! Too bad I discovered after buyng 200). Anyway, with 2mm rods I was able to get a deep and solid weld! At the end this workbench is pretty heavy and can stand me(90kg) walking on top of it without flexing. It's also a bit high at 1m compared to most workbench I see around, that's just my preference, I like to stand straight. And I almost fogot: the workbench measure 185x80cm.
I think that's all I need to say! Feel free to ask me more information in the comments.
Index of operation and materials:
0:17 Test cut to see if the cut angle is set to 45°
1:10 Beveling edges that receive weld to help with penetration
1:44 Tack welding everything in place, it should help to avoid distortion cause by too much heat from a thick weld
2:30 After all sides are tacked I go over everything with full weld
3:13 Grinding flat to weld legs on top
3:40 Cutting legs
4:10 Welding legs with the help of square magnets and tack welds
4:40 Also checking for squareness before full welds
4:45 Closing corners and rounding with grinder
5:30 Cutting angle bar for the middle shelf
5:42 Two cut offs made for perfect spacers at 40cm from the top
6:04 Cutting feet material from scrap steel
6:33 Rounding corners and edges on the 2x72 belt grinder
6:57 Wire wheel removes rust like nothing else
7:10 Tack welding the feet, no need for full welds here, I think there won't be any stress to this joint
8:11 Cold blueing the frame (I degreased off camera). Turned out to be more of an antiquing than blue but I'm cool with that!
8:23 Spray clear coat all over the frame
9:08 Cutting to size a 2cm thick particle board as base for the top laminated board
9:45 Drilling holes in the frame and tapping for M5 bolts. I used 16 bolts to play it safe
10:20 Screweing the top laminated 2cm thick particle board from the bottom so no fasteners are left visible on the top
10:30 Bottom shelf made of a single 2cm thick particle board, cut to size and corners notched off camera
10:40 Again, I weight 90kg, super happy with how solid it came out!
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

Black! This video I see in 360p... It's normal?
@@aadimno4797 I watched at 720p60 and can go up to 2160p60 So it had to do with your settings

Black Beard Projects The machine you used for cutting the steel, what’s it called?
I've been doing a lot of small welding projects lately with a weak little inverter. It's pretty amazing how smooth everything goes once you get the settings all dialed in nice but there's a lot of variables to consider. I hope the new table works well for you and lasts you a long time
may i ask what kind of projects have you done ? some names or images if possible
Great build with no silly background music. Perfect!
For better welds, and for the stick to arch better, i would recommend grinding the mill scale off the tube at your joints, prior to starting welding
Definitely look into getting an auto-darkening helmet, will help with getting your tacks in the right place and ruler straight lines as you free up a hand to use as a guid/support. Love your work!!!!
Could not agree more with this comment. I just started and was wondering why I was so bad… I spent a bit of money on a new helmet and the difference it makes to my welds is insane, they actually look half decent!
I literally finished making stick welded workbench like week ago. Shame I haven't made it later, I would definitely used some of your processes.
Simply and nicely done!! I think anyone with his friend welding machine and some power tools can do it!!! Wanna see more simple ideas from you!!
Great project! Simple yet super sturdy and useful. Thanks for sharing!
Very well executed, including your notes. I hope you enjoy using that bench.

Oh NOW I get it. You're building a catwalk. Nice.
Very interesting process on welding a workbench Sir. Also thanks for the knowledge.
When i started weldong a few decades ago i started the tacks by holding the rod. I soon figured out flooding the weld with a couple of very bright lights. If you cannot see you cannot weld
When you start a shop. Buy lots of 1 in by 1/8 wall square tubing. Then make your stands, shelving, tables out of the stuff. A stick welder is like a really strong hot glue gun.
Yeah, both will burn you if you pick it up too soon... :)
MAN!!! That is fun!!! That is exactly what I wanna do in life, no doubt!!!
This will be one of my first welding projects For sure 🔥
You are so meticulous it gives me the warm n' fuzzies. It's like therapy for me, watching you work
Absolutely awesome! I'm looking to build one, and you just gave me the blueprints I needed.
Very nice! I would make one of this next year! Good luck! Thank you!
I’m glad u used the magnets, they are quite helpful...
Great job.I like the way you handle the welding rod
Great video and awesome simple build, thanks!
Very nice workbench. I like the look. That is something I'd like to make someday with my powerarc welder.
Coooooool... can't wait to see it used for your next project.
Great - Congratulations! - Best regards from Brazil!
Nice looking table, well built. I have a fab shop and have made quite a few tables like yours. My only criticism is on the shelf below, should have inset it a few inches to keep your shins from bashing it when working up close, good to see a guy on utube that knows how to work the tools
Greetings from "harsh" Russia, in particular from Chechnya. Every night I watch you, they wash away a hard day and calm my nerves, I love to fall asleep to your videos. I'd love to see you make Japanese katana!
You live in chlamydia?
gracias por compartir, que interesante tu técnica de soldar coges el electrodo con la mano después de la tenaza cuando esta corto el electrodo...
Lovely. Nicely made!
Great job. I have the same with 4cm oak on top. Undestroyable
Nice little shop you got. Wish I had a setup like that.
Great job looks awesome! 👍 👍
What a good idea you gave me. Good job you did, I congratulate you. Nice joob.
Tihis is really cool, man! Hello from Russia.
"grinder and plant make me the welder I ain't"
I love stick welding even though I'm not very good at it, cheap inverter is the way to go IMHO, then find some electrodes you like.
Grinder and plant make me the welder I ant lol
Thick wall tubing is where stick really shines. Nice and robust design there.
Thank you sir
Enjoyed that Project
Very nice! 😊🤘🏽
Thank you Habu!
Please someone give this man a welding machine! Seriously, GREAT JOB as ever!
Stefano maybe we can chip in and pay for him to take a course in welding?
@@melgross -- And get rid of that stupid gender-challenged "man bun"...
@@seanseoltoir heh.
Glad I’m not the only one who has trouble starting a stick electrode.
If you first start it up on a piece of waste steel the rod it warmed up and starting is much easier on workpiece
Looks like it's just the two of you so
Thank for your video. I'm practising DIY but there aren't some machines like yours in my hometown (VietNam). Anyway, thank you so much.
Te ah quedado linda la mesa maestro....felicidades un abrazo a la distancia y bendiciones.
Great work table!!!
*Que buen trabajo y prolijo, saludos desde Argentina.*
Parabéns pelo trabalho amigo 👍👏👏 like
Nice to see someone 'avin a go.
Nice job man! Hope to see you at the next makerfaire 😎👍🤙
I am disappointed, I was expecting a double backflip to get out from the table ;)
Nice job !
you're indirectly suggesting suicide
Never ever seen someone use stick welding like this...great idea thank you
There's probably a reason for that... Maybe because a professional welder would not do it that way?
@@seanseoltoir yes you are right but this is interesting
Nice work, i build another one exactly as yours. if u want an advice y put a stainless steal 1mm plat about quarter of table in one corner. it is so usefull for some works.
Solid as a rock! Nice job bro :)
Thanks Matt!
Awesome workbench. I would definitely trim out the edges on the top thought with maple or some other hardwood. That will chip out in no time.
Awesome! 😃
Hi good basic bench....
On my build I made the top lift away so I could set up mine as a welding table at will ...fix some bars to clamp my work down and such....
For them that also weld but not on floor....
Nice table! Nice video! Thanks 🙏
Timing is perfect as I just took my first welding class last week flux core and mig. Every man should learn to weld. Cool table BB thanks for sharing.
tried welding wire to fix some earphones. failed hard cuz i suck really bad or maybe the equipment doesnt work properlly anymore as its really old.
@Undefined Lastname which means i suck even more XD
bravo! simple and convenient...
Super job! I need one like that!
so great. cool workshop!
Thanks mate!!!
Soon as I get done with fixing up that fence I've got in shop class I'll probably make on of my own
Did a lot of welding work in high school, never seen or heard of anyone holding the electrode to help strike an arc. Seems so simple now that I have seen it.
And it’s a great way to burn the shit out of your fingers if you’re doing a weld of much length! The rod heats up FAST!
Muy bien trabajo, gracias por compartir, quiero hacer algo asi
Nice tacking technique !
Excellent job
Every time you have a good news. Thanks
Like your work!!!💪💪💪💪💪
Me gustan tus videos bro es una genialidad saludos desde argentina
You really should look into a proper welding hood. You can get a passive hood for really cheap that you can wear on your head and flip down so you keep both hands free while welding. It can make a huge difference. An auto-darkening helmet can usually also be had for a few more dollars and improves things even more, because you can see what you’re doing when you’re tacking especially.
Nice work👍🙂🤝🤝🤝
very beautiful and wonderful
saudações do Brasil a todos. isso q é produto de qualidade. aqui se eu subir encima da mesa ela ``explode´´!!! muito bom. sucesso.
Respect your welders.
Well done!
Very good job bro 👍👍👍👍
Nice job!!
Chow de bola o serviço, essa máquina de cortar o ferro muito boa , qual valor de uma dessa
Nice simple bueatiful table for good simple serenity work worthy
The real sturdiness test is known as the "Wandel leap" though.
Nice welding pencil!
i love ur style man
very simple and cool
nice work.
Please , share with us the info on that cool green bandsaw ... what brand is it ?
good band saw you got there.
"Hi, I'm Black Beard and I like to make stuff".
That would make for a nice and original intro to my videos... Right?
"GAHHH HA tis me Black B'ard REEEHEE, to saileth the sev'n seas is life for me. *OF COURSE, LET MY SON BUILD HIS MIGHTY workbench"!*
Hi, I'm red beard and I like to build stuff too, I like the desk.
Good skills, Thanks!
I like so much this type of portable band saw, what brand is?
calling this sturdy is a gigantic understatement
Maybe sturdy in compression, but because of not angled supports, it might still "rack" is pushed sideways...
awesome very nice and really a good job
So nice 👍
I got a good idea . I try do it . thank's sir..
Very nice !
Friday afternoon, cold beer and some BB, great start to the weekend.
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers
Nice beard..... I thought I was the only one that still uses a thirty year old Bosch circular saw. Hey, if it aint broke, don't fix it.
Te quedó chingona !!! De diez
Absolutely beautiful and you've inspired me to buy a stick welder
Bro, I like every video of yours, but you need more welding practice. Also try avoiding things like on 3:27, becouse if you are using inverter welder, ONE spark on board inside can kill your machine. Stay cool and keep it going! :)
Excellent, very good ✋💐🇮🇶😘
would you reccomend this as a beginner wielder project
Pretty sure his, "welding machine" is just a car battery in a box.
I can hear how shit that welder is
Thanks for sharing that
That's a very nice and useful band saw. What brand or make is it?
Very good!
Sempre belli i tuoi video. E lo sappiamo che sei italiano! 😀 Ottimo lavoro! Quali sono le dimensioni dei tubolari?
